I sincerely hope that there weren't any people watching this like, "This is such a fun, cute musical about life! Let's take my kid to see it!" And then were promptly horrified.
Yes. Despite all the theatrical euphoria at the time, many people were horrified by it. It has no real story line, no resolution: just a bunch of kids jumping up and down and singing songs about sex and protesting about parents, teachers and even singing about suicide. Nudity and harsh language prevail. The lead is gay Jonathon Groff, whose claim to fame is he went right from high school into theater, eventually landing the lead in SPRING AWAKENING while highly trained artists struggle to get jobs in theater. How does this happen? Legitimate magazine critics were less than enthused about a relatively untrained juvenile landing such a lead. His television work was not received much better, claiming that as a supposed macho lover he came across as merely gay. And awards have become a joke. In an industry where they are now passed out like candy, they have become mere technicalities.
These people clearly had not seen the musical. They are like this happy musical about springtime is a great way to welcome the new season la la la flowers and birds. Then they go see the musical and are horrified. I like to think there was a writer that suggested it and was just dying laughing in the back somewhere.
@@kamwrites Yes, their point is that the people announcing the show clearly don’t understand that it’s a metaphor, they think the show is LITERALLY about spring
My parents took me b/c we didn't know what it was about. The person selling tickets just said "it has sign language and it's really good" so we bought tickets and it was SO AWKWARD OH MY GOD :(
aight couple things: 1) I know this was a long time ago but imma complain anyway 2) the producers clearly either didn't know the heavy themes throughout the show and that's it's not happy, spring flowers, what-a-great-way-to-kick-off-spring, or they did know and told them to lighten it up and only do some rock choruses 3) I can see why b/c people don't wanna be depressed 1st thing in the morning, but hey, it's a depressing show 4) The changing of the words was the worst thing in the world 5) Groff's lil SMIRK after he says "stuck" is amazing
when I first started watching this I thought "wait why aren't they signing??" even though I haven't seen the revival it's weird for me to not think of the show in sign language now because it makes so much sense for it to be in asl
I just can't get over GROFFSAUCE CUTENESS!!!! Oh yeah of course the musical is great, for those who still haven't watch it (or read the book) please do. It has many life lessons, especially for teenagers👍👍👍👍👍
I love how when they sing "Totally [Stuck], some of the ensemble members are even more intense than the cast who actually appears onstage during the show... if that makes sense :P
me too! I always get these chills during the "blah blah" part of Totally (well in this case) stuck. haha I love the face that jonathan has after he says "there's a moment you know you're stuck"

She was Ilse when the show closed, even, yes, though she wasn't the original. This was not long after she was cast, if I recall. Her name is Emma Hunton.
I remember people taking their kids to see Cabaret in the theater "because it had Judy Garland's daughter in it and it was a musical" with no idea how dark and adult were its themes. Spring Awakening was written in the late 1800s with themes that ring through the decades but it isn't for anyone not open to listen to what it was saying about the generation gap and how children view their parents not giving them the information they need to make good decisions. I consider this one of the best theater experiences of the decade, even if the songs are such that you don't leave the theater humming the tunes like we could do in the 50's. The cast was wonderful, so many went on to have amazing careers on stage, screen, and TV. If you dont like the subject matter don't go. It's as simple as that. One more seat available for someone who needs to see it and learn from it.
Yeah it's Jenna Ushkowitz who plays Tina of course. It's pretty cool they did this together and now they're on Glee together. This is an awesome performance besides the "You're "Stuck"" lol
WHOA. I was watching Glee (Prom Queen)....well, not really watching, it was on in the background, and I re-watched this...and when Jon started singing, he also had a scene on the TV. Groffception.

Wow, they really had me fooled when singing I believe. I thought they were actually so good that they could fade out their voices so much like a track being faded out. (Sarcasm lol) Btw no shade to the cast I love them
I saw the original cast of Spring Awakening on Broadway. I had NO idea that Jenna from Glee was part of that cast until I saw this video? My mind is blown.
The hatred in his face when he says "stuck" gives me life
Yesssss
GAHAHAHAHAHAAHA
Groff's smirk when he says ".....you're stuck"
He knows how wrong it sounds.
XD
the pain
Kiss your sorry life goodbye
He’s so sexy.
Spring Awakening: School Edition
GROFFSAUCE'S FACE AT THE BEGINNING WHEN HE SAID "YOURE STUCK" HE WAS TOTALLY THINKING WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WAS-- wtf even is the censor on here
No kidding... it just hurts.
At least it isn't like it was in Rise...."There's a moment you know....you're messed up....You can kiss your sorry butt goodbye"

NaTavia Carter I kinda half hope that this actually happened

My friend's parents took their six year old to see Book of Mormon. That led to some interesting conversations.
one of my friends actually did this. she took her 10 yesr old to see the show and had to answer a lot of questions after
You can tell by the picture it’s not family lol it’s literally John laying on Lea😅

she understudied for a few roles!
How that news lady sang "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" tho
George Dalton I laughed but also cringed when she did that
The clean versions of these songs make me laugh so hard

I love how they included the swings
U know the obsession is unhealthy when u know the exact spot in totally "stuck" where everyone's gonna break out of line and go crazy
Omg loving that censorship 😂😂😂 oh god that was hilarious
Spring Awakening Medley: But every time they do a new number it gets faster. Oh wait...^^^
I love Jon and Lea in all the clips from Spring Awakening I've seen on youtube!
All of them were trying not to bust out laughing. It's to funny 😂😂
it's kinda cute and amusing, the different ways they've edited around the obscenities and NC-17 content in the lyrics, here and in other performances
Dearest People,
They are saying "stuck" and "life" because children watch GMA.
Dearest Jasmyn,
We know, we just believe that it sounds dumb
Jazmyn Bloomfield-Nishimura but they could of used a different song that they didn’t have to censor
One thing I love about this cast is their angst and energy! It's SO INTENSE!
I was singing along with jonathan for a first few seconds, then it was, "wait, what did he just say? stuck?" awww.
"There's a moment you know...your STUCK.." Haha you gotta love daytime tv.
i am so utterly depressed i never got to see the original cast they set such a high standard for the others...there were so amazing...: (

I'm from Chile, and I've only watched it it on youtube, shaky and poor quality :(
There is, but only available at the NY public library...

if im correct you have to have a specific reason that you need to watch it and it cant just be for entertainment
Queen Fia you can also only watch that musical once in your lifetime and there are some pretty strict rules
