*I'm up for my R renewal next year, wow almost 15 years of happily living here!* 🌴👍
Ralphie boy, I’m retired 16 in August, next year hoping to get my first Visa!
Thank you Laura. It's worth mentioning that the Migrant visa is not just for investors. I am retired and not an investor and they issued me the 3 year Migrant visa.
Hi Nolan, of course, during the video we mentioned the most common ones.
Hi Laura, I didn’t hear you discuss a “retirement visa,” or does it fall under a category already discussed, such as the “R” visa? Also, if I’m looking to apply for a retirement visa, can it be done while I’m still living in the USA, or do I need to be there in Colombia? Also, what is the cost of making application from the USA, and making application while in Colombia? Thank you in advance for responding to my questions.
@@clarencecovington5702 Hi Clarence, the "retirement visa" is under the Migrant category. To answer your question: Yes, you can apply while you are abroad, you don't need to be physically in Colombia to proceed with the visa process. If you want further info, don't hesitate to write me at laura@izalegalservices.com
Hermosa que orgullo de sobrina muy bendecida e inteligente Dios me la bendiga
Such a great and informative video, thanks guys!
As always thanks Sam, we have purchased our retirement home and are starting to prepare to move at the end of the year between tax obligation, visa headaches etc. we are questioning weather or not we made the right decision. It is a nightmare trying to navigate these obstacles. One thing that I have found is that no one really can give you a straight answer.
It can get very confusing, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask at info@izalegalservices.com
Laura was awesome !
Sam, Great work and fantastic video.
Great informative interview!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for sharing
This is going international can you please talk dollars please 🙏 is not just Colombians is 150 more countries
I understand you completely, however the amounts that needs to be considered are in COP, so it's best to convert from your currency to Colombian pesos considering that the exchange rate changes every hour and day and the requirements are in COP
They cannot realistically list the amounts in all the currencies, especially considering that the numbers would not remain valid for more than a day (due to fluctuating exchange rates).
Simply enter the amount you want to convert into a decent internet search engine. For example, if you're Canadian, write: 319,000,000 COP to CAD
great video, Laura is my attorney
Thank you, for sharing this valuable information. you re appreciated .
I have a question on the Business Investment Visa - Can you arrange investment in a Colombian company listed on the Colombian Securities Exchange such as BanColombia Smurfit Kappa or CEMEX SA. This seems like a sensible idea as it is a lower COP$ input value of COP$90k. Do you have to invest in one company or can you invest in a Colombian Securities Exchange index tracker or mutual to reduce the risk of buying a single company?
I would love to know the answer to this as well. It is something I was questioning as well.
@@kariml5461 with gbp / usd v Cop$ at record highs and colombuan stocks depressed due to the pandemic there is a very real recovery play here. A possible once in a lifetime opportunity.
Investing in a business as a shareholder has its limitations, you cannot choose one without having access to their accounting. For example, you need at least direct access to their accountat for certificated and access to their tax declaration. Therefore, it is not simply a matter of choosing any successful company to invest in. In most of them you can invest only in their portfolio but the sole investment in a portfolio is not enough to comply with the R visa. If you would like more info please contact us at info@izalegalservices.com
@@andrewhughes712 That's an interesting thesis. I also like to look at emerging market equities from time to time. I think however the only way to purchase these shares would be from inside Colombia? It is too bad that buying publicly traded shares is not considered as a foreign investment for Visa purposes.
Great Job
Thanks!
Sam, If I am a Digital Nomad, what category of visa would I have to apply for and how long would it take to be eligible to apply for Colombian citizenship?
tell me more about a marriage visa, can you explain whole process I'll appreciate thanks
HI, you can write me to laura@izalegalservices.com and I'll personally assist you.
I got a business visa using advice from James Lindsay, can agree that it is not an ideal setup. Could also be that he royally messed up the application by setting up the business to make my wife the primary instead of me. Ended up costing me millions of pesos just to fix his errors.
Thank you Sam, I am an American citizen. I have been in Puerto Morelos for almost a year before coming to Columbia. I’ve been here in Medillin since 3/31/22. I really love it. I want to get a retirement visa. Before my 90 days are up, I will pay for an extension. I will go home pick up bank statements showing adequate social security coming in each month. marriage license, we separated after 5 mos. not legally separated. I already have my birth certificate. I know I will have to make an appointment. Is that all the paperwork I will need? Will I need to pick up my background check? What paper will I have to have translated to Spanish? The closest Columbian Consulate is in Houston Texas. Will I have to go to Bogata and let them know my intentions ? Will I need to gather this paperwork before I do to Bogata. I am so confused. Can you please help me with some answers? Witnesses I do this I want to do it right. Thank you.
question to the lawyer, what's the safest best way to nationalize funds over $20,000 usd without having too much in fees and lower exchange rates slip between the cracks?
