    I found that the Zetagi B550 I had to repair over 5 years ago also kept blowing the internal fuses. I could get about 240W PEP out of it on 10m SSB, with about 10W PEP SSB in. Your mileage may vary. ;)

    Nice video .
    I use the rm503 with a imax 2000 for hilltop work and have never had any problems with mine but I have mounted 4 12v pc fans to the top of the amp.Also I rarely use more than 200w on fm cos the dx stations are hearing me but I ain't hearing them if I use more.

    Hi Collin I'm actually thinking of buying the same amplifier like yours but with the preamp built in I'm only going to be using it for the SSB on 27.555 and if the mid band EU is open then I'll use it on 27.315 channel 31 it's some kind of calling frequency as far as I know I'm not sure but anyway you can get some really good DX on the FM as well and if I had one of those amplifiers as well then that would be great and I'd have to be careful because I use my Yaesu FT-950 so I'd have to get a proper ATU to tune it up and keep the SWR down. Thanks and best 73's cheers. Stephen M3SNV 73's.

    RM has an updated version to the RM500 the RM500v. Which has updated parts and fans. But the heatsink is still the same. As always don't feed it more than 4 watts and it will last a whole lot longer than both those models. If you want a real winner. Get a Texas Star 500. That will last almost 20 years with continued use. I have both and Texas Star is clean AB class. While the RM500v is C class and bleeds into everything.

    Very good review my friend. You have right. I have run many amplifiers, and only American Amps, and from Italy, only the Zetagi has reliable, wellworking, and good constructed Tranzistor Amplifiers. All the models of Zetagi's12v/24v amplifiers have the same quality, perfomance and good structure. Of course, Zetagi has a little less power (db)performance (Input W > Output W) in all amplifiers than the RM.....but who cares about a few less watts, instead of Rm's high temperatures, loads, burnings, and break downs!!! Even in tube Amplifiers, e.g. BV-2001 has 4 (519) tubes ( 1 driver - 3 Amp = 600W peak AM/FM and 1200 pep SSB at 10 / 20 Watts input Power) ...and... RM KLV-1000p has 5 (519) tubes with 700Wpeak / 1400W pep .....but with many RF Relay, driving Relay, RX preamp circuit issues/problems. I agree that Zetagi in some models has more simple constructed amplifiers without many features,.e.g BV-2001 it hasn't RX (adj) Preamp, SWR Meter, Filter in all anodes, and in especially in BV-2001 it has so wrong parts placement construction in the box, that you need to make parts all the amplifier, to replace e.g a resistor on the main board.!! But, on the other hand, you never need to do that because Zetagi BV-2001, never braekdown in normal use.!

    how many watts makes the kl500 in ssb really?

  • @billybassman21

    I agree with others. Amps like the Texas Star blow these mosfet's out of the water. I had a Midnight Special 200 which is made my Xforce (good amps on the bigger ones). The are made similar to these. I then upgraded to a Texas Star DX 350 which has two 2879's. Even though it's only a little over 100 watts more, the difference was amazing. People that couldn't hear me before were hearing me loud and clear. I overall was getting noticed a lot more and getting over people that used to walk all over me.

    Loved the comment on the guy in the shop. "I've Colin Proofed it!".
    Personally, be it ham radio or CB I reckon nobody needs more than 100w. If the skip isn't happening then your shouting DX to nobody and wasting your lekky bill.
    Improve on the antenna - it's ALL about the antenna. Then worry about the power later.
    Personally, if I were you I'd have rather made up an 11m Moxon beam (which wouldn't be that big) or bought yourself a 3 element Sirio beam for 11m/10m band.

      +M6GOF I was talking to a chap in Finland a couple of days ago, he was using 400w and giving me an S9, he asked me to tell him at what point I lose him as he turned his power down. He got to his lowest of 5 w and I could still hear him perfectly albeit only an S2 -3 but all good.....Cant understand all this madness CB'ers seem to have about power when you can work the world on 10w if the conditions are right.......73

    • @matrixoreilly
      @matrixoreilly 8 лет назад

      +gripper021164 because we need power to get out over the next guy on channel 19. CB is all about survival of the most powerful. Weak stations are like dog shit, they get trodden on.

