Episode 198 - The Acolyte, The Boys, IF, and a Buttload of Reality TV
This week we cover IF, the penultimate episodes of The Acolyte and The Boys, and go off on reality TV, including Claim to Fame, Love Island, Arsenio Hall, Secrets of Playboy, and Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
Ok, this episode is different for sure! Sure, it starts of relevant with Andrew. and Kevin digging into the latest episode of The Acolyte. There are some philosophical differences (and some revelations discovered post-recording) but it's an excellent discussion about what this season has been and where it's headed for the finale.
After this, the gang swings hard into game shows, reality TV, and documentaries. Lauren discusses Claim to Fame, Kevin gushes over Love Island (yet again), Andrew ta...

Its just Kevin and Lauren this week and they discuss Moulin Rouge (The Musical), Only Murders in the Building, The Iron Claw, Civil War, The Boys, and Ezra. It's a quick one this week, with Kevin focusing primarily on Atlas and Jurassic World Chaos Theory, both on Netflix. Kevin takes a pretty deep dive into Atlas this week. Here's a queation: how do you guys feel about being in the era of the never-ending franchise? We will never see the end of Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Kong/Godzilla, probably even Avatar (especially now that it's Disney). Feels like A24 is the only studio doing one-off dramas and quirky arthouse stuff now.

    • @allpopnoculture
      @allpopnoculture 11 дней назад

      I’m ok with it, as long as we get both sides of the coin. Star Wars was kept alive for years on the back of the books that are now considered Legends but are definitely being worked into the shows. Comics have been a thing for a century with THOUSANDS of issues of Superman stories, etc. I think this is the next evolution of the medium. Eventually it will end up more interactive, like video games and the metaverse and all that jazz. I think the never ending franchise works as long as there are the A24s out there to give you a counterpoint

      I'm ok with it as long as the stories are good and/or resonate / have something to say in their time. Star Trek is an example of this imo. While I for one, didn't really take to shows like Lower Decks or the latter seasons of Discovery, those shows absolutely resonated with other audiences and welcomed new people to the Star Trek fold. So I believe certain IP can be cross generational and become glue to bring people and fandom segments together. If I don't like a certain eternal IP, I ignore it. I personally wouldn't want to deprive others of something they are enjoying. Lastly, if/when a certain IP does indeed run out of steam, market forces will take care of that and it'll go away for a while. See the gap between Batman & Robin and Batman Begins, or Superman Returns and Man of Steel.

    Tell me Im wrong, I dare you, Apple TV is consistently doing the highest quality shows, sci-fi, drama, comedy, etc. They've become what Netflix and HBO once were. And here is just another example. Time Bandits is one of my favorite films, Terry Gilliam's genius, on full display.This adaptation looks wonderful. When i saw White Lotus in the subject, I thought maybe the new season was out! I think Jennifer Coolidge kind of makes the show. I was hoping the next season would still include her, going back before the 1st season with her still out on hotel excursions that go sideways. Murders at hotels that just keep following her would be amusing. I watched the 1st two House of Dragon episodes. I have the same issue with the naems though, I can't keep them straight in my head. It's started out Ok though, so I'll watch the whole season. I never head of the Bikeriders movie. I"m not totally sure if I'll watch it. I watched all of Sons, but was hating it towards the end, I was really only kept watching because I wanted everyone dead! And needed to see who got axed. They should have ended it after the first 2 seasons instead of trying to drag out a good thing because it was so popular. They werew awful people, fighting with even worse people. 😂 Jamie refused to watch after 1st season because he can't stand when the bikes don't have the right sound effects or keep getting run off the road by vans. He'd just start ranting "that just wouldn't happen!" 😆I did love Tig & Walton Goggins together though. There's a book I read called The Road To Hell, about the Hells Angels, and how the cops ended up taking them down in the late 90s here. It's crazy all the stuff that was going on.

