DIY pro Glass window Cleaner similar to Windex

  • Today's video is how to make a simple but very professional window and surface cleaner similar to Windex. Because it does have ammonia you need to take the same precautions as you would with any ammonia cleaner and not let it get on wood or other surfaces that can be harmed by ammonia cleaners.
    It is best to spray onto your cleaning cloth or rag and then wipe if you are concerned with the spray harming other surfaces near where you are cleaning.
    Robb's DIY Pro Glass Cleaner
    add:
    1 cup (237 ml) of water
    1 ounce (30 ml) of ammonia
    4 ounces ( 118 ml) rubbing alcohol
    6 drops of dish soap
    1 drop blue dye
    QS to 32 ounces (946 ml)
    I am thinking of making a series of DIY household chemical formula videos. I have made a few chemical formula theme videos in the past and they have been popualr. Here are the few I have done in the past.

    Just ran out of Windex the other day and decided to make some per your video tonight. AMAZING! My father was a professional window washer for his entire life and consequently I have washed thousands and thousands of windows in my teen years. He used Ammonia in his water all the way up until the 90's until people started complaining of the ammonia smell in fine businesses. He switched to Joy dishsoap and it did a great job but you are soaping up the window really well and squeegeeing it off. He always talked about how much better Ammonia worked. Being the son of a professional window washer and later a professional window washer myself I didn't use Windex until I was married and have always been disappointed in it as it doesn't work great for greasy finger prints. This stuff I used tonight per your recipe is the best "Windex" I have ever used.

    Nice formula. I asked a professional window washer what he used. I'd watched him doing windows next door to one of my construction projects. For speed he used a woolen car wash type pad on an extension rod, squeegeed everything, wiped the edges with a rag, crystal clear. His formula was nearly identical to yours, his extra ingredient was a teaspoon of cornstarch to a gallon of mix as a mild abrasive. It works, but I'm gonna try yours as the combo looks like a winner.

    • @RobbsHomemadeLife
      @RobbsHomemadeLife  2 года назад +1

      Hey Murphy, thanks a lot. I have heard about the cornstarch. Also, some window washers just use Dawn liquid soap but I find it leaves a streak. However, you can't get much cheaper.

      Hey Brad, I think I am going to do more of these as they are much quicker to do than most of my other videos and fun too. Also, I might come up with something I can manufacture myself. I remember reading years ago about a guy who was the biggest supplier of auto window washing fluid for Walmart. He was the sole employee. He mixed up the water and chemicals in a big 2000 gallon tank and then spent the day filling bottles and boxes on pallets. I always dreamed of being Willy Wonka without all of the oompah Loompas. Ha!

    Tired of store bought concoctions, already have all the ingredients and you helped me with the recipe. Thank you A quick note. I used RO as our water is quite hard. Using 'pure' water would only help not hinder in providing the best quality product. I'm sure for some calcium scale isn't an issue but it's horrible here. I didn't have rubbing but lots of isopropyl 99%. I just did a x 0.7 to get the new ratio of water/alcohol. Added everything together and your recipe works wonders. Thank you again

    Can I omit the ammonia? Maybe with Vinegar instead? I don’t keep ammonia in my house because of how much bleach I use, along with never really having a need for it, I just never really bought it, it would be a waste if I got it just to make this. Please if anyone knows I would really appreciate you

      you need the ammonia for this formula, however you can also try plain vinegar.

      You used 4oz 50% rubbing alcohol, but you said 70% would have been better, if I have even stronger rubbing alcohol, eg 91%, can I reduce the quantity say 3oz instead of 4oz?

      The ammonia I used was less than 3%. here is the brand I used, I got it cheap at the dollar store but it is sold on amazon where there is more information about it. You do not have to use this brand, just use household ammonia that has no additives such as coloring agents or perfumes.. amzn.to/3fY48gZ

    The British TV show, How Clean Is Your House?, used tea to make a glass cleaner because the tonic acid (?) in the tea worked well. Do you have any recipe like that?

    • @RobbsHomemadeLife
      @RobbsHomemadeLife  2 года назад +1

      Hello Mari, thanks for watching and commenting. If you need a Tea based window or glass cleaner recipe it's very simple. Just add three regular black tea bags to 8 ounces of water hot enough to make tea. When it cools you can use it as a glass cleaner. Tea has tannic acid in it which does help cut dirt and grime. However, the formula I have in my video is better because it is much less likely to leave streaks and is much stronger. However, the tea formula is extraordinarily simple and may work perfectly for you. I will try to do a video on comparing the two in the near future. Thanks again.

      not sure how you clean but I don't leave anything 'wet'. spray the product, wipe around until dry. for a tv i'd be more concerned about a lint free cloth. I've used name brand windex products on my screen, so if I use that then using this is also 100% fine. there are more chemicals in the food you eat than in this common cleaner. Just food for thought ! @@michaelvelez9278

      32 ounce Windex Publix grocery $4.75
      rubbing alcohol Publix grocery 16 oz $2.05
      clear ammonia 64 oz 98 cents
      1 cup (237 ml) of water
      1 ounce (30 ml) of ammonia
      4 ounces ( 118 ml) rubbing alcohol
      6 drops of dish soap
      1 drop blue dye
      QS to 32 ounces (946 ml)
      If you add up the cost of the blue dye, ammonia, rubbing alcohol and dish soap your total will be more than a single container of Windex. However, if you buy those ingredients you will be able to make a 32 ounce bottle of window cleaner better than Windex for about $.59 worth of materials. Also, you don't need to add the blue dye if you don't want to.