The safest way? Through an intermediary approved by Central Bank, in our case the best choice we recommend is Alianza Valores.
@@laura-izalegalservices872 thanks safe as in too many restrictions on transfers due to narcos. Not all of humans are traquetos but the colombian government think so, and what is alianza valores?
@@nadicmark-4077 They are the most transparent on the process and are supervised by the superintendency, DIAN and Central Bank, and are obligated to tell you how much is their fee.
@@laura-izalegalservices872 awesome, do you have any contacts there ?
@@nadicmark-4077 Yes, just write to laura@izalegalservices.com and I'll send the introduction email to them
The most significant FINANCIAL factor in obtaining the M-11 visa (retired) is a vaguely/unstipulated by Migracon on the website, of health insurance requirements. This insurance MONTHLY premium can easily range from $400(US) per month to $2,000(US) per month...depending face value/coverage of the policy. As an experienced hand with Colombian visas, can you shed some light on "policy coverage" requirements in obtaining a visa?
Retirement visa: investment income can be from rental properties (in US)? What documentation, besides leases, would be required to prove that?
Retirement visa is exclusively for retirement, not from rental income.
I have questions..when it comes to the income needed of $800 USD per month...is that per person? What about a married couple? Or a family of 4? How does that affect the numbers?
Yes, per foreign investor. If the foreigner is married or has children they can get the beneficiary visa.
So with the business visa, its an investment of roughly 25k USD but says it lasts 1-3 years...does that mean every year you have to invest more or you have to continue to show that your business is running to continue to have this visa extended?
These are interesting questions and similar ones apply for multiple types of visas.
For example, if you buy real estate but the amount requirement increases above what you invested in your property (it does increase every year), are you able to renew your visa or do you need to buy more real estate?
@@drewskeez1156 Yes, if I understand correctly the Resident real estate visa would only need to be purchased once, though I assume you would need to keep the property or anyone could simply buy an expensive property, get the R visa, sell the property and then stay in the country forever at no cost.
The Migrant real estate visa however only lasts one to three years. What if you spend just enough and, once it's time to renew, your investment doesn't meet the requirement anymore? That was what I was wondering.
@@drewskeez1156 I think investment at time of purchase would make the most sense, but when it comes to bureaucracy you never know. Some government employee could tell you that your investment does not match current requirements and your visa can't be renewed.
Even if the M visa didn't require renewal, there are reasons why some would want an R visa instead. With an R visa you can work legally and you're only five years away from citizenship, whereas the M visa does not allow you to work and would leave you ten years away from citizenship. It's why the R visa is so much more expensive.
Still, I agree that spending 90k on a very, very nice house is better than spending 170k and having to manage a ridiculously huge and fancy piece of property. Even if you can't work, you'll be better off just spending less and taking a 5-year vacation.
If the amount invested in the company is the minimum required (2021 = COP$90,000,000) and the visa is granted for only one year, it means that the next year you must adjust the value for the minimum required of the following year.
@@BigSlimyBlob The investment must be adjusted, that's why it's advisable to not invest in the bare minimum, but to register it with a bit more of the minimum requested.
Hi I have one question
I have a visa type v , so when I will come to colombia how can I make residency for get the Colombian ID ?
Thanks
HI, you can write me to laura@izalegalservices.com and I'll personally assist you.
Great video! thanks to the both of you. I had one question about the R visa. For the 590,000,000 investment into RE, can that be more than one property for that total amount? and any tips on execution for obtaining the R visa using more than one property to make up the sum?
Yes, there is no limit. Can be several real estate properties, the most important is the registration of the funds at Central bank, independently of the type of investment.
@@laura-izalegalservices872 OK great, thank you so much for your response :)
It would have been useful to have USD or EUR conversions for these amounts...

What about retirement visa do you process I’m thinking retiring in Colombia
HI, you can write me to laura@izalegalservices.com and I'll personally assist your case.
Are there any exceptions to the age requirement regarding pensioners visa. ?
What type of Visa do I need if I want to live in Colombia, but want to work for a US company remotely that has no presence in Colombia? Do I need to pay Colombian taxes if I am not employed by a Colombian company?
I have the same question. It sounds Colombia doesn't have a great option for us if we don't have the cash to invest upfront.
@@Ryan-ul7dy Unfortunately that's partially true, there are other type of visas for foreigners different than the ones directed for investment but the process is very scrutinized and complicated. The main concept of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migration is that if you are planning to permanently live in Colombia then you must also show a benefit for the colombian people/government, like health insurance affiliation, income for nationals or employment opportunities. If there is no real reason for you to stay permanently in Colombia different than "enjoy" the country without any retribution, they don't offer any choices.
