Thank you for these videos, I just had my Tib/Fib surgery 5 weeks ago due to a motorcycle accident (was not at fault). Pre-injury I was living a very active lifestyle, Muay Thai twice a week, Jiu Jitsu twice a week, plus running and hitting the gym. It's been really tough giving all that up (for now) especially dreams of competing and teaching in those disciplines this year. These videos and comments from others have been really helpful, thanks for sharing your story, wishing you and all the viewers a safe, successful and happy recovery.

Hi I am 5 months post injury and I am back at training doing mostly teaching and for jiu jitsu I play chess. I make a move, they make a move etc until one person gets the tap. Is so much fun and I find I’m still learning heaps and can protect my leg. Oh and of course drilling what I can.

How are you doing? 2 huge dogs slammed into my back at the local dog park. I broke my ankle/tib/fib, had a reduction and surgery that afternoon. I'm in a soft cast until I see the ortho on the 23rd. Its so effing depressing. We were supposed to go to Australia this coming Monday and had to cancel that. I think that is the worst part, other than being stuck in the house.

I completely relate to, agree with and appreciate this comment. These videos have given me a boost much needed. I was t-boned while motorcycling, tibfib break/shatter, major toe bone splintered and major toe lacerations-like, imagine having webbed toes and wheee the webbing joins the major and second toe. Anyway, I was worried that I was healing too slowly, not much bone growth after 14 weeks. However, these videos and comments makes me feel less alone and more receptive to credit the process. Gracias!

Speaking from the UK. In May, 23 a man in a mobility scooter rammed into me and fractured my tibia. Had surgery with plate and 9 screws. I could relate to everything you mentioned in this video I too feel so grateful for the skill of the surgeon and the fact that I can now put one foot in front of the other again. I also had a wonderful physiotherapist and have religiously adhered to the exercise regime. I am a hiker and have had a few hikes lately, walking around 6.5 miles which is less than I used to do, but gradually building it up. I do make sure to rest the next day as my leg reminds me that I am still in recovery mode. My best to everyone who is going through this and similar. Just work hard at what you are supposed to do and get good nutrition inside you.

Hey Zack, I had a spiral tib and a twin fib break in an off road motorcycle accident about 10 weeks ago. I’ve got a rod and 5 screws holding my lower leg together. I really appreciate your videos and sharing your experience and especially, your PT and self-designed home exercises - which is what brought me to RUclips in the first place (seeking ways to accelerate my healing with exercises). So, again - thank you and keep up the good work with your videos.

Law enforcement officer here. A couple weeks ago I had a guy resisting arrest, during the altercation I broke my fibula. Pretty clean break. Didn’t know that at the time thought I rolled my ankle.
Anyways, I had one week before surgery and that was miserably painful. They had me on weak hydrocodone. The thought of my bone moving around that week sickened me.
Then 7 days later I had a successful surgery. They gave me oxycodone this time. They put a plate in and some screws.
It’s been over one week since surgery. The pain has gotten better since the swelling has went down. I go Thursday to have the cast taken off and a boot.
Dude the worst part after surgery has been numb to tingly toes. Where I can’t move my foot around lol wearing me out.
So yeah dude, two weeks ago I had a good break, I’m on workers comp at the moment and happy to be healing.