    • @gripper021164

      Matrix O'Reilly
      Well I live in the countryside and do not suffer with adjacent channel interference (thank God), also use a yaesu ft 950 which arnt very good on rejection on 11 metres or any band, you think your CB radio gets adjacent channel crap you should try a Yaesu/Kenwood/Icom etc, as for power, come to think but I will only use minimum watts (5w) mine goes down to and will gradually increase if I am a crap signal to copied station, I have never run it at its full power - Have copied whole of europe on 5 - 10 watt......Much more of a challenge therefore more fun, a bit like fishing in a dodgy river/pool....Radio isnt meant to be about who is the stronger signal, if everyone used equal power and made it fair then the world as we know it would be a better place for us 11 metre users....

    • @matrixoreilly
      @matrixoreilly 8 лет назад

      Stop confusing 11m with the U.K. CB band... When we talk about using power to get out on channel 19, I'm talking about FM 27.78125 where everybody else is using power, so of course if your going to compete you need to be apart of it. Don't comment on what you don't understand, I'm not talking about a single side band or AM mode where you can sit and try to get out using a few watt in propagation, I'm talking about 20 local stations all one channel all talking at the same time and music playing mic keying etc and if you want to stand a chance of getting out, you need to whack some big watts on, it's a simple as that, it's a fact too so don't come back with a stupid argument telling me I'm wrong, get yourself on the CB channel 19 fm round here and try to get out over the rest of the lads running power, no one will hear you, you WONT get out. That's why CBers buy these amps

Put a computer fan on your RM let it blow cool air over the resistors and transistors . My 5 cents as an old fart radio head . used to build my own stuff all the times . cheers mate

      Sort it out colin the head . a B 300 p Will take 10 watts on the first 5 Stages and 5 in on stage six . . the Rm is not a home base amp the same for the 550 p or the 300 p these are not designed to be used in hot conditions and would work much better if the local Bungalows did not over Drive them for 40 minuets on end at full duty cycle they are cheap shit indoors you should be using base station amps . these chunks of shit you spend all your money on you could have saved the money that them 3 amps cost you then put some more to it and gone and Brought a ACOM 1000 HF Home Base Amp . These bad boys peak up 1480 SSB AND OVER A K FM Clean output No messing no hassle domination signal that is clean too So leave the Mobil Amps where they should be in the car . .

    I only like RM when there's a steal on something I'll modify, yuppers, learned the hard way, fried one putting in 4.5 watts no fan, and I believe partial contact on a transistor w/arctic silver incomplete spotch... treated an identical one totally differently, with a wee heat sink and fan and it doesn't owe anybody anything (oh I do only drive it w/3 watts too)

  • @MrBugsier5

    heat is not really an issue, the cheap and weak parts are, iff you rebuild the zetagy or the rm, it will do 400 watts easy, whit the pills wich are in now., would be getting pritty hot, but they will work, an stay together fine, no magic smoke, increase power wires, fuses, and resistors, couplers need better caps also.(and mount a car battery parralel whit the power supply.)(less voltage drop, moore wats, cooler pills....)

      Actually the only thing more important than a low swr is a resonant antenna, but the two usually go hand in hand, a resonant antenna will almost most certainly have a low swr, but a low swr doesn't always mean you are resonant !

    I had a Zetagi B153 and it lasted about a week. Got a refund from the seller after him eventually admitting it was faulty. Been running an RM KL203 for nearly 2 years now and it's been spot on, no issues. 5W in on FM, 10-12W in on SSB.
    Several locals run 203's as well and highly rate them. I do agree however the bigger RM amps are pretty poor. I had a KL503 for a day and it went pop. Got a replacement from the seller the next day and it's been spot, but I only tend to run it when there's contests going or there's a station from a rare DXCC. Too scared this one will go pop too lol

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад

      Both amps you mention are MOSFET amps my friend and they are a totally different ball game. The MOSFET transistors in both rm and zetagi amps like yours are not even designed for RF, they are designed for cost effectiveness at the expense of poor RF reliability.