What is the tax obligation for each type of Visa? I am a Canadian citizen who owns a business in Canada that pays me in dividends. I was planning to use the business to apply for a rentista visa, however, I was told there would be a 12% tax on the dividends that will be paid towards the Colombian welfare program. What is my tax obligation if I obtained an R investment visa or an M parternship visa? My only income is from my business in Canada which is dividend income....
Thanks for the information. These issues are complicated in a LOT of countries. My question relates to requirements for time in country while you have the visas. How many days are you required to be physically IN Colombia each year when you have the Migrant visa? And how many days are you required to be physically IN Colombia each year when you have the Resident visa?
My sense is that in exchange for the lower investment required for the Migrant Real Estate visa (relative to the Resident Real Estate visa), they require you to be physically present for more days each year. Is that accurate?
Thanks in advance!
Hi! The requirements lays more on the period of time you leave Colombia. With the Migrant Visa the foreigner can't leave the country for more than 6 months in a row. For the residency visa there is no limit, the residency visa doesn't have a term as it's permanent.
@@laura-izalegalservices872 Thank you!
@@eurodude2556 That was before when the visa expired in 5 years. The Residence visa is permanent, it does not expire in 5 years, so if you leave for 2 years and return, they will not "cancel" your visa because you left the country for a long time.

I need Colombia Visa
Hello. Oaw
I have been to Colombia a few times.. It's a beautiful country... However, in my opinion, it is unfortunate that it is such a sex tourism destination. This is especially true pertaining to Medellin. Also, I must say that so many Colombians see a European or American as a walking billfold. This is a fact of many countries in the world. I contemplated retiring in Colombia, however there are easier destinations to go regarding a visa and driver's license. For some it may be ideal, but as one of your videos mentioned, be prepared for a lot of noise.. Loud music, motorcycles, etc, etc.. Also, it is an absolute must to understand the Spanish language. Finally safety.. Don't ever let your guard down in Colombia, especially after dark.. Thieves are lurking at every corner waiting for their chance..
Hello and thank you for this comment! We were contemplating retiring in Colombia as well. There were so many articles about how easy it is. But now it looks like it's getting unreasonably difficult. If I may ask, what do you mean by "there are easier destinations to go"? What countries have reasonable requirements for the retirees? Thank you.
@@marinagesina5066 It depends greatly on your present nationality. There are tax implications to consider. There are social security requirements to consider. Minimum income requirements to be Eligible for temporary visa.
Possibly, minimum investment to receive temporary visa. Let me know what passport you hold and I can give you an idea of where you can most easily reside legally.
@@comrade916 I am a US citizen
@@marinagesina5066 Hello Marina, Take a look at Mexico, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Argentina. All have relatively low income/investment thresholds to gain a temporary residence. Mexico, in particular has low taxes across the board. Driver's license is relatively easy to obtain in any of these countries either by transferring U.S. D.L. or applying for new. Healthcare is great in Mexico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. It's good in Argentina as well.. As for safety..? Well, these countries all have issues regarding crime. Especially petty crime.. Bag snatching, etc.. One always has to be on guard and careful of surroundings.
@@comrade916 Thanks a lot!

I would like this lawyer's number.
Or email. Because I want to visit Colombia. Thank u😇
All this numbers don’t make sense . Could you give us the numbers in US dollars...?
Migrant Visa = $91,142.00 USD. Residency Visa = $168,600.00 USD. Business Investors Visa = $25,714.00 USD. These numbers are based on the Colombian Peso (COP) valued at 3500 pesos = $1.00 US Dollar (USD). However, the value of the Peso does fluctuate a little bit, but this is a fairly good average of the COP
Thanks :D
It would have made little sense to give amounts in USD because the exchange rate fluctuates, the USD amounts are different every day while the amount in COP are valid for the year.
Most internet search engines will do currency conversions. For example if you wanted to know how much 100,000 COP is in USD, you would simply need to type in: 100,000 COP to USD
@@BigSlimyBlob I understand you, however that would be irresponsable from our side, we can't talk in dollars precisely because the requirements are in COP, so if I tell you that the minimum required is 25k and then with the exchange rate it increases to 27k or reduces to 23k, then the information provided wouldn't be accurate.
@@laura-izalegalservices872 Exactly. The exchange rate changes so any amounts not in COP would be inaccurate most of the time.
Besides, not everyone watching the video is from the USA.
Giving the requirements in COP was the right choice.
Is Laura looking for a gringo husband? Lol
But no, this is good information and much appreciated. Muchas gracias!