I had slowly gone down like you and once I got off at 6 weeks I experienced withdrawal symptoms. I figured that out via an internet search and thought I had covid and a mental breakdown. Fortunately that didn't last long. Here's the warning: don't listen to the voice in your head that says that you could just take one more pill to get through it. Scary. Last June I was in Monticello, UT for my first race of the new season. I race off-road circuits. Kinda cross-country/enduro. During my practice session the day before the race I came up short on a double and cased it. Like you I tried to stand up -twice- but collapsed. I was taken to ER at the small town that revealed the break. I was soon air-lifted to Grand Junction, CO to St. Mary's, Level 1 trauma center. Got the external fixator, then a day and a half later (they set me up in a super nice room!) I received the first surgery, a day later the second. They had to let swelling go down a bit. I had almost the exact plate configuration as you, but another smaller one at the back of the Tib. 4 total. Friends in Telluride picked me up and I stayed with them a week. Did everything as directed, did my two months of P/T and as I was nearing the end of P/T I began to experience paiins that I thought should not be. They were to the point that I had to go back to crutches as it was crippling. I was doing my followup where I live, 12 hrs from St. Mary's. I requested X-Rays and these revealed broken plates and screws and slightly mal-aligned bones. This was the the cause of the pain. Things were going so well too. I suspect that my followup ortho folks mis-read my X-Rays and got me working too hard, too soon in P/T. Oh well... Next day I went to Banner Medical (U of A) in Tucson, AZ for a full evaluation and had surgery -again- Dec. 14. Old hardware was removed, bones re-aligned and new hardware installed. Fortunately this recovery is not as bad since I did not have the initial "crash" trauma that produced a bunch of swelling, bruising, etc., etc. I also have had my range of motion from the P/T, so that's good. It's been 10 weeks now and I go back in two more weeks. If images reveal what they want, they plan to have me start walking. I'm an athlete and man this has been a major life changer. With the exception of a little help from friends (I'm often too proud to ask...) I've also been doing this by myself. I've been getting as much exercise as I can without weight bearing the right leg. I too have a Knee Rover, but I bought the off-road version, go figure right! Also an Iwalk knee crutch, without this I would be screwed. I've been riding and racing motorcycles and bicycles since age 12 and don't plan on quitting. I'm also an experienced rock climber, and snowboard instructor. I came across your story today while looking for Tib/Fib healing information. Crazy that you had the nearly same break, plates and also in Utah! Cheers!

The key to pain management is staying ahead of the pain. If you wait until the pain sets in prior to taking your next pain medication, you’ve waited too long. Playing catch up is extremely difficult. Learned this from my brother in law who is an anesthesiologist. I’m 6 weeks post tib / fib surgery today. The pain was brutal for about the first 2 weeks post surgery. My surgery included the nail in the tibia with screws at the top and bottom. Since the fibula is a non weight bearing bone, it was untouched after the initial setting and alignment. I was walking right away. Doing lots of PT, trying to increase dorsi and plantar flexion. The only thing that really hurts is my fibula when walking. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I recently had a rod inserted in my tibia and let me tell you after two weeks I could already lift my leg Parallel when I’m laying down. The issues right now for me would be the pressure distribution when I stand up in crutches. In the beginning it was painful but now every morning I would get up and wait a couple of minutes for my leg to get used to it and basically it would hurt less. Right now my ankle and knee is swollen so I can’t really bend them . I also have stitches on both sides of the leg from top ankle to almost the top of my knee . It was done to reduce swelling after surgery. Right now there’s a tender spot on part of the stitching that releases discharge and now I’m waiting for my doctor appointment. Hopefully there’s no infection so there can be no delay in the healing process. It was really painful but I think the whole psychological part of it is worse. Keep you head occupied and eat healthy. I’m only 2 weeks in and I gotta say it feels like eternity.

I'm the same as Kim (above)... My ladder accident was 4/12/2021... Initial external device for 2 weeks, then plates on fib/tib. Ready to go back to work in October but then got an infection. Tibia plate removal and 6 weeks of antibiotics and picc line.. Then back to work 1/1/2022. Follow up xray 1/30/22 and ortho doc said the bone didn't heal right somehow. So 4 days ago I had the rod put in my tibia. A bit painful for 2 days but very controllable for me with Motrin. So now waiting another 1.5 weeks to start with a little weight on it. So it's been a 1 year ordeal for me (so far). I'm glad people are mentioning the psychological impact of the injury. It happens to me as well. But I push thru and try to keep occupied. I know there will be a recovery and the body just needs time to heal. I really liked Zacks video with the PT recommendations. I've never done any except to just walk. I was surprised by the swelling never going down. Doc didn't say it was abnormal but after getting back to walking 8-10,000 steps a day after 1/1/2022 I'm surprised it didn't go down. So that is my biggest concern I guess. I hope he did his PT video and will be looking for it. Good luck everyone.

Thanks so much for sharing - you made it sound like it was so manageable going through your recovery journey, which is great help and encouragement to me after I broke my tibia bone (also on a ski slope!) just before Christmas Day over 3 months ago. Been through a lot of the physical and mental challenges you mentioned, currently (at 14 weeks post ORIF surgery) at the stage of going between on crutches and off crutches, sometimes feeling fine walking/limping from one point to another, sometimes feeling some pain along with the still slightly swollen and bruised right leg. Just wanted to know at which point did you start to walk/swift stable walk without pain, and when can you walk with some stress challenges (like walking up hills/slopes/trails etc)?