    • @flatoutandscreaming
      @flatoutandscreaming 9 лет назад

      Chris TheHulk
      The problem with all KL203 amps is when you use them on SSB, just watch the SWR bounce around to way over safe limits. It's only for split seconds at a time and it is kinda supposed to move a little, but we are talking 5, 8, 10...even off the scale here...and they all do it, i've never come across a KL203 that doesn't, we've even tested a couple brand new out of the box...same deal! Don't know why, no-one i know knows why (tried different mosfets like irf520, irf520n, sc1969...you name it we've tried it) and its not down to an antenna as we've whacked the dummy loads on.
      If you have an AT5555, DX5000 type radio stick it on "display swr" when you key up and watch that SWR dance around!
      Yet, something like a CTE 747 (or Midland 747 if you prefer, it's just a name) run stable as a donkey in a barn!
      For me, i dont mind waiting half an hour for valves to warm up in my old Zetagi BV135 and it has a "warmer", less harsh modulation sound too...coupled up with my beam....its like comparing a sniper rifle to a shotgun when compared to a mosfet amp on a gainmaster.

    • @ChrisTheHulk
      @ChrisTheHulk 9 лет назад

      I've never seen my KL203 make the SWR go over 1.3 on ssb

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад

      A 2sc1969 is not a MOSFET, it's a real old school transistor that is perfectly suited to rf linear application, the mosfets used in 203 and modern transceivers were not even designed for rf use and that is why they give so many problems. Slight changes in swr are enough to fry them, they don't handled voltage very well and instability is probably down to lack of a good bias circuit but they cost pennies to produce so the manufacturers love em, making inferior radio and linears just because of a bigger profit margins at the expense of totally crap unsuitable performance for the end user, us!!

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад

      There is no reason your swr should rise on Ssb just because your using a kl203. A lot of the time when people are seeing their swr fluctuating when using an amplifier, it is because of the harmonic distortion and RF that floats around as a byproduct of linear amplification. If your antenna is resonant and already has a low stable swr, and you have no antenna faults, then any fluctuation reading you get when measuring your swr with an amplifier is almost certainly a false reading. Sometimes amps can fuck up and alter the swr but my point was mainly about how intolerable the mosfets are when used in a high swr situation, even swr slightly above 2.0 is high enough to quickly destroy a MOSFET.

    Yup, them Rm Italy amps are garbage. Mine lasted me around 30 days then went bad. I took it to get fixed and went bad in 20 days.
    Was a little 30watt amp to get out a few extra miles with my cb in my 18wheels.
    I was getting out like 14 miles wich was awesome but it didn't last.

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад +1

      I hear you brother, there so easy to kill, especially the smaller ones like the 30w, uses a single MOSFET for the amplification which makes it run beyond it's limit all the time especially on a uk cb that use FM as the carrier, and when your mobile as well, your antenna and swr really has to be spot on or they will die pretty much instantly.

    • @93foxwcube
      @93foxwcube 9 лет назад +2

      Uncle Frank yes sir, i had my antenna tuned and my swr was under 1.5. But then one day the antenna mount broke and i installed a new one. Swr might have moved some and maybe that made the amp go bad. I still have the amp, just not sure if u should spend another $20-30 to get it fixed again. Seems like a money pit with no bottom.

    The difference between 180 watts and 220 watts is quite small in logarithmic or decibel terms, which is what matters in radio reception. The chances are that few people will notice the difference. I replaced a 150 watt amplifier with a 200 watt amplifier and nobody noticed although they did notice the difference between 70 watts and 150 watts and they certainly noticed and couldn't stop banging on about it when I went from 4 watts to 70! A bit lower output but with much chunkier safety margins is the way to go.
    Just think, if you tweaked a rig from 4 watts to 5 would people bang on about it for weeks? Of course not, it's small beer. To make people notice you need to at least double the power and that doesn't impress people much. At 180 watts you're going to be three times the power of somebody using a "high power" 10 metre mobile transceiver, that order of magnitude gets noticed and of course 4 watts up to 180 is *45 times as much power!* Nobody can fail to notice that difference.
    180 up to 220 isn't even half as much again, that is about the width of a traditional signal meter's needle on reception, a difference barely worth paying for, and not worth paying for in the form of constant repair bills!

      I have to agree with you, it's common sense the amps are going to last a lot longer with a low sensible drive, the issue seems to come from the manufacturers advice which rates them at 10w input,, obviously 10w will drive it lovely but it will die at that, he'll they even die with a 5w input and people think because there putting only half the rated power into them that they will be fine, clearly not the case especially on fm with the constant carrier. 2-3w will like you say still drive a good 200w and the amp will love you for it instead of trying to get 300w out of it and combusting it to death.