    • @allpopnoculture
      @allpopnoculture 24 дня назад

      Yeah, I don’t remember when I fell off of Sons, but I didn’t watch it all either. Like you said, they just all became the worst versions of themselves which was the total opposite of what Jax was trying to do in the beginning. House of the Dragon is good but not great. But good enough to stick with. And I agree that Jennifer Coolidge was kind of the glue of White Lotus. I like that Belinda will be back, but we’ll see how this one plays out!

    I watched Iron Claw when it landed on streaming because I was really into WWF late 90s. Although, I didn't know much about the Von Erich family, they were kind of before I got into it. What a depressing, tragic family. They even left out one of the other brothers that had died, to streamline the movie a bit. I HATED who they cast as Ric Flair, and it took me right out of the movie when he was on screen. I don't know how he got through the audition process. Zac & Jeremy did great though and got pretty jacked. I didn't really like the movie overall though. Just so depressing with everything that happened, and how their father treated them.

      Leah!! I am so sorry for ignoring this! I swear I replied. I still haven't watched The Iron Claw and I'm not sure when I will. I don't enjoy depressing movies in most cases, even when they are well made.

      @leahcahill5840 25 дней назад

      @@allpopnoculture Yeah, I wouldn't say it's a 'must watch', unless you were really into WWF in the 80s maybe and want the back story. It's not a feel good movie that's for sure. A lot of the wrestling documentaries are pretty good, I preferred some of them, I watched a bunch of the docs on my favorite wrestlers.

    I laughed when Lauren said "I don't really care about this" for the Star Wars blah blahhing 😆I do agree though, Rogue One is the best of all of them. So, I think that could easily just be watched on its own, without really knowing too much back story. It would probably still be good for someone that isn't really into the whole universe. I've seen all the Star Wars movies and shows, but I'm kind of bad at the details, I get confused with the timelines and the what/when/where of it all. I did like the Kenobi tv series though, because I like Ewan & the kid they got to play Leia was great.

    • @allpopnoculture

      Totally agree about Kenobi. I loved the series and that little girl was fantastic. I think Rogue One is the perfect Star Wars movie for exactly what you said. There is no barrier to entry on it. You can know nothing and just watch a good espionage flick with sci fi elements

      I don’t think BHC looks bad, but it looks pretty by the numbers. We’ve seen it so many times. I haven’t seen Eddie be great in a while either. But I’ll watch it, especially since it’s loading on Netflix. Beetlejuice looks like a solid sequel, with regards to the original. It looks a little over the top, but that’s kinda the point

    • @BASS_the_3rd
      @BASS_the_3rd Месяц назад

      @allpopnoculture Sure, I'll watch it, but I expect nothing from it. Throwback/call back humor, some CGI-assisted action/destruction sequences, the usual. Murphy has to be mid 60's? Reinhold, too, the bald guy has to be in his 80s, at least. There was, to a certain degree, believability in the first film. But I have a hard time believing that my ability to suspend willing disbelief may be a bridge too far for this mind. As for Beetlejuice, I thought they could have at least updated Winona's look. But it looks and more importantly, felt like the original. The question is... secret cameo for Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis?

    Unfrosted was just OK. It was kind of like a longer seinfeld episode. Kind of chaos, and weird. But I love Melissa McCarthy. The best line from the movie also works as a review: "it's slightly better than garbage" and then Amy Schumer mumbles "like grape nuts" for some reason that line made me crack up cause my parents always bought grape nuts, and grape nut ice-cream when I was a kid. I wish he'd do more comedians in cars episodes, I've rewatched all of them multiple times 😆

