    Ring of fire!

    • @gosnooky
      @gosnooky 3 месяца назад

      Hawaii is in the dead center of the Pacific plate, nowhere near the Ring of Fire as California is. Hawaii's volcanoes are caused by a hot spot (magma dome) that the Pacific plate moves over. This is why the Hawaiian islands are sort of lined up, and the island of Hawaii is just where the magma dome is now in relation to the plate. Millions of years ago, the hot spot created Kauai, Oahu, Maui, then Hawaii in that order. If you look at Hawaii on Google Earth or Maps in satellite mode, you can see a chain of bumps, called sea mounts stretching from Hawaii to Russia. It's cool to see how the plate has moved over the eons - there's even a bend in the chain where the Pacific plate changed direction about 80M years ago. In the far future, Kauai will erode away into a seamount, and there will be a new "Big Island", as the island Hawaii will start to erode and shrink.

The epicenter was in Puako measured 6.9 and the north side (Kohala, Waikoloa, Honokaa) had so much damage, my house was bad shape- toilets cracked, water heater line/pipe detached from wall, everything came flying out of kitchen cabinets, garage door came off and hanging. Wow! I remember a 5.7, when I was in grammar school, in San Francisco. I THINK that it lasted about 45 seconds. "Too much, too long."
    Hoping that those in Hilo can recover, and relax.

    The Hawaii paper said the Big Island of Hawaii registered 6.3. I felt it. Now, Oahu may have registered at 5.7.

    Never been through a quake before, well except for a tremmer, that was recorded as a 2.1 if I remember right, it only lasted for maybe 3 seconds. I thought it was a truck going by, I found out later what it really was.

      5.7 is big enough to cause cracks in walls and make brick walls fall over. A 6.4 like LA in 1994 is big enough to walk houses off of their foundations and collapses all kinds of buildings.

    The number of earthquakes is increasing rapidly every year. More and more often they occur in atypical places. In 1960, there were 16,000 earthquakes; in 2011, there were 31,000; and in 2023, there were almost 400,000 (!) earthquakes in one year.

      Yep, I remember reading about the increase of earthquakes in the bible. I'm starting to believe that it's far more real than any other record of history.

      Also there were about 15,600 earthquakes in 2023, I don't know where you got the 400,000 number?
