Doesn't take long to determine that it has engine mechanical problems.
Luckily, this issue is covered by a Jeep Extended Engine Warranty!!

I’ve seen a lot of this over the last several years and people should be outraged. There is absolutely no reason for them to be denying warranties when it’s the same exact cylinder head that’s being warrantied in other vehicles. They need to get together on a forum and file a class action lawsuit against these crooked manufacturers like Chrysler.

Jeep had a great engine known as the 4.0L inline six. Chrysler probably decided to stop using it because American Motors designed it, and it was too reliable, albeit fuel thirsty. From an old mechanic to a young one - if you have a obvious low cylinder on cranking, if at all possible pop the valve cover and check for bent/stuck valve, a bent pushrod, a loose rocker arm or a broken spring as long as it doesn't take forever to get it off. Yes it is fine to diagnose it using the computer or other diagnostic tools, but you still need to check the physical parts to identify the real source of the problem. It is too easy to jump to the conclusion that it has a bad head or a blown head gasket and write it off, costing your customer thousands.

Well the key thing here is Ivan already verified low compression on one cylinder. That means something is not sealing properly or its out of the correct timing (more likely with adjacent or more than one cylinder misfiring). Working on plenty of these pentastar engines, I can tell you I always see issues with cylinder heads, lifters, roller followers, camshafts and timing components. Half the time the ignition coils on these are suspect. But in this particular case, Removing the plenum to remove the left valve cover just to find out there might not be anything physically broken on that side would put Ivan 1hr into the labor part of the job and would be inconclusive. A leaking valve (most probable cause) is not something you can see really unless you remove the head. Typical diag is 1hr unless authorized for more. Ivan already checked and confirmed cylinder leakage was present with other tools. He diagnosed this the same way any high level Mopar technician would. Quick, accurate, and efficient using modern diagnostic equipment.

Customer got lucky only needing a spring. Most of the time , it ends up being exhaust valve not seating on bank 2. Bank 1 valves are also a problem as well along with the cam lobes rounding out due to bad roller followers on both banks. Had 2017 Charger with a fish bite misfire that barely could be felt on cylinder 5. Used in-cylinder pressure transducer and found uneven compression peaks while cranking to find it. Valve was seating intermittently. Great case study Ivan !

I can't imagine putting up with that kind of nonsense. No car is perfect Even Toyota's have their issues. But buying a car is like gambling a little bit. You might as well roll the dice in your favor if possible.
I'm driving around in a 13-year-old Toyota Prius with 394,000 mi on it. Still rolling on the original hybrid battery, still has all the original suspension components except for the struts themselves one of the shocks was leaking so I replaced them. Engine doesn't leak a drop of oil, it does burn a little bit but not enough to be seriously concerned about.
And surprisingly it's actually a pretty easy car to work on. Parts are readily available and not that expensive if you're willing to wrench on the car yourself.
I drive for a living so for me the car is only a tool for the job. I don't drive it because I'm some eco warrior. I drive it because the car costs me $0.08 per mile to operate.

I was a gm/hyundai tech over a decade ago. I was watching this same thing happen with jeep corporation as well as others. I've had so many jeep fans and die hard's rant and rave and brag up a storm about jeep products. I could never really agree with them. Nor would I argue with them (cause what's the point with hard head's..), Nor would I ever EVER own a new vehicle now days. 2000 and later models for me. No warranty to worry about, fix it myself. Have a broken part, replace, break out the welder, 3D print something, fabricate, ducktape, rig up a part from another vehicle, OR throw it away and get another one. I live in a town that is small and every road around here is 25-30mph. It takes ten minutes to get from one end of town to the other with the two lights green. Therefor I do not need some fancy mobile to cruise in luxury. I just need something that has a motor, enclosed, and gets me where I'm going a little faster than walking. Traveling down a highway at 70 average mph, you'd probably want something a little more sturdy, reliable, and cozy.
So my advise to those out there not liking how these manufactures, dealers, etc., operate. Stop buying the shitty products they push out there. Let their bottom lines and pockets dry up. Only then will they even begin, to think about being more honorable. Make decisions of home and job accordingly so that you don't become desperate enough to put yourself in these positions where they have you bent over coals. Trust me it is WAY more freeing to know that your vehicle is paid for and you can do whatever you little heart desire with it and to it. I used to own a fancy sports car a long time ago in a big city. I'd park way far away where no one would likely park next to me. I would call in on snow days so I wouldn't chance others crashing into me. Sure we got insurance and warranties etc., but I hardly had time as it was to have to now deal with scheduling repairs, courts, phone calls with dealer and insurances etc. etc.. Now I park where ever I want. Someone hits me, eh. Car stops working, I fix it. Car stops working and is unfixable, I scrap it and move on to another one. No having to go through other's "approvals" of what to do with my stuff that I worked very hard mentally and physically to earn. Short story long... You get what you pay for! It's possible to polish a turd(mythbusters), but ya know what happens when you took a look inside? It's still a turd. I have a car right now that leaks like a sieve. I look at the positives. Just keep adding fresh oil and ya never have to change the oil lol.