    Can I go off topic? I've been a Star Trek fan for as long as I can remember. I began watching the rerun TOS episodes with my dad, possibly before I can remember. Over the years, the franchise has had its ups and downs, with both TV and films being delivered to varying degrees of quality. The high of Wrath of Khan along with the lows of Insurrection. The quality of TNG and the lower rung of Enterprise. Such is life. One of the most recent, Discovery, is nearing its end with the 2nd half of its final season airing currently. While this was never the cream of the crop of the more recent ST efforts, this show failed for one simple reason: no one wants to sit through a 5 season long therapy session. This show is way too internalized to be a ST show. First, it starts out as Burnam having issues with daddy and her brother, then it's the Klingon guy, then her mother, then Booker. Also, you've got Stametz and Culber who have possibly the worst chemistry for an on screen couple. Blu and Tol, Saru and the Vulcan admin woman. In each of these relationships, it's all whining and overly dramatic issues that are blown far out of proportion. All of this was exasperated by the "Burn" season. An entire season about the pandemic, where the season seemed to last longer than the actual real-world illness. We were living the pandemic, and I didn't want to be forced to fed it by my entertainment as well. Adventures are about escapism, that feeling of being taken far off to a different place or far away time, not to be reminded of the hell that is reality. They also canceled ST Lower Decks, there was some truly funny shit on there. Almost like the Family Guy version of ST.

      Yeah, I enjoyed the first season of Discovery but it lost me after that. I do want to go back and watch because I don’t think it’s “bad” it’s just not as good as it could have been. I was crazy bummed about lower decks, though. That show was brilliant and the SNW crossover was great. I’ve been a Trek fan as long as I can remember. I watched TOS so many tons as a kid and I loved Khan and Voyage Home.

    I feel that you guys missed the big point of invincible. Mark, Mark has been holding back so much this whole time and now that he's killed someone he will find the strength to unleash his full power next time he fights the Viltramites. Also, Eve has been holding back as we saw in her solo. she is very powerful, and if she fully unleashes, she could probably destroy the world.

    • @allpopnoculture
      @allpopnoculture 2 месяца назад

      Definitely not disagreeing with you on Mark.But I do wonder just how powerful he really can be since he's only half Viltramite. Also, will he spiral for a while over what he's done or accept that he can do this horrible thing when needed. It'll be a great story going forward. And I do agree on Eve. She reminds me of a Scarlet Witch Lite. She has a lot of growth coming, too.

    Rebel Moon 2...........wait, someone actually watched this whole thing? This clunky, boring, soulless catastrophe? I'm not even sure that I have words for this "film". This was supposed to be a Star Wars story. Can you imagine? This would actually have been worse than the Book of Boba Fett. And that is truly saying something. This whole Zack Snyder is making the same film over and over again has gotten stale. Sam shot setups, same sepia tone color correction, same dull characters, and same overused slo-mo effects every damn time. These kinds of films exist for me on a level akin to F&F and franchises like The Expendables, and other Jason Statham properties. Made by an egotistical guy who thinks he's an auteur. If Rebel Moon were a person it would be an alpha bro driving a jacked-up truck, wearing tactical sunglasses, blasting any song by Skynard while screaming "guns, yeah, 'Murica" out the windows. Which is to say cliché, uninteresting and far too overdone.

We used to harmonize the acapella of Shai's jam 'If I ever fall in love'. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was you.

    3BP was a well-done adaptation. Changes from the source materiel, but most of them are understandable, and none of them were egregious enough to destroy the story, in my opinion. For anyone who has yet to read the books, I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys reading. Including the 4th book, The Redemption of Time. Written not by the trilogy author, but with the original author's blessing. A book that, to me, has some similarities to Arthur C. Clarke's 3001: The Final Odyssey.

    Damsel is the sloggiest, most trope-filled, derivative snoozefest that Netflix has done since that Zack Snyder abomination. It's boring, poorly written, badly acted, middling at best special effects. Millie Bobby Brown is in dire need of a real role. This Enola Holmes, Stranger Things, Damsel pigeon hole she is in is going to end her career real quick. Netflix as a whole is dying when it comes to quality. If they fuck up The Three Body Problem, I'm gonna be pissed.

    • @allpopnoculture

      I'm really glad I'm going into 3BP blind. I know it's an epic, but I don't know the source material, so I'm hoping that works in my favor. As for MBB, I'm not entirely sure she's a truly great actress. I worry that Stranger Things may have been a perfect fit for her at the time but she just may not have the chops to broaden her career.

