Does the spring feel like it doesn't seat nicely? Mine doesn't and I don't know if that's normal

After I installed my tensioner about 6 miles into riding my chain exploded under 3/4 throttle.. Bad timing you think? Perhaps "finger tight" and loosen a turn according to instructions that came with it is vague? My only thought is it was too tight and the chain snapped. Thoughts?
