What about the wooden tramway to Kinglake? Bullock teams used to bring logs down to the railway at Whittlesea. Often there were disputes when empties were going up the mountain when another team of bullocks with logs were coming down not at the correct time of day. 'Right of weight' was the practical outcome though.
Remnants were still around a few decades ago but the bush fires several years back have probably destroyed anything left. Scorched to bare earth.

00:57 That is a Gang Shed. Built right next to the rail track at ground level. Track maintenence crew stored their tools and motor trolley there (like the 8W type in my avatar). Shed would have had 2 outward opening wooden doors. Trolley was rolled out of the shed. If enough crew - manhandle the trolley onto the rails. If not, a portable turntable to turn the trolley 90 degrees and roll onto the track. And ride to the part of the track to be worked on: sleeper, fishplate joiner etc. replacement.

The number looks like it's 27.10 which may be the number of miles from Flinders St Station?

+ian clough I guess it preserves it in history! Thanks mate! I spent a lot of time around the old Whittlesea line so I've come to learn were everything has gone! Yan yean might be abit harder to film, don't want to freak out the owners!
Hahaha I'm not that committed to honey!

O/K Got it !! FORGOT that the site at Yan Yean is somehow leased! = no Cam/ Trespassing! That rail corridor was never sold off from the gov after closure of the line 1959 as you probably know! Think? the land is under control of " VIC TRACK " same as a lot of other closed (but not land sold ) lines around the state There are heaps of ex railway sites leased by the gov and you are right about Mernda . At least you can access that one= no probs!

Re that number at 1.28 : I think it's the distance to Melbourne in miles chains and links - probably via North Melbourne.
This info used to get cut into the face of platforms, it's visible at lots of regional stations and about 20 metro stations including MATHS.