I had a similar experience with a Toyota Tacoma. Recall was for a spiral cable (clock spring) in the steering wheel. My year and VIN were both within the range of the recall but yet my vehicle did NOT qualify. I pressed Toyota for an answer because the situation didn't sit well with me. And after a bunch of back and forth, their answer was that "the year and VIN range in the recall are vehicles that COULD be affected. Using your full VIN, we determined that your vehicle is not affected." How could this be? My thought (no proof) is that they may have had more than one supplier of the part and only one was affected. Is it possible? I suppose. It's the only thought that makes sense because Toyota has been known to use parts from more than one manufacturer. Case in point - my truck, and many other V6 Toyotas, will come from the factory with 3 Denso and 3 NGK spark plugs. No lie.

@@walterk1221 This time is was a spring and I don't know enough about the design of these engines to know if the spring failure was just another symptom of the same bad design Also a simple google search shows people having left cylinder head problems on the penstar well before 100k and being told "those parts were made right" and those aren't covered by the extended warranty. My point is do you honestly trust the company to make the right call with regards to which specific parts are problematic. I have a recent example. I worked on a 2019 ford ecoboost with a failed purge valve, just out of warranty. Every year prior had a recall on that part. Ford says the 2019s were not covered. I have compared the parts and they are identical minus a quick disconnect being swapped to a more-expensive-to-replace heat shrinked plastic line. Do I trust that Ford retooled and redesigned the part and this was just a freak accident. Hell no.

GM did this as well from a personal experience. My mom's 2009 Malibu kept having the electronic power steering stop working intermittently while driving, which would make the wheel very hard to turn. I did some research and found where there was a recall for this very problem, however I called three different GM dealerships and they all said they would not cover it under that recall because the car was built at a different plant than the recalled ones. I asked if it had the same part, and their answer was yes but even though it was has the exact same part and part number because it was built at a different location they could not honor the recall. We own a 2007 Wrangler with 190,000 miles on it. Have had it since 2011 and have to say, other than basic repairs, it has been very good to us. Must admit, did have to have repairs done for a fork and flywheel problem. Was not into DIY repairs, so didn't pay too close attention, other than the cost, $1500. Obviously, with a 15 year auto one has to expect some repairs. Now, being retired. I've begun to learn automotive repairs. Have changed a water pump and radiator, a bad coil assembly, plugs and wires. Being well over the expected life span of a 3.8L V6, I've been vigilant when it comes to oil changes and keeping an eye out for any sign of trouble. Fingers crossed. I did recently go to the dealer for bolts for the hood cowling and a small can of touch-up paint. $50 and a cluster fuck of a time getting it to me has me not wanting to deal with 'Jeep' at all. Hace to say, all in all, it has been a great vehicle to own. But, now that Fiat owns it, I'm hearing lots of stories about shotty quality control and build quality. We're gonna keep this one, forever, and try to find a small, convertible roadster to keep it company, in the garage

A warranty recall affects a limited number of vehicles that for example, got a bad batch of left cylinder heads installed on a certain range of vehicles built from VIN x through VIN y. That doesn’t mean ALL 2013 models got that head and were subject to that recall. Apparently this example wasn’t, and that just a valve spring replacement fixed it, shows this.

Par for the course with modern cars (anything really). No real quality, and even worse customer service. My 2015 VW TDI has been pretty trouble free though besides the silly emissions stuff, but now the ABS is causing Christmas lights. It'll turn off the traction control, cruise control, power steering, and it'll randomly tap the brakes sometimes. Learned a ton watching this channel and hopefully I'll be able to get to the bottom of this ABS problem.

    • @SeersantLoom
      @SeersantLoom 2 года назад

@@dmc9535 @D Mc As Ivan stated - DTCs for running rich because one cyl not firing, but still supplied with fuel. Then oxygen sensor will measure the combustion gasses too rich. That affects other 2 cylinders on that bank too because ECU will try to compensate and runs those so lean they probably don't contribute much. Running on almost 3 out of 6 cylinders... it will certainly be felt.
$350 for some kinda plastic oil filter housing... I would guess it is not a "cheaping out" but a designed and planned feature for emptying customers pockets. Sell cheap/affordable but make parts and service as pricey as possible. Unfortunately, it is not a Jeep-only thing.

Not to stir the pot or anything, but I have noticed that there are a lot of click bait style headlines that tend to kind of single out the "dealer". Do you ever make videos that say ..."INDY SHOP MISSES FUSE" or is it just a normal diagnostic video. Coming from a past dealer tech and now working in the independent world, I find that ...honestly most of the messed up cars...well come from Indy shops. I love working in an indy shop and hate working at the dealer, but I feel the overall theme of dealer dealer dealer did this is kinda shitty to be honest. Do you ever use a TSB that really helped you out and thanked a dealer tech for basically working for free and spending ear melting time on a help line trying to sort that out to help future techs solve a problem quicker?

My 2011 Grand Cherokee got a new left head covered under warranty. From what I understood the valve guide diameter was too tight causing the valve to hang and drivability problems. I also had the roller rockers replaced and it cost me nothing except 3 new spark plugs on the right bank. Depends on the dealer and if your vehicle has the head in the recall.
