    I seriously love the fact that they censored the musical about.... the dangers of not teaching children about sex. The irony is perfect.

      Ik this was a year ago but I ended up watching the show Rise and they did this musical and SPOILERS (if you watch it) a part of the plot was the principle and teachers trying to censor the show and changing the entire plot (taking out the abuse, the gay scenes, the sex, the swearing, the pregnancy, literally the entire plot) and in the end they went ‘frick you’ to the rules and did the original musical and right at the end of Totally F*****d when here’s the big f bomb they had to censor it on tv. I nearly died from the irony and just the pure silence at the end.

    Does anyone else find it ironic how censored this performance is when the entire musical is about the effects of censorship on young people? I know there's a couple hundred years difference, but the principal still applies :P They did a fantastic job considering though, love this musical so bloody much!

    • @mrtompinney
      @mrtompinney 10 лет назад +102

      You bring up a good point. But welcome to cable television. I'm surprised it wasn't censored further. Had they not censored themselves, the network would've censored them.

    • @sparklemotion1013
      @sparklemotion1013 10 лет назад +60

      Tom Pinney This was live on CBS, not cable, so you're right, FCC restrictions were in full force. Also, the musical is mostly about repression; it's not at all about censorship.

      Network TV. My bad.

    • @JonathanBontragerWaite
      @JonathanBontragerWaite 10 лет назад +64

      I think that was part of the performance. It was a bit of a statement against censorship (the way that they covered their mouths every time the lyrics contained something they couldn't say). The creative team probably thought it was stupid that their original score couldn't be performed, so they took the chance to try to condemn the concept.

    • @JonathanBontragerWaite
      @JonathanBontragerWaite 10 лет назад +20

      ***** I'm pretty sure that the repression in the musical and the censorship of modern youth are similar. Definitely not the same, but similar.

      Guess what? It was a decision made because they would have had to pay a substantial fine for swearing on TV.

    17 years ago!? Wow, it feels like just yesterday. Spring Awakening is one of those shows that leaves a lasting mark, just like Company, Les Miserables, and Rent did for me. It seems like the reverence for Spring Awakening has faded or been overshadowed by Hamilton, but it stands alongside the all-time greats and deserves that recognition.

    I hate that they censored "Bitch of Living" so much at the fucking Tony awards. The entire point of drama is to impact people. Hard to do when you soften it up for living rooms.

    You know, it's really hard to explain, actually. I think it's a beautiful musical that covers all the bases of problems you can have in high school, with hauntingly beautiful songs as well as catchy ones and incredible performances from the entire cast. But if you don't see it that way, it's hard to change your mind to make it "good" for you. That's why I think it's good though, if that helps.

    To all the people complaining about this being censored: you do realize that this was on TV, and not the actual show? Unless you want them to change the law just for the Tony's, then yeah, its gonna be censored

    Wow, id never really listened to anything in this musical but knew the name. There's something truly raw, nostalgic and melodically enchanting about it. Perhaps its just that it delivers its intended message so well, without typical commercial nature of some musicals, nothing cliché, just doing what fits. Everything on stage that they worked hard for seems so organic. Id love to see this. It also makes me mourn my unadventurous youth....