    • @MartinWillett

      I had a B300P and I recall it was rated at 4 watts input for all settings except the peak output, position 6. I had a Superstar 2000 with three position power output. I used a broken matchstick to stop myself accidentally giving it too much power. With the matchstick in place it couldn't give more than 4 watts and therefore I could use it on any power level. This was useful when I was running off a car battery in a tent on the top of a mountain. Full power wouldn't last all night long but we could run on position 2 or 3 for a few hours, only cranking it up to the max when it was necessary, or fun.
      The biggest linear we ever operated from near a mountain top was a twin valve 600 watt mains linear, unfortunately it wasn't a good day when we used it and we were limited in altitude to what was road accessible. Of course we had a 5/8th wave and a 3 element beam. Carrying a generator in a rucksack was a step too far.
      I know there has been at least one Ben Nevis DXpedition on UK CB (they didn't make any contacts into England). The best I did personally was Snowdon, with 150 watts off a car battery, not bad, I worked Scotland, Lincolnshire, Northern Ireland, much of Southern Ireland including a bloke on the beach near Dublin on a walkie talkie.
      Be careful with big amplifiers, they can cause problems. I bought one which I thought was less powerful than a B300, a Hurricane 350. The shop who sold it me thought the 350 referred to the maximum PEP on SSB. No, it was actually rated 350-450 watts AM, 700 - 900 watts PEP SSB. After being told I was coming over radio 5 on a transistor radio on VHF FM *fifty miles away* I bought a low pass filter for it, but only rated to 200 watts. Only after the linear stopped working did I find out it was causing a 3 to 1 SWR and therefore cooking the burner. So for quite a long time I had the biggest boots in CB and I didn't even realize it.

    you drive the rm to hard you got to look at the swing I use rm for a long time I drive with a cobra148 it swing up to about 6watt

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад +1

      You are right we do drive our amps harder in the UK, made worse by the fact that our normal mode of operation is FM, we don't have 'swing' because unlike AM with its variable swinging output, our constant fm carrier of 5-6 watts input can and does give the amp a hard time. The stickers on the back of the units claim a 10w input so most breakers think they can put 10w in safely so obviously assume that 5 or 6 input is been extremely conservative but the reality is if you want these to last a lifetime instead of a few month then 2-3w on FM or 5-6w am / Ssb is the best way. I know run my amps with lower input after decades of failed amps iv now learned my lesson :-)

    From a business prospective it makes sense for RM to make their linear amps fail after a while. Every weekend on USB555 you can hear thousands of European dx'ers in competitions, most of them Italian. The temptation to overdrive the input in order to win must be over powering and by doing so they knowingly break the recommended factory input and just go out and buy another. Meanwhile back at the RM factory, the owners are rubbing their hands together and ordering a new Ferrari. It wouldn't shock me to find that the organizers of DXing competitions own amp factories.

    These power levels are way illegal on CB in most parts of the world. Solution: get a ham radio license, and get the right to use legal power levels, on bands with far more potential for constant, satisfying DX, over a longer period of the sunspot cycle. Also avoid the deadheads and the dipsticks.

      +AusRadioHistorian rules can only be held if people agree to follow them, otherwise they're just words. People in the UK aren't policed anymore on the CB so operators run what they like. Moaning about such things is very petty when there is so much more important shit going off in the world to moan about

Also abuse your power, Gangsta means being real how real are you when your running a linear amplifier? You ain't how about you get a life and grow up. if the manufacturers think of a Linear Amplifier as a computer then they would realize that they should put a fan already inside them to keep them cool with a proper shell around them so hot air can escape out of them we all know that anything with a motherboard with power running through them will create heat blimey talk about surrounded by noobs :( & after watching this video i`m not going to buy nothing from RM until they improve there equipment.

    • @imunclefrank
      @imunclefrank  9 лет назад

      You are absolutely spot on, the manufacturer should be well aware of the lack of thermal dissipation from this unit and should have either designed it with fans or made it physically bigger with more metal. All down to cost and profit margins I guess is why they didn't, but it does kinda make them totally unfit for purpose, you buy it, use it and the reality is your just waiting for it to overheat and break.
