7 Awesome Abilities That Were More Trouble Than They Were Worth

  • Sometimes in videogames you will often find yourself in possession of a weapon or ability that seems great at first, only to discover that when you use it, it's more trouble than it's worth. Here are just some of the times we’ve encountered that very thing. Enjoy, and subscribe for a video like this every Thursday, why not?
    Take air support in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, for example.
    Call in air support on your iDroid and your helicopter pilot Pequod storms in, playing his music at full volume and starts strafing everything in sight with miniguns, which alerts everyone to your presence, causes a load of mayhem, and stops you being able to score a perfect S rank on the mission.
    He then usually gets shot down, costing you a bunch of money. Cheers Pequod.

    When it came to Skyrim, I always did the Companions quest line early on to get the werewolf blood. All the perks, none of the cons. No one attacks you on sight (unless in wolf form). Immune to diseases. No sunlight damage. Plus the wolf form looks way more appealing. The only real con is the lack of rest bonus from sleeping. But let's face it, the only time we sleep in the game is when we get that urge to go to a shady inn where we get kidnapped by a crazy chick.

    I'm amazed the Armageddon spell even works. You can't exactly test that sort of power out to make sure it's functioning correctly.

    • @raze667
      @raze667 6 лет назад +130

      Think of magic like programming. You make a spell that removes water from something. Then edit the spell to change water to life. It very likely won't work, but if it does: Bang everything everywhere dies.

    • @terreliv
      @terreliv 6 лет назад +65

      Or you get it to work within a certain distance and power it up to kill everyone. Or it was always meant to be used within a protective spell and no one thought to use it outside of that and ergo didn't account for the power.

      +Sam Moyer
      More like: You edit the spell to change water to life. The -compiler- ritual informs you about 900 warnings and 15 errors, many of which involve attempts at implicit typecasting. And when cast, the spell crashes with an exception you don't recognize, so you have to consult -Google- a number of ancient scrolls to figure out what went wrong.

    • @marhawkman303
      @marhawkman303 6 лет назад +27

      Cyfrik I personally think of it like a scaling thing. 1 stick of dynamite makes a bang, but it won't blow up a town. But use enough dynamite and the entire town becomes a smoking ruin. So for this you take a spell designed to insta-kill people, then increase the area of effect to the entire planet.

    The number of times I used fatman in fallout 3-4 and had it kill no one because a 2 foot concrete rail or a stair was in the way and it did almost no damage to any mobs blew my mind.

    • @Alsebra

      I didn't have issues with low walls or the like with my fatman shots...I rarely had the things land anywhere near the targeted enemy (more often than not, they dropped early in their arc and landed closer to me than their target...even when fired out of VATS (since VATS can mess with the shots, too)).
      That said, I did make some use of explosives in New Vegas...the character in question was a former demolitions expert, so I focused on explosives over firearms (but I did pull with a weak weapon on occasion, just to have the enemies run headlong into my minefield).

    You forgot the Thermonuclear Explosion spell from Quest for Glory 5. This spell was the wizard's reward for a fairly hard quest about halfway through the game (the fighter and thief got actual good rewards). When you cast it you get a nice cut scene of a nuclear explosion going off centered on the area you were at, which destroys a large part of the map, then you get the game over screen.
    Speaking of the Experimental MIRV. I had a friend who wanted to see how some of the cool weapon animations in Fallout 3, so I went into god mode and started killing people in Megaton. I watched one of the invulnerable NPCs run into my house. I was curious so I followed him inside and saw him run over to where I had the MIRV of display next to a stack of ammo. Here's a trick regarding Fallout 2. Each time you create a save file, the game actually creates a folder with various files containing the data for your character (stats, inventory, quest advancement etc.) as well as the data for each zone of the game (the NPCs still alive, the items in the containers, etc.)
    With that knowledge of how the system works, it is possible to pass on the hintbook from an endgame character to a new game one, for instance by placing the book in a specific container of a specific zone, then exiting the game, discreetly swapping out the save files for that zone, and picking up the hintbook that magically appeared in your new character's container.
    Once the book is in your inventory, it's suggested to swap the zone fille back to the original one, in case there were some key items and NPC's that weren't there anymore in your endgame, for whatever reason. Now enjoy being a god in the wasteland :)

      but it's pretty broken good as it'll stunlock foes till they die from the pretty good damage, so it's definitely very awesome - plus you could potentially use your jetpack here and get distance even without backing up.
      imo the REALLY bad thing is you have to wait a long time to get shit like that: you basically can't fight worth dick for like 10 levels until you're able to join a group - so you've got to run around avoiding fights like you'll die in one hit doing quests till level 10 (with like level 30 ish the softcap)

      I dealt with it by either spending the 14 "day hours" (5 am - 7 pm) not entering pitched battles (I'd not avoid all fights, just the ones that'd be a slog) and/or doing combat out of the sun...if you think about it, a *lot* of your combat encounters aren't going to be taking place outside and definitely during the daytime. Hell, I got to the point that even taking down legendary dragons during high noon as a vampire wasn't an issue...

