Started IRC-ing in 1992 with BitchX, Still use it. When I switched to Ubuntu from FreedBSD I installed KVirc. I use KVirc as my primary client and my BitchX clients as idlers. I'm a Oper on Efnet and KVirc does a good job.
*Quassel IRC* is great. Quassel IRC is a modern, cross-platform (Windows, Android linux, GNU Linux, , OS X) distributed IRC client, meaning that one (or multiple) client(s) can attach to and detach from a central core. I don't use that functionality currently though. The only problem I have with it is that it seems to inflate in memory use over time if you leave it running for a long time (weeks/months typically, depending how many chats you have open, and how active each chat is). The reason I like it is that it has all/most the big things most people would want in a IRC program: unicode support, multiple server support, chat log support, automatic name coloring of users, unified tab line that separates names from messages so that they're all aligned, notifications, cross-platform, free, can be portable (although I guess most programs can be). I used to use HydraIRC which I loved, but it doesn't support unicode, and it's development has been abandoned. It's also Windows-only.
Thank you Shannon! As a First time Chat user on Windows I am going to try mRIC. I want to make sure it is encrypted though - any suggestions on where I can get video documentation (GOOD DOCUMENTATION), on how to make sure I am anonymous and secure using this tool? My best!! Love your video!!
RUclips necro post: mIRC via WINE on Arch Linux here. I can't say for certain that it's 100% compatible, but I've yet to find anything with mIRC + WINE that is Windblows-only.
Maybe someone can help me. I'm a noob to all this but I'm trying to figure stuff out. when I went to download mIRC everything went fine, but as soon as I tried to enter into a chat I received a message that said I failed sasl authentication. I googled what to do next but nothing I've tried works. I'd appreciate any guidance
I used xchat for so many years until recently when I replaced it with hexchat (due to some xchat unavailability news, at least on fedora). Though, hexchat is exactly the same as xchat, maybe with a couple more settings.
Not really. You can just ssh to a remote server and run irssi (or whatever) client you choose there. Or use multiple servers to move through to mask you point of origin. Add Tor somewhere in between and you're pretty well covered.
I know it's a late reply, Mutter IRC is free iOS client, actively supported on the freenode and there are both iPhone and iPad versions. Hope this helps.
The best for mac is either Colloquy or the Adium IRC Xtra. I personally like the Adium Xtra more because its more customizable and all the themes that work on Adium works on the IRC Xtra. I think the only reason I built a Hackintosh is because of Adium.
And preferably do a screen irssi on server side :) You can also use Bitlbee etc.to include Skype chat, msn, facebook chat as well as IRC. For Android, there's a great SSH app IrssiConnectbot which is specifically made for mobile Irssi use.
As a native speaker, I recommend pronouncing "Irssi" as you would pronounce "Urssi". Goes least wrong that way. Or pronounce is as a native would, pronounce the first "i" as "e", then hard R and just "ssi". All vowels are pronounced "short"
You need to check out like you said several IRC clients, for instance you can run mIRC on Wine it works like a charm. You can use Icechat, Xchat of course, and many mIRC based scripts that you can run on "Wine" like BsMaxScript, Tglobe and the list goes on of course. My favourite of all time is BsMax but anti viruses started blocking it, I know it's not a virus, but again if you run it on a Linux (Wine) for instance you wouldn't have this problem at all. ICEChat is a very nice easy to use, and smooth interface check it out. As for a web interface you can run (on your web server ) lighIRC which is a flash Web IRC client beautiful interface, pretty much like the old (Java based web client) PJIRC.
Don't bother with XChat on windows, go with HexChat which is a heavily modified fork of XChat WDK which was a fork of XChat. Fuck mIRC and if you're using a POSIX complaint OS just say fuck it all and go with irssi or BitchX.
"Who hasn't used mIRC?" *raises hand slowly*
irssi on linux. on windows i use putty to SSH into the linux box and use irssi
+Christopher Miller This.
+Christopher Miller Windows was my daily driver for a good long while, Used Putty fullscreened, and X11 forwarding to pretend I was on linux..
+VoltzLiveYT I used x11 forwarding for a few years myself. These days I tend to just use VMware player though.
Finally decided to arch my home computer so no more fuckery at all!

XChat is somewhat discontinued - better go for it's fork hexchat…
You need to mention ircle for mac and Invision plugin for mIRC. Have you tried HydraIRC?

