  • Yes, there was an earlier "The Littlest Hobo" TV series before the popular 1980s version, with its own equally awesome theme song. This 1963 episode (Season 1, Episode 13) follows the adventures of the Littlest Hobo and a new vagabond tramp friend Ben Smith (played by Herb Vigran). The duo's efforts are rewarded when a team of horses which they save from being sold, are used to rescue a busload of schoolchildren. If you are into Ontario summer fair grounds, horse pulls and cheering kids, this is the episode for you, haha! A rare episode in full color, and apparently one of 3 episodes not filmed at Hollyburn Film Studios in West Vancouver.
Featuring Herb Vigran (Maverick, Bewitched, Gunsmoke), Beth Lockerbie (The Incredible Journey, Cannonball), Aileen Seaton (The Starlost, Seaway), Eric Cryderman (The Forest Rangers), Sydney Brown (Adventures in Rainbow Country, The Forest Rangers), Art Jenoff (Hudson's Bay, Cannonball) and Jennifer Ogilvie.
"This was one of 3 episodes to be filmed in the Toronto area in the summer of 1963. Most of the episode was filmed at the Toronto International Film Studio lot in Kleinburg. The river scenes were filmed in Burleigh Falls north of Peterborough, Ontario."

I watched the 1963 series when I was 11 years old and what a trip down memory lane. I watched the 1980s series with my own kids and we all had the same reaction: Hobo dog has no home, Hobo dog has no family...Wah!....Loved both series but I lean towards the earlier one because of the childhood memories it evokes for me...There was also a Littlest Hobo movie made in 1958....I don't know who sings the theme song in this episode but the original singer was Jerry Scoggins who sang the theme for the Beverly Hillbillies 'The Ballad of Jed Clampett'... I liked both theme songs but again, prefer the earlier version, blame that on the 11 year old that still dwells in this 69 year old Vancouverite's heart.... I love seeing Vancouver back in the day and recognizing actors who went on to fame and fortune after guesting on our classic Canadian program, ' The Littlest Hobo', with London, the only true star of the series. ♥

The Littlest Hobo always brought tears to my eyes back then, and still does. By the way this was an episode from 1963. Season 1, episode # 13.

For at least two years in Lassie's long-running series Lassie was like a,"littlest hobo," going from place to place and helping people out.

Lassie was a vagabond for 2 years helping people out. London did it in 2 separate series and a movie because, he's Canadian and we're always helpful. ☺

I love this grand old jazz Neil sedaka bass and piano with the original litykestbhobo on Saturday mornings at eleven on CTV. Canada was a true move for us Jamaican families know to be enthuse with pets . I'm not a doggie person but I love terriers and chuichiua, they are small but quiet in a fine way. thanks forvthe first song I love.

Man how I loved this show....
I was born in Toronto in '63 and used to watch this original series from when I was 4 and we had just moved to London Ontario
my little heart ached for the littlest hobo, I always felt so sorry for him and yearned to help him and love him up...and that theme song made your heart sad..funny how I grew up in a town with the same name as the dog who starred in the show

Though the television series of "The Littlest Hobo" was filmed in Canada (both 60's & 70's) it's obvious that the 1960's opening and closing credits were shot at a Santa Fe Railway yard in Los Angeles, California. Wonder if this was footage borrowed from the 1958 movie, "The Littlest Hobo."
