How about Gran Turismo 1 vs Gran Turismo Sport? GT1 was way ahead of it's time when it came out; it was one of the first instances of realistically-portrayed, real-life cars with real-time reflections in any game, period. And now, Gran Turismo Sport has an absurd level of detail put into each and every car model. Not only that, the tracks are highly detailed, and the lighting and reflections are near perfect. It also has in my opinion one of the best photo modes I have seen in any game. I feel like this is definitely worth a mention.
Some more games to compare: Mario Kart SNES vs Mario Kart 8 God of War 2005 vs God of War 2018 Zelda OoT vs Zelda BotW Rayman 1995 vs Rayman Legends Mega Man vs Mega Man 11
If that's the case then we don't need gaming PCs or next gen hardware and should have stopped at PS2/Xbox era of graphics. There are separate teams graphics are solely worked by 3d artists and programmers/engineers work on game logic and gameplay mechanics for example. I think it's decisions made from the upper management concerned with budget and launch windows to appease the shareholders are what hurt the games.
Not necessarily, immersion is determined by how the story, characters/events, and music makes us feel. FF7 and RE 2 have terrible graphics in today's world but are still extremely immersive. I don't think bettering FF7's graphics will make the game any more immersive
But I mean back in the PS1/ps2 era companies could afford to experiment and take risks with their games because story/gameplay mattered the most in selling games. Now in today, graphics evolved so fast and everyone is pushing for graphics that it's become extremely expensive to produce games just because of graphics (graphics sell, not gameplay these days) Meaning fewer companies produce big games and almost no risks are taken and very little experimentation, it's too big a risk. The indie scene does this, but that market is much smaller than AAA games. If we had slowed down and just focused on game design and slowly evolved graphics, we'd have more great games today imo
Loved that intro, and the video! Really love these videos, because it reminds me just how far graphics have come along. Just wait until a decade from now 😬 Also, what was the intro song?
Gran Turismo for sure With each game people went "this is so real", I even remember comparison photos in the official Playstation 2 magazine. Real life vs. GT4 basically same scene and me and my friend were like "you can't even tell the difference anymore".
Assassin's Creed when launched was a huge leap in graphical and animation detail over the very best of the 6th gen consoles. The interaction walking through the crowd, how your character would push or brush his way through was technically impressive at the time.
Well played! You got me good with that Half-life 3 bit. It was so good, that I thought, for just a half a second, that I had missed the announcement. 😆 Lol Nice1!!
If you do another one, maybe include a sports game? The original FIFA or madden made it impossible to know which player was which, but now they have realistic played likenesses!
I remember when Warcraft 2 came out and i was so shocked from the opening cinematic that i had to run to my friend's house and drag him back to show him. Now when i look at it it's literally a pile of pixels moving around :D
I actually remember looking at alot of different games of the older variety when I was young and wondering when they will look like what CGI movies looked like at the time such as Shrek or Toy Story. What's crazy is that we're already on the cusp of that with real time ray traced lighting being here on PC and on the horizon for consoles of the coming Generations.
Wolfenstein 3D is what turned me into a gamer. I originally played it on my IBM PS1, which had a 286 chip and only the rudimentary audio of the time.