Everything you report is similar to my experience. Especially the emotional part. If it weren’t for people like you on you tube I think I would have slit my throat. Scared and lonely and vulnerable. Where I am there is no physio and the hospital beyond the surgery and X Rays had nothing else to offer. I want to know if you had intense pain in the areas adjacent to the Achilles’ tendon or anywhere else and if so how did you deal with it. Do you still have significant inflammation?

Just fractured my Fibula in two places on the weekend ( roller skate accident )
I went into shock from the adrenaline which was a very interesting experience. Thankfully the adrenaline numbed the pain at the time, but sadly I'm in so much pain now and I haven't slept properly since it happened. I have a Codeine prescription although I don't feel that the Codeine is really helping reduce the pain, hopefully this stage of the process won't last too long.
I can bare some weight on my right side, hence why i'm not in a cast and I have a boot and crutches, but it's very painful to walk or even to sit/ lay in any position. The realisation of lack of freedom and immobility for a little while is just as uncomfortable to sit with than the pain itself…. I am trying to keep a positive mindset - maybe this will give me a chance to slow down, and gain a deeper understanding of the process/ emotions around injury and recovery and how to learn to walk again. Im meant to be starting a new job in 2 weeks at a stroke service so I feel this experience is actually very valuable for me to have, although no doubt I'll probably not be starting in 2 weeks! Thank you for the video, particularly the rehabilitation exercises

As of today my right foot is 90% healed I can wear footwear now ect but my left foot is so weak, I have really bad days and think it isn't going to get any easier. Did you have a lot of swelling around the ankle post surgery? I had 3 incisions to install the hardware. Like yours they have healed really well its just the swelling! I’m just about 6 months since my broken Fibula and Tibia I suffered back on July 16th during football practice, I got surgey to next morning because apparently it was really serious ( I never looked at my leg when I broke it ) just remember it being numb and my coach and teammates seeing it sideways, I used a wheelchair for 2 months because I wasn’t allowed to put any sort of weight, and then moved to crutches with no weight for about 3 weeks before being able to put down weight and to now where I’m nearing the end of PT and apparently recovering faster than most people ( idk if it has to do with being younger at 16 ) I even was discovered to have super dense bones which is the exact opposite of osteoporosis called osteopetrosis which has the same effects as the other just one means more dense and the other that I have means less dense, sadly no more football but now I’ll be full time in the gym and able to focus on my future.

I had a fibula plate installed about 2 1/2 months ago. Fortunately pain wasn't bad and I attribute that to the fact that my ankle joint wasn't damaged and the surgeon didn't have to drill a hole in the Tibia to suture it to the Fibula. IDK. The swelling has been very frustrating. At least I could drag the canoe out and get some exercise the first week out of the support boot. The more I walk, the less swelling but it's in very small increments so it's a slow go. I have just started hiking about an hour but I feel it after. Also got back on the bicycle for short 5 mile rides. I have declined PT but if the swelling persists I might try some. I figure walking on unlevel ground is about the best thing for it.
Agree, a knee scooter is a must. It's cool too in the grocery store because you can blow the doors of the slow walkers. LOL

Thanks, I had about the same exact break, and I'm into golf which is proving to be a challenge still at the 6 month point. I broke my tib/fib 9/2/21 so I am about at the 6 month point. I'd love to learn some more about the daily routine you mentioned as I did not have the benefit of formal rehab (doc/surgeon just gave me a band and a couple exercises to help reduce loss of range of motion). 6 months after I still get a lot of swelling and am hesitant to go 100% on the golf swing repeatedly since it requires a pretty intense and dynamic push off the broken leg (lead or left leg for a right-handed golfer). I would also love to hear any tips you have regarding stretches and anything else that might speed my recovery and help improve my range of motion and healing this far after the break. Thanks.

2 weeks ago I was attacked by a group of people while I was out taking pictures one evening. They broke my tib and fib, I had to have surgery on my leg to have it set. The pain at first wasn’t so bad, but after the surgery the pain is constant and seems to be worse during the nights. I barely sleep, because there’s a really bad restless feeling in my leg and makes it hard to even lay down with my leg elevated. This is by far the worst experience I’ve ever had to endure. And I’ve been through many different horrible experiences in my life, I’ve been stabbed, shot, broke many different bones but this is worse than any other experience. The only physiotherapy I’ve had help with was the 3 days after my surgery I spent in the hospital. They showed me how to use the walker one day, the second was to see if I could stand with my foot completely flat, and the third day was to train me to use crutches by going up and down the hallway of the hospital and to use the stairs. Then shortly after the third physiotherapy session, they discharged me from the hospital a couple hours after learning how to use the crutches. And they just gave me a prescription for enough pain meds to last me a week. I currently live about 2 and a half hours north of my nearest hospital and don’t have a reliable way of getting to and from appointments. I have my post-op appointment tomorrow and hopefully it goes well and they let me know if I can get any extra help with my physiotherapy because all they gave me was a sheet of paper with different stretches and exercises I can do myself, but I think I’d do better with someone there to help me and support me throughout the whole physiotherapy. I really hope I can heal fast because I have two children and a girlfriend to provide for so I really need to get back to work as soon as possible.
Thank you for posting this video. It has given me hope and some comfort for what is to come.👍😁

