  • Something's Changing in Asian Basketball...
The Asian market is undoubtedly the NBA's second most important economic engine, behind only the U.S. market. This is led by China, with its 1.4 billion inhabitants and enormous growing love for basketball, the country that generates the second most revenue for the best basketball league in the world. However, despite the NBA's huge presence in Asia, there do not seem to be many elite-level players from the East.
A shocking phenomenon considering that, like pop culture, the NBA tends to raise the level of play in the regions where its product is sold. In the league's entire history, only 18 players of Asian descent have ever landed a spot on one of its rosters. However, massive cultural globalization is turning the tables on Asia's significance in world basketball. But... What is the continent's historical past? And... what can we expect from them for the future?
In today’s video, we discuss how Something's Changing in Asian Basketball.... Yao Ming achieved what no other 7 foot 6 inch player could do, become a hall of famer. He really is one of a kind not just in China, but in the world. He didn't get there by being popular, he was extremely skills and mobile for his size. The game may have changed midway (became faster, more outside shooting), but he still had a huge impact on the game because you can never leave a 7 footer who can shoot alone by himself.

From the huge amount of Asian basketball players getting put into my feed, I imagine basketball is going through their own football (soccer) phase for Asians.
In football there were prominent good Asian players, however it was only one or two in a league at a time, however nowadays there’s 5-10 players in the premier league that are Asian. And they are good.
I think sports that are open play like basketball or football, or going through a phase with countries that aren’t known for that sport or being good at certain sports, having a new talent pool due to social media.
Historically weak countries are getting access to watching the best players since it’s so easy, and there’s bound to be one person, two people or more that can be good at a sport.
It’s very likely that they’ll be a lot more Asians in a lot of sports in the near future because of social media and it’s global influence.

Let's not discount the potential of 7'3 Center, 21-year-old Kai Sotto. He's currently showcasing his best basketball skills in the Japan B-League, averaging 19.2 points and 10 rebounds in 24.6 minutes over his last five games. Additionally, in the FIBA Asia Qualifiers over the past month, he averaged 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game, showing remarkable defensive prowess with a high number of blocks during the same period.
Remarkably, Sotto is still younger than many NCAA players entering this year's draft. He will undoubtedly have another opportunity soon.
His success could have a significant impact on the development of basketball in Southeast Asia.

    • @mr.sinjin-smyth

No doubt Kai has NBA potential, but it may take a few more years (2-3 years) of international experience before he's finally NBA ready. If he does make it, his best ceiling is alternating between starting and off bench. Similar to players like Zach Collins or Walker Kessler. But, Sotto just being in NBA will indeed create a tsunami of basketball fanfare across Southeast Asia.

We beg to differ. The best Asian player in history is Carlos Loyzaga of the Philippines, who was voted into the equivalent of the mythical five during the 1954 WC in Brazil, where the Philippines secured the Bronze, the highest ever finish by an Asian country in the WC. Yao Ming never accomplished that feat. And China has yet to win a medal in that level.