    • @BASS_the_3rd
      @BASS_the_3rd 4 месяца назад

      @allpopnoculture I think that at this point, we've all seen so many adaptations that veer wildly from the source material, I'm not even sure that's a useful metric anymore to measure the entertainment value of a property. For example, Foundation on Apple+ is only like its source in that the very broad story is still there, as are places and character names (though genders have changed). Yet I still enjoy the show for its quality performances and production value. However, conversely, I think Amazon's TROP is awful, I don't care for the changes they made to the lore at all. Perhaps those viewpoints depend on how sentimental I am about the source material. When it comes to 3BP, I'm not as tied to it as it is a newer story, but the books were very good, I'm just hoping Weiss and Benioff don't get "overly creative" with the storytelling.

      @allpopnoculture it won't be a problem in the same way this time around. I'm assuming the Netflix show will cover the entire first book. So, at most I could see this being a 3 to 4 season show if they want to do the book quadrilogy. They wouldn't be under the same stress or fatigue as they were with GoT after nearly a decade. I get the joke and it was well played. I just think the two situations are too dissimilar to repeat the same issues.

As soon as I finished Squid Games, I googles "shows like" and that's how I found it a couple years ago. I remember liking it well enough. I agree maybe Squid Games is a bit better, but I think I'll go watch at least the next episode and see if it hooks me back in. I haven't watched Fleabag, so I might check that out as well. A24: You guys, honestly, we're just so happy to be here. Coffee, anyone? WB/Discovery: (sobbing) We try! I swear we try, but our movies aren't doing well. People constantly say we make the worst comic-related films! Sony: Yo, got you, son. Hold my beer. A couple of years later, at the same meeting... Disney: OK, let's get back to Star Wars. Amazon: We've got more Tolkien stuff coming! Seriously, are you guys ignoring me? A24: Oh, you're not supposed to bring the Oscar to the meeting? Our bad. WB/Discovery: We give up, and they don't even like the 4 hour versions. Sony: We'd like to apologize to you guys. Uhm, we might have just killed the whole super-hero movie, thingy. So, uh, sorry. That's the Godzilla franchise. Not very good films with a spin-off that doesn't raise the bar much." I'm sure this is caused by the Toho people or whomever runs the Godzilla stuff. I really liked Echo a lot!! She does kick ass, and I'm so glad it all dropped at once so I could binge it. Also, side note, Graham Greene, who plays her grandfather is Canadian, I recognized him right away. I hadn't heard anything really about the new Mean Girls, so that's interesting. I love the original, & watch it all the time. So I' wasn't sure I'd want to see any kind of remake of it, but I might check out the movie now if I see it pop up somewhere. As far as Deadpool goes, note to Jen, probably avoid your youngest watching it for sure. It's more violent, but the funny/sarcastic attitude is pretty amusing. He's hilarious. Although there's no real nudity during any sex scenes, you do see Ryan's bits & pieces for a min when he wakes up in a warehouse and is running naked & fighting someone. I don't remember nudity in 2nd one, but I think it might have a PG version out there too. My friend wants me to watch Slow Horses, I haven't started it yet though! One Piece I loved too! @@allpopnoculture there was just so much more storytelling to be done. Yes the civil war is happening in the city but I wanted to see how it played out between the two families in the bunker. Is Ruth correct that GH’s niceness will end up getting them killed? Will Julia Roberts character revert back to her racist, elitest, selfish self, or does she now view GH and Ruth as part of her family that needs to be protected (like she did with the deer)? Has she truly changed? What is going to happen to the son and his teeth? Why are the animals behaving so weirdly? It’s seriously like they just got tired of writing the movie and gave up.

      @arismolen9478 7 месяцев назад

      So you think Julia Roberts has truly changed? I felt like between Ruth’s comment about trusting white people getting them killed in the end, they were setting up Julia Roberts to eventually backstab them. And to me shutting them out of the bunker would have done it without requiring the extra two hours you mentioned. I guess I just didn’t buy that Julia was such a changed woman now that in the end she still wouldn’t screw them over “for her family”. Just seemed like a missed opportunity to me. But also, I didn’t know this was a book first. Though I can’t say this movie makes me want to read it now.