5 weeks ago during vacation, I had a fracture near my ankle (some corner of a bone), tibia, and joint. I had surgery not in my city and their doctor didn't add a cast to my ankle, just said to do exercise. I tried to do exercise, but it was so swollen, that was very hard and all my ankle, and feet tendons become very stiff and my feet was in wrong position. 2weeks after surgery i was told to go back to the doctor, but i went to my city hospital. When the doctor saw my leg he was surprised how feet is not in cast, then when saw x ray, was surprised, how much pins are in the tibia and knee, he show me and omg, so many. When the nurse saw how was sewn, she was shocked and she had a hard time removing the stitches, it was very painful and bloody. Nurse with few decades work experience and she saw that stitching just few times.
Now i'm scared of the future, how will be recovered my ankle and other parts. i try to do some exercises, but it looks like no result. I managed to fix a little bit it's position, but still no 90-degree angle. Until now i never understand how is hard when one leg is all in cast, you can't do anything at all, can't sit in a smaller or very low car... just fully depend on others.

My cast is now off and I’m not into a moon boot as they call it in the uk, I’m just wondering zack how long was your ankle stiff for I’m trying to put weight through my leg without the boot as I’m worried my mobility won’t come back. Also did your foot swell when you started putting weight into it?

Hey Zack, wonder how your leg is doing now? I’m about 8 months from broken tib/fib, had a plate in and like 10 screws, I can walk (just not for like miles), ankle hurts after awhile and what’s wierd is my knee on broken side wants to turn outward naturally, my knee has been giving out on me couple times a day. I mean I’m doing great, just the brain fog/inability to focus is hard, have you had any similar issues?

Hey thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience. It took me a year to walk normally and am still working on jogging. I don’t have any specific knee issues, but I’m not a great example because foot, ankle, knee and hip stability has been a training priority of mine for years.

The knee scooter definitely isn't an option here..😕 On the right leg, Tib, fib, 5 ankle breaks, 5 knee breaks, 3 metatarsals. Left leg, 1 knee break, 2 ankle breaks. Right thumb and a right rib.. 20 broken bones. It sucks when your "good" leg has 3 broken bones..

My right ankle and the fibular bone attached were severely displaced. It's been 2months now. I got wires drilled into the fibula and also the ankle. Please post a video on the strengthening exercises.. That would really help.
I hope you 've recovered fully.

i broke my fib/tib 6 weeks ago fell down when walking on the street (softly) one bone has two fracture the other have one. I've had a surgery 4 days after the fall. They have placed one 34 cm. nail and i have around 5 screws. I went through sleepless nights, excurutiating pain for at least 3 weeks. Now the pain is bearable (nopainkillers) but the stiffness around my foot and ankle is very unconfortable after 5 weeks. Stiches and cast was removed after 2,5weeks. I now only wrap a bandage occasionally and had my second physio session last 2 weeks. I was in holiday in Turkey when i had the injury and i still am in Turkey. Basically stuck. I origionally live in london. I feel terrible, i am stuck here. :( I have no idea when i am going to be able to walk again. I will have the second x-ray in 3 weeks, then my doc said he will allow me to put pressure on that foot.

Thank you for this video Zack. I am 6 weeks in on my Tib/Fib Fracture (right side). The constant swelling inside the cast is what really bugs me. I go back in tomorrow to see the doctor and get x-rays. Hoping I can get into an air boot and get this dam cast off. I just want to know when I can start walking again. I have so much stuff I need to do and I feel so helpless. I have to rely on others to help me with basic things around the house and give me rides to work etc., which i hate, because I been so independent my whole life. I have knee scooter and iwalk but I am limited in where i can go with those. Will I be able to walk right away with the air boot on or will i still have to continue using the iwalk and knee scooter?