  • @ruggedlemmings9163
    @ruggedlemmings9163 6 лет назад +1060

    The thing that you seem to be forgetting about becoming a Vampire Lord in Dawnguard (other than the fact that no, people don't immediately attack you at Stage 4) is that...well...your character is now a vampire and probably should start behaving like one. Night becomes your new day (until you complete the main quest and can just give the sun a black eye any time you want). Seriously though, if you need to feed you're not just going to go into a house with 2/3 people awake and in the same room as the person you're going to bite...vampires are sneakier than that. There's also plenty of ways to compensate for your weakness to fire (be they racial traits or just getting fire resistance enchantments).
    Another thing to note is that unless town guards or civilians actually SEE you turn into a Lord, you'll loose all of your bounty for whatever you did in the Vampire Lord form once you get away and change back to normal (since the guards/civilians had no way to know who that Vampire Lord actually was) much like how you can put on the Grey Fox's Cowl in Oblivion, do whatever you want, then lose all of your bounty once you take it off.
    On top of all of this, the Vampire Lord form makes for a great "Oh shit!" button if you find yourself losing on a fight (assuming you're not outside in the day and haven't shot out the sun). The AoE Drain Health does a crap ton of damage while healing you for a ridiculous amount...really that's all you need, everything else - like the Gargoyles that absolutely murder everything - is just icing on the cake.
    You can say you just don't like the vampire playstyle (being forced into 3rd person every time you change forms and having trouble with doors are definitely two of the very valid complaints that come with being a vampire), but "more trouble than it's worth"? I'd say not, you just have to actually enjoy playing the game as though you were playing a vampire, and thus play as though your character were a vampire...because they are.
    ...................all that said, I still have way more fun as a modded werewolf that has a random chance of spontaneously changing at sun-down and being forced to stay in ww form the entire night. :^)

    On a slightly less theoretically overpowered note, you'd think that the spell Stun from Might and Magic 6 would be at least marginally useful, given that it forces the target to go through its recovery before it can do anything again. It's also cheap, and available very early on.
    The problem comes when you realise that monsters have different recovery mechanics to the player-controlled party. They seem to operate on a fixed-time recovery, and the spell Stun doesn't actually trigger that. So it seems to exist purely to allow monsters to cast it on the party... except that there is literally no monster in the entire game which can cast Stun.

    For me it is all about the RP, not simply practicality or what's objectivly better.

    As a side note:

      I was planning on waiting to become a vampire because of the issue with being a melee assassin character and fighting ancient dragons that always breathe fire. But then I made a mistake and did too much fast travel and so my vampirism advanced too far and I don’t really want to bother doing anything else to heal it. But it’s kinda nice to be able to stand on top of light sources or walk through broad daylight or stand on top of characters while sneaking and still somehow be unnoticed. So it’s not too bad.

Compare to lycantropy -it is also a "curse" but the only real negative I can see is...not getting bonus rested experience from sleeping? whoop dee doo. Weakness to silver is not really a negative considering you never really see silver weaponry outside of the questline itself so everyday questing is a non issue. People attacking when transformed in either case should not count cause duh, you are a monstrous vampire/werewolf.

    Being a vampire in Skyrim is massively op if you know what you’re doing. Be an assassin or warrior (wizards surprisingly get the short end of the stick here) get the necromage perk from the restoration tree, and voila, all of your magic effects are doubled. This includes any perks with scaling effects, enchantments, standing stones, self targeted spells, shouts, and buffs. Use elemental fury with a battle axe and it will feel like using daggers. Use dual daggers with elemental fury and it will feel like a chain saw. All you have to do is wait until night if it’s daytime. Or you could use storm call and block the sun. Also every effect of dragon aspect is doubled as well.

However, it is entirely possible to do so without getting the nuclear bomb you need to complete your mission or the lead box required to survive the radioactive gemstone the boss drops that you need to escape and win the game, and that's not counting the lack of ammo and health potions you need for the fight itself that you'd be missing.
    Oh, and even if you get through all of that, you end up stuck in a dead end after a point of no return as the final boss room exit leads to a room in a previous level on the wrong side of a one way door, which you open by playing through the other levels normally. If you skip to the final boss before opening it, you cannot complete the game even if you beat the boss. Oops.

