Aoralscan 3 Intraoral Scanner Review | the latest IOS by Shining 3D - the best low-cost IOS?
Aoralscan 3 by Shining 3D is one of the most popular intraoral scanners (IOS) from China. It is a scanner I have been asked to review countless times, and I am glad to (finally) share this with you.
Aoralscan 3 was released on the 12th of September, 2021. It is another low-cost, scanner-only device but comes with much better software than most Chinese scanners we have reviewed, and in fact, better software than many mainstream scanners too.
We have been testing this scanner for months. The team at iDD was fortunate to receive one of the first Aoralscan 3 units in New Zealand and the entire Oceania region. The following review goes over our experiences and how this scanner compares to all others on the market.
-----
Shining 3D Company Background
Shining 3D is not a newcomer to dentistry like many other emerging IOS companies. The company was founded in 2004 and develops its own 3D digitizing and additive manufacturing technologies, owning over 300 patents and more than 100 copyrights. It has more than 15 years of experience in the industry, which shows in many aspects, such as its software development.
Shining 3D provides fully intergraded 3D digital dental solutions, from obtaining 3D data with 3D scanners for lab and intraoral 3D scanners for clinics to 3D printers.
In 2018, the company released its first dental DLP printer, the AccuFab-D1, and in 2019, they released their first intraoral scanner, the Aoralscan. Since 2019 the company has released two developments of their intraoral scanner, the Aoralscan 2 and Aoralscan 3.
The Aoralscan 3, released on 12th September 2021, promises fast scan speeds, high accuracy, and an intelligent AI. It is also under 11,000 USD. So how does this scanner compare to other scanners dominating the low-cost scanner space? Let's go over it all.
Disclaimer - no conflict of interest. This is an objective review of the Aoralscan 3 intraoral scanner. The team at iDD remains unwaveringly committed to providing you with impartial and trustworthy information. Shining 3D had no part in writing this review or restricting any conclusions iDD makes in our thorough analysis and clinical use of these products.

Hi, thank you for this excellent review! Want to ask how does this Aoralscan 3 compare against i600 and against i700? If i would to get a scanner within these 3 model for orthodontic, prosthesis and smile design, what would be a better choice? Thank you!
These 3 scanners are all at different price points. All are very good.
Aoralscan 3 = most economical, best Chinese scanner software, fast. Software is not as good as Medit.
i600 = second most economical, fast, basically as good as i700. A few features missing.
i700 = most expensive out of the three.
I would suggest try them all to make a decision. Also check out our reviews: instituteofdigitaldentistry.com/intraoral-scanner-ios-reviews/
@@InstituteofDigitalDentistry in term of scanner clarity, between i600 and aoralscan which would be better in terms of scanner accuracy? Thank you so much for your replied 😊
@@yan5735 Check our reviews for images of the same prep with these scanners. i600 is very similar to i700. It is more clear.
Accuracy is not clinically different between Aoralscan 3 and Medit.
@@InstituteofDigitalDentistry thank you so much for your feedback 😊
I don't think Shining 3d has smile design built into its software. You may need to use additional software to do smile design. Medit has smile design built in.
This has been the most informative video on scanners I have watched to date. I have also viewed your Medit i600 unboxing video. They both seem like they could work for me. Can I get your recommendation on which scanner I should purchase?
As an orthodontist, I am looking for a scanner that will best serve my needs which is ONLY to scan 1) for study models, 2) send STL files to a lab for a maxillary expander and 3)make printed models for fabrication of both Essix retainers and aligners.
So I am thinking it does not have to have super resolution/accuracy like a crown prep margin would need.
I really enjoyed the capabilities of the Aoralscan software in regards to Ortho treatment planning. Does Medit’s i600 have similar software? I didn’t see it in your unboxing video.
Thanks again for the great video.
Both work well Salvatore! Shining 3D Aoralscan 3 is slightly cheaper than Medit i600, but the Medit i600 has the advantage of single cable and excellent Medit software (it also does orthodontic simulation).
Thanks for the kind words!
Keep in touch - happy to help!
Shining 3D is a good option for you.
Hello, you can review Shining 3D aoralscan 3 wireless? Thank you very much!
Review coming soon!
how can unblok aoralsan3?
Can you please advice, buying the wireless version of this aoralscan or 3shape ?
Completely different price points. Both work well my friend. Shining is a great entry-level scanner. 3Shape is great for those looking for their ecosystem. They have amazing CAD and AI software.
Wireless wise, they both function just fine.
is it precise even with scaning many elements (bridge of 12 crowns)?
Yes. The most common reason for imprecise scans with intraoral scanners is operator error. This is proven in the literature. The vast majority of mainstream intraoral scans are very accurate for tooth-bourne restorations. Full arch implants are a different story.
What´s the difference between aoralscan 3 and virtuo vivo? The preps are clear on aoralscan 3? under gengival margin could we got a good result?
Vivo is a scanner that is kind of old tech now. It has been around since 2019. So, although it still works, the Aoralscan 3 is 'newer'.
Otherwise, they both scan well and are accurate to be honest. The Vivo has a higher res and sharper scan aesthetic.

comparing this and runyes, which one is better suited for a full fledged dental practice?
Both are good scanners. I just recently reviewed the Runyes here: instituteofdigitaldentistry.com/runyes/runyes-3ds-3-0-intraoral-scanner-review/
I think the main difference is the software. Both scan well. Aoralscan 3 has one of the best scanner software available.
Is shining 3D scan good for clear aligner treatment?
Yes the scanning is accurate. The most important thing is the operator and scan strategy used.
Hello, HAve you guys tested LAUNCA 206?