    I was kind of wondering why they didn't push the release date for Marvels out a bit to give them a chance to talk & promote it. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I'll probably like it. (though, I am not a cat person, so cats & singing sound odd 😆) Side note - Iman & Teyonah were just on the View talking about Marvels. And Teyonah has a new Christmas movie coming out soon with Ludacris. So, I'm excited for that one now😀 I loved Loki! It was great, he was trying so hard to fix everything, and fails over & over. Then to realize he finally has friends he wants to protect and find his purpose. It was a nice end to the series. I looked at it as the end to Loki as a character. I'm sure down the road they could figure out how to make him cameo in things if they wanted, but I think his journey is over. And I hope they leave it alone. I feel like Andrew went into Loki the way I went into Wanda vision. There was so much hype, it kind of ruined it for me. I was late to the Wanda party, so it was already all out when I finally started it and I had a hard time getting into the first few episodes, it was a let down. I should re-watch it. I've only ever watched it once. With Loki I watched episodes asap before I could see anythign online about it. I wanted to be a blank slate.

      All I really care about is that they give it an ending. If it’s 2 or 10 seasons, I just want it to not be a cliff hanger

    And the people that don’t like him like you would hate it no matter what. The black guy seemed for leveled in criticizing Zack but the other dude was quite literally upset for what? Like you don’t have to watch the movie. You can’t even keep a level head talking about his movie. Do better.

      I definitely don’t hate Snyder. Watchmen, 300, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel, Army of the Dead? I enjoy these films. The last few have been style over substance and I’ll stand behind that. But I’ve never heard a bad word about Zack and don’t dislike him one bit.

      @@allpopnoculture style over substance is pretentious Criticism. Sometimes the style lends itself to the substance. It’s only style over substance when you take the style at face value. You were fuming over slow motion, visibly upset over a filmmaker. Why even bother? I don’t watch movies of directors I don’t like or don’t appreciate their movies cos I know I’ll be biased and wouldn’t give it a a fair chance.

      Again, I like Snyder and some of his movies. But his Justice League Directors Cut was almost 10% show motion, so seeing more of it in a trailer frustrates me. I’ll still watch this and hope for the best, but he’s not giving me warm and fuzzies. But I hope he proves me wrong. I love being wrong in situations like this!

    The flash was my favorite part of Justice league, not that that says a WHOLE lot seeing that I did not enjoy that either...but alas. All of his positive, funny qualities were stripped of the character in this movie and you were left with a twitchy, neurotic and annoying main character. I hated the blatant ripoff of the marvel multiverse and variants, I didnt uderstand skipping Robert Pattinsons batman...? I didnt see the film but it was weird to just skip the most recent version of batman. The special fx were so distracting and terrible, I just couldnt get behind it and honestly couldn't believe that was what we were left with, knowing the movie had such a large budget. Supergirls' character was so flat, angry and not likable I was disappointed that she the big saving grace in the film. I refused to give the flash any money in its theatrical stint or to rent it but I honestly DID want to like it. I wanted to finish it saying I don't like Ezra Miller, I think its crazy they still released this after all the controversy BUT ALL IN ALL IT WAS A GOOD MOVIE, and I just couldn't say that. He went back, and ends up losing his mother but at the end, batman was still a variant and.....you're just left confused. And agreed that the end credit scene with aquaman was dumb and Im so glad I watched it at home where I could fast forward to it and not waste an additional 10 minutes of my life to be left with that nonsense. I wish I could say I at least thought it was OK! It was so shockingly bad and I cant believe they were so hell bent on releasing it after everything. Very very disappointing film in my opinion.

      I feel all of this in my soul. I don’t disagree with any of it, though i I think I liked Supergirl more than you did. But otherwise this movie just makes me wish Aquaman 2 was shelved and we could just move on!
