  • Remember that one time someone left out a petri dish and it got all moldy and they ended up discovering penicillin? This episode is like that, but instead Kevin turned a great idea into moldy garbage... But, in an effort at full disclosure, he explains why it's garbage and why he did what he did. Bad Kevin...
Anyways, the idea behind this episode is a Valentines Day/RomCom recommendation episode. And so, in keeping with THAT part of the episode, Kevin asked the whole APNC team, including newcomer Lauren, what their favorite RomComs are. They came in as follows:
    Andy - Say Anything
Jen and Kim - Crazy Stupid Love
    Andrew - Just Friends
    Lauren - Bridget Jones Diary
    Kevin - Failure to Launch
If you take nothing else away from this episode, please take away that these are all fun movies. Great RomComs for you to watch whether you are spending V-Day alone or with someone you love (or hate?).
Now, for the episode itself... Let's be honest, it's a mess. But Kevin owns up to that in the introduction before the introduction. That will make sense if you watch... As it stands, Kevins regular hosting partner Andrew was out, funny enough, for an early Valentines Day celebration, leaving Kevin to himself. Rather than miss a week, he decided to record an episode and even polled the crew a few days prior to recording. That's called planning!
The day of recording, he came down very under the weather and, again, so as to not miss a week of the show, he scrambled to work the episode out. In his foggy brained state, he ended up asking AI to generate the script for the podcast episode, something he has railed against as long as AI has been brought up on the show.
Now, what he asked for was a witty 30 minute episode comparing and contrasting the 5 films listed above. What he got lacked wit almost entirely, didn't compare the films at all, and wasn't even close to 30 minutes in length. Now, as if to prove his own idiocy, he decided to double down on the AI and ask for another 8 minute segment on RomCom tropes. As you may guess, that was garbage, too.
As the episode goes on, he goes more and more "off book" in attempt to save the episode, but it's pretty bad overall. So this episode serves more as a cautionary tale than anything else. AI for anything creative is just bad. Don't do it. We here at APNC apologize for what was made here this week, but Andrew should be back to save the day next time.
As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week!

It was interesting to listen to your AI script. I definitely prefer normal Kevin! Thanks for letting us listen to it. BTW I really enjoyed the video clips you played in this episode.
Side note: I use AI a lot for work (to save time) and it's true.... you need to find where it works and where it doesn't. For my comms material I have to pick pieces of it to get the tone right.
Was falling in love with Ryan Gosling AI scripted? 🤣
Other movies that popped in my head (are they romcoms, not sure!): Juno, Sliverlining playbooks, trainwreck

I love Silver Linings but it’s a hair more dramatic than most RomComs IMO. But I do love it. As for Ryan Gosling, no AI tells me who to love! It’s not my fault he’s a dreamboat.

I think you're too hard on yourself, this episode was fine! 😆 I haven't seen a few of these movies. But I did like Failure to Launch. I tend to watch action/comedy more than rom/com. But I will look up a couple of the others you listed to watch. I never saw Crazy Stupid Love and I bet I will really like it. I kind of like The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandy B, and Betty White of course. 😊

I’ve heard good things about The Proposal. I might have to check that one out!

I'll have to rewatch Just Friends lol. I just remember liking its brutal honesty, and it's usage of "I Swear" 😂
But you're right: times have changed. Ana Faris seemed to be a Britney Spears caricature too. But... I now recall I think she gets with the younger bro. Was he even 18 yet??? Cringe.

Yeah, it’s SUPER problematic but a lot of that bothered me less than the fact that I didn’t really like any of the characters. But I LOVE the actors. Ana was like a caricature of all the pop divas of the time, for sure.
