My son played Moritz at a real low ebb of high school, and I think I died every performance with every staged suicide. I'm glad to say he's still above ground some years later. This show rings very true. Parents seem clueless because sometimes we don't want to believe we can't keep such sorrows from you. Please walk as far as my house with me forever.

ive been falling into a spring awakening induced rabbit hole but i never knew gerard played moritz. this guy has so many layers oh my god. so much talent in such a tiny guy. my love for him just grew two sizes.

Not only is he incredibly talented, but incredibly nice!!! I met him through some familial connections and long story short-he gave us a personal backstage tour of the theatre that Spring Awakening was performing at! He was so sweet and enthusiastic, love this guy!

Best Moritz I've ever seen was from a community theatre that did the show, and this whole sequence was absolutely heartwrenching because of how well the actor portrayed Moritz's pains. And when Moritz was holding the gun behind his back as Ilse (who knew in this production that Moritz was suicidal) talked to him, he kept pulling back the trigger and almost dropping it. Then when Ilse left, it was like she almost agreed with Moritz, that he should just end it. And that was the saddest part.

Ilse understanding his motives in this scene really changed it. This rendering must’ve been breathtaking. I often watch the musical with my own thinking being that she is NONE the wiser. How gorgeous to rearrange character expectations. 🙏

oh, i love Lauren's ilse! so different from all the others. Lauren's is more positive and lively, and i think it fits the free-spirited, bohemian character very well!

gerard is AMAZING. he sings BEAUTIFULLY in every video he's in for all shows. however, john is and always will be moritz. it's his role that he won the Tony for, and I personally think nobody comes close. and lauren I dnt like that much. JOHN AND PHOEBE FTW!

@phantom4087 Gerard Canonico. He was the original understudy for John Gallagher Jr.. He became the full time Moritz in the Summer of 2008 till the show closes. He is now appearing in American Idiot on Broadway!

And for good reason, too. The original actor has no precedent to base his/her interpretation of the character. JGJ set the bar high and, while other Moritzes (how does one write that in plural lol?) are definitely talented, they'll always have had him as a reference point. That's why I always give the original actors credit, even if I personally prefer other interpretations. I mean, look at Lauren here. She has the most beautiful voice, but later actresses had much better acting IMO.

Awful sweet to be a little butterfly
Just wingin' over things, and nothin' deep inside
Nothin' goin', goin' wild in you, you know
    You're slowin' by the riverside
    Or floatin' high and blue
Or, maybe, cool to be a little summer wind
    Like, once through everything
    And then away again
With a taste of dust in your mouth all day
But no need to know, like, sadness
    You just sail away
'Cause, you know, I don't do sadness
    Not even a little bit
Just don't need it in my life
Don't want any part of it
    I don't do sadness
    Hey, I've done my time
Lookin' back on it all, man it blows my mind
    I don't do sadness
    So been there
    Don't do sadness
    Just don't care
    Moritz Stiefel?
    Ilse? You frightened me
    What are you looking for?
    If only I knew
Then what's the use of looking?
    I'm on the way home
    Want to come?
    I don't know
    God
You remember how we used to run back to my house and play pirates?
Wendla Bergman, Melchior Gabor, you, and I?
    Spring and summer
    Every other day
    Blue wind gets so sad
    Blowin' through thick corn
    Through the bales of hay
Through the open books on the grass
    Spring and summer
    Sure, when it's autumn
    Wind always wants to
    Creep up and haunt you
    Whistling, it's got you
With its heartache, with its sorrow
Winter wind sings, and it cries
    Spring and summer
    Every other day
    Blue wind gets so pained
    Blowin' through the thick corn
    And the bales of hay
Through the sudden drift of the rain
    Spring and summer
    Actually, I'd better go
Walk as far as my house with me
    I wish I could
    Then why don't you?
80 lines of Virgil, 16 equations, a paper on the Hopsborks
So maybe I should be some kinda laundry line
Hang their things on me, and I will swing 'em dry
You just wave in the sun through the afternoon
And then, see, they come to set you free
    Beneath the rising moon
'Cause, you know, spring and summer, I don't do sadness
    Every other day
    Not even a little bit
    Blue wind gets so lost
Just don't need it in my life, blowin' through the thick corn
And the bales of hay, don't want any part of it
Spring and summer, I don't do sadness
    Every other day
    Hey, I've done my time
    Blue wind gets so lost
    Lookin' back on it all
    Man it blows my mind
    Blowin' through the thick corn
    And the bales of hay
    I don't do sadness
Through the wondering clouds of dust
    So been there
    Don't do sadness
    Spring and summer
    Just don't care

Fantastic energy from Moritz off the top, but why do they block this scene so un-creatively? Ilse and Moritz don’t even look at each other and there’s absolutely no movement. Why does Ilse read it so monotone-ly? I can respect simple blocking but this seems too much. It must be purposeful?

I disagree. I don't think John develops the character all that well. He seems like he performs, not like he's suicidal. When he pulls out the gun, it's somewhat out of nowhere. That being said, I don't have a stand alone favorite.
