These are the boys that good musicians bow to and gather inspiration from. When I saw that you were truly being moved and recognizing, you got my sub. These brothers would hire the very best musicians to come in to work on a song. Sometimes for weeks upon weeks....one song. Then they'd bring in totally different musicians and keep recording that song until they got what they were looking for. There's never been another band like them. You see what that got them in the end, music as good as it could be. Good for you for recognizing it.

Donald Fagen was a genius in the studio. There songs have so many layers to them. His solo song I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World) is a great song too.

This band is know for their pristine studio production, the clarity even with a lot of instruments in the mix. One of the best American bands ever, hard to find a bad song in their whole catalog.

Welcome to the world and the rabbit hole that is Steely Dan. The reason you recognize the groove is because it was stolen by quite a few rappers. When you listen to Steely Dan you should use lyric videos. Even the way they came upon their name is clever. So, let's start at the top. What is a Black Cow? It's basically a root beer float using Kahlua. The adult version however uses bourbon. Rudy's (Bar and Grill) still exists here in NYC on 9th ave between 44th and 45th. Then and now it is essentially a dive bar. In the 70's 42nd St was a hub for pro's and johns, and Rudy's was often where pro's, musicians, artists, and actors would mingle. On the bar when he sees her are her remedies (alcohol and drugs), and her book of numbers, so she was more a high priced pro. The pros also strolled from 26th and 11th ave to the Javits Center on 34th and 11th Ave down to 42nd, down to 7th Ave. There were many on the east side on Greene St from Houston to Spring St as well. He is a man who was hopelessly in love with a prostitute that cannot change her ways, and his many attempts to change her have proven fruitless. This is now perhaps his goodbye to her. My favorites by them are "Kid Charlemagne", '"The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and "Doctor WU. There are more because there's really no bad Steely Dan song. Try "Peg" next and go from there.

"Black Cow." A sweet, cold ice cream drink with vodka or Kahlua ~ A New York concoction.
Usually vanilla ice cream with chocolate...and other (more sugar the better)
The "Black Cow" was/is popular with heroin addicts...when you are coming down, sugar is a serious craving. So, a "Big Black Cow" will do the trick at 4:00am.
Donald Fagen is describing seeing an ex-girlfriend coming into "Rudy's" (a popular hipster, after hours hangout in New York) "high" and ordering herself a Black Cow... He is disgusted and wants her to drink her big Black Cow and "get out'a here."

Seriously, the 70's music, believe me got music on lock...... NO other era can hang. 90% of biter bite from the 70's. Look, ya'll are missing more that you even know. 70's bands instruments, musician music blending compared to the wack studio production. Like Ice Cube said in No Vaseline. You don't come close. People got money hungry and greedy and sold the us out and gave us 2nd, 3rd cheaper sounding music so they could make more money.
The best thing for music is to bring the bands back, period. huge difference in quality no comparison.

I've never been a fan of sampling. Covering another artist's song is one thing. But to me sampling is theft of the worst kind. What it implies is that you have neither the talent to write great songs nor the reputation to pull together a group of stellar session musicians. So you're just gonna swipe it from people who are both more highly regarded and legendary than you can ever hope to be. I suppose it's supposed to be seen as a compliment, but it still feels like theft. And lazy theft at that. One more thing, react to more Steely Dan. This is one rabbit hole you don't want to climb out of any time soon.