What a blast from the past.
I m unable to connect Dalnet in xchat as well as hexchat, its says connection reset by peers or remote host closed socket :( how to go about it???
AmIRC is my fave client, for AmigaOS. Im writing a mobile IRC client lib now to let people add IRC to any mobile app with one line of code :)
Hello, I'm new to using IRC. Is bouncers the only way to hide one's hostname?
Thank you Shannon! As a First time Chat user on Windows I am going to try mRIC. I want to make sure it is encrypted though - any suggestions on where I can get video documentation (GOOD DOCUMENTATION), on how to make sure I am anonymous and secure using this tool? My best!! Love your video!!

I love this channel..great videos..i was wondering what you would recommend for a good camera and software for producing youtube videos

"Started in 1999, so its totally old school" -loled
Well it is, when it comes to social things on internet.
Anyone got a way to install themes in Irssi in windows clients?
Would it be possible to chat in IRC from any devices (cross platform and cross devices) say my android tablet or (and switch to) my iPhone?
you can do it from basically any device that allows you to download IRC client applications
I know it's a late reply, Mutter IRC is free iOS client, actively supported on the freenode and there are both iPhone and iPad versions. Hope this helps.
Shannon we all need more of Shannon just saying :P
is bitchx any good?
very informative, thank you

I found Irssi is great for chat but if you download binaries from anyone it doesn't function for DCC transfers.
was waiting for BitchX to popup in the countdown lol
BitchX, FTW!
And preferably do a screen irssi on server side :) You can also use Bitlbee etc.to include Skype chat, msn, facebook chat as well as IRC. For Android, there's a great SSH app IrssiConnectbot which is specifically made for mobile Irssi use.
I think you should put the link to the shownotes in the description! Make it simple!
Feck yeah pick of the week is running my hak5 wallpaper!
I tend to just use Opera's built in IRC. It does what I need it to.
That too, can be plugged into IRC
can someone tell good IRC clients for android
Quassel! Can run a core and connect to it from any platform, good stuff.
you said you cant use mirc on linux you can all you need to do is install wine
my bad lol
and even if you were right, mirc makes no sense on linux compared to hexchat which you can encrypt with fishlim
irssi is good too, they have their own encryption plugin
yeah i mean i chill the Ubuntu server on Ubuntu chat aswell if you ever stop by just look for seek thats me but yeah you seem pretty chill
Aaarh
HexChat when lazy, irssi otherwise.
Irssi #1 :)
mIRC is the best and top IRC Client 99.9% people use.
Irssi all the way!
no love for Quassel?
YChat (Which is the one you called 'XChat'. The correct name is XChat2/YChat :P)
weechat

I still hope Zed will continue with XChat one day..
1999 is old school? WTF
mIRC with invision.
I would like to use Shannon :)
I've always used pjirc and chatzilla.
Xchat, because there is something great about the directions to it. you don't need them.
xchat is now hexchat love it !!!
Love irc
mIRC works fine under Wine, even as a channel bot
Old vid but IRSSI of course... :)
thnx shannon :P
I use mIRC on WINE for Ubuntu
Been using Xchat since the late 90's, used BitchX before that
I like BitchX, just for the name...
It's gone...
No way a web plugin is better than irssi. IMO, irssi is #1
Started using mIrc now use Xchat
Irssi. By far.
irssi should be #1.
It is free on Windows.
Xchat doesn't existe anymore, Hexchat is the fork? you have miss mibbit.kiwirc
As a native speaker, I recommend pronouncing "Irssi" as you would pronounce "Urssi". Goes least wrong that way. Or pronounce is as a native would, pronounce the first "i" as "e", then hard R and just "ssi". All vowels are pronounced "short"
what are you even talking about? A "native" speaker? A native speaker of what?
xchat 2 is free I used it use it now I use mIRC
irssi FTW!
Most IRC users laugh at people using chatzilla...
Only weechat is worthy.
Apparently the kids these days are using this thing called facebook.
shell access + irssiaaaand tmux
weechat...
HexChat is better then XChat in my opinion. It's a fork of XChat I believe but it costs on Windows.
I like Hexchat
emacs erc-mode!
thrashirc is nice.
mirc+nnscript
You need to check out like you said several IRC clients, for instance you can run mIRC on Wine it works like a charm.
