So, today is the official start of the dragon boat festival 2023 here in Taiwan! My first dragon boat festival in fact, this 3 day competition comprises of teams from around Asia, including the Philippines and others.
We explore along the river banks where the teams are warming up, check out some of the racing itself, and then sample some of the delights at the food stalls.
First we try the cheesiest mozzarella sticks on planet Earth, followed by a traditional dish eaten at the dragon boat festival- Zongzi; sticky rice stuffed with pork and spices wrapped in bamboo leaves....I mean...what is NOT to absolutely LOVE here??? Simply amazing!
The opening ceremony wasn't anything to rave about, just a bunch of dignitaries & sponsors being brought up to the stage over a period of 45 minutes. Pretty boring.
Thank you for watching today and I hope you enjoyed this video, have an awesome day! 🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼

    Hi handsome bear!
The zongzi you had was the indigenous people zongzi instead of regular ones that covered with bamboo leaves or shell ginger leaves. However, all of them are yummy.

      Yes, it was yum 😋

    • @PinocchioXIII
      @PinocchioXIII Год назад +1

@@DanvsFood And those leaves are edible because it was an indigenous people version of zongzi so that no need to be worry.
I think that one was covered with khasya trichodesma leaves as the second layers and filled up with pork or wild pork and foxtail millet so I'm pretty sure that was a chinavu.
In indigenous people language they call it chinavu
and the foxtail millet is the yellow thing that you said it's similar to couscous.
indigenous people use it to make foxtail millet wine as well.
Also, the staff who sold that to you already peeled off the bamboo leaves for you, so you're fine. :)

i don't think the custom of dragonboat racing existed in Taiwan before the end of ww2. It was Kmt that brought this custom to Taiwan after ww2. As for Zongzi, people in Taiwan and in southeast Asian countries as well have had the habit of carrying the foods wrapped in different types of leaves with them when they've had to travel away from home since time immemorial. The zongzi you ate in this video is made in Formosan Austronesian indigenous type which is pretty different from Chinese version of Zongzis.

@@DanvsFoodn fact, many Taiwanese aborigines have had a boat racing culture similar to dragon boat from a long time ago.
During the Qing Dynasty, many dragon boat races were held in Taiwan already.
During the Japanese occupation period, there were also grand many dragon boat races in places such as Tamsui River and Kaohsiung Port.
For example, the painting "扒龍船" painted by painter Cai Xue-xi in 1930 depicts the scene of Taipei people watching dragon boat races in Dadaocheng.