      It just depends what you prefer to play as either mage or warrior build , a vampire lord is much more powerful than a werewolf though and thats a fact

      A werewolf is not better but not worse either i have killed so many werewolves i even had a mod that makes multiplayer a thing and i rekt my friends were wolf and he had the ring of hircine (the buyable one in solsteim) but also i easily defeated harkon with a werewolf so no a vampire lord and werewolf are equal im strength

      Vampire Lord has no benefit to it though, any mage with four 25% mana reduction enchants and a halfway decent destruction spell can outdamage a vampire lord's best attacks easily. At least werewolf is a decent crutch for low level stealth characters in certain situations and it's a decent way to not get vampired by mistake

    Becoming a vampire on Morrowind was worse than oblivion and skyrim put together. Also, the boots of blinding speed in Morrowind which you mentioned are useless by themselves, But accompanied with the Saviors hide chest piece found in Tel Fyr which dispells 100% Makes them completely useable and s great way to travel at great speeds.

    • @SoloAdvocate
      @SoloAdvocate 6 лет назад

      Or you just do 100% resist magika for 1 sec on self and put them on real quick. Getting those boots and being able to cast that spell was always the first thing I did on new games.

    • @smokinghand8844
      @smokinghand8844 6 лет назад

      @@cdru515 Yeah. But if you notice when you do partial, your vision is still obscured. By that I mean it makes the darkness of your screen worse, Depending on your brightness settings can make it harder to see in dark areas. This happens ever so slightly even with the saviors hide or 100% Resist spells.

      Oblivion had it the worst with vampirism. At least in morrowind, people didn't go to bed and lock their doors making it hard to be civilized while avoiding the sun. But common, level 4 vampirism doesn't make NPCs hostile with dawnguard. These guys didn't even try it, but read about it and started bitching.

      On the PC you can just set hotkeys to switch between the Boots of Blinding Speed and regular footwear. This makes them quite usable even without resist magic trickery.

    Forget the forced third-person perspective while in vampire lord form, I'm still pissed about the forced third-person while riding a horse. Among the many other things that do so in Skyrim, that totally kills the immersion.

      Actually everything kills the immersion in that game. The fact that you can shoot an arrow into someone and they will be like must have been nothing. How about the fact that every guard you run into has the same dialogue about taking an arrow to the knee.

    Ultima IX actually had a few abilities like this.
    * The final two-handed sword technique could only be found towards the endgame, where you had to first sail your ship to a secret dock, then dive through treacherous water to reach an underwater crypt. The move itself was a figure-8 swing that was slow, only hit once at the end, and was very hard to aim.
    * The Death Spell, which used to instantly kill most enemies, was now a slow ritual that forced you to stand still, and didn't work most of the time due to its unnecessary animation being heavily glitched.
    * The flaming arrow bow technique required you to carry oil flasks in your inventory, taking up valuable inventory space.
    * The blackrock cuirass required you to avoid completing a church quest, in order to remain in the Thieves Guild's good graces. Then once you equipped it, going swimming anywhere caused you to sink like a rock.
    I mean, golly, it's almost like the developers didn't think any of this through.

    "Boots of Blinding Speed" were the best item in Morrowind. If you had a magic resistance of 100 when you put them on, you eliminate the blindness for the entire time you wear them. I wore those and a permanent flight 1 helmet, because the flying hat amused me, and zoomed everywhere at ridiculous speeds.

    I was mostly disappointed that being a vampire lord didn't come with a badass cape, and that I couldn't even STEAL Harkon's after he was dead. Plus there's only one vampire mode model for the player, regardless of gender or species, which SUCKS.

    I can't believe you didn't put the elder scrolls 4: Oblivion on this list. Being a vampire in that game is way more of a hassel than it is in skyrim. It gave you those really cool stat boosts, but it could also kill you with sun damage. And that could also happen during fast travel or while you waited

    • @smokinghand8844

    • @MyrahHolmes

      Lol, my longest running character is an imortal vampire who I've been playing since Morrowind. Since she's also been a daedra ever since the oblivion crisis she sometimes also goes universe hopping and explores other games as well. But hey, she's sheogorath, anytime she gets bored she scatters all those daedric artifacts she's collected to the winds again, fudges her own memory and jumps back into nirn. Lol, I had so much fun RPing her in the dark brotherhood questline especially... she was seriously unimpressed with Astrid and how the db had gone downhill since last she was running it but she was pleased to see cicero again.

      MasterZebulin $10 to ban anyone from the internet forever? That is the absolute worst idea ever. Half of the people on the internet would be banned within a day! Some sh*tbag would just pay $100 to permanently ban the creators of the top 10 RUclips channels because he wants to ruin their lives. Every annoying kid with access to their parents’ credit card would instantly ban anyone they dislike in every online game ever. The worst people on the internet would conquer it, because decent people would hesitate to take such drastic action. It would be anarchy at its most brutal.

    Having enjoyed door gunning, I will say its most useful function is becoming exponentially more important than anything else they are doing, as soon as the noise generator starts up. Thankfully games get durability well wrong, the bird's durability anyways, the gunner is added to the endangered species list immediately after assignment.
