well EXPERIENCED van lifers can make systems that when you take a shit it just dumps out the side just make sure to not go in the area it dumps in when you go camping xd just park it on an edge

I put two simple toggles on the hot line line of my 1960 bel-air and watched some latinos in Miami trying steal it...was hilarious. Two toggles for 1 dollar each are bullet proof
So cheap to do. Some shrink tape wire and one or two switches. One hidden coil power switch...these days injector kill switch. Well hidden it's sweet

Only did a trip for 3 weeks with my partner and child, we stay in motels Airbnbs and I would never do it again. I need time away from them. Planning van trips only with my dog.

I think my perfect situation will be to have a home base somewhere I love and a van for week long trips to where I want to visit. Retirement dreams!
@Christian...that is what we are doing as we prepare for our essentialist retirement next year...I will finish my Swedish Death Cleaning of our modest house, refine the small van conversion, create enough money, live in our big backyard, stay home when the weather dictates, and do some overseas travel.

My perfect situation is to quit my job (retire), sell my house , completely pay off the van, hit the road and do anything i want.

Not me, my perfect is in Alaska. I own the property and am in the process of building... even have a boat up there being stored inside when I’m in lower 48 or abroad for work. My travels will be for at least a year at a time. My plan is to first travel all of South & Central America, then back up and hit what I haven’t already seen of the U.S. and Canada. Then after 3 to six months chillaxing in the cabin, I plan on going to Asia and working my way around there, possibly in a van I build out when I get there (or one of those little busses they have there, those things rock). After another stop back at the cabin I will make a final trip to Europe, and see the countries I haven’t been to yet... which is mostly Eastern Europe...

For some reason i don’t think that “someone who really likes to shop at the mall” will be looking into vanlife too seriously
I don't know about where you live but here more and more larger town's and city's the supermarkets, butchers and fruit and veg shop's are inside the shopping centres (mall's) and you have to go into the carparks he's talking about or park a good distance away... many of our grey nomads are choosing to stop at smaller towns to do their shopping because of it - which is great for those smaller towns.

@@o.o9709 No. There are plenty of people that "like" shopping at malls (or shopping centres, because they can go to several different types of shop's in one central place rather than driving to this part of town for one thing then another for something else but because shopping centres don't "cater" for taller or longer vehicles they have to shop elsewhere. I have met some lovely older people (and younger 25-35yr olds) that travel in converted sprinters and alike that would like to be able to get everything they need in one central location. For many of the older people it's because they either can't walk as far anymore or carry or push a trolley as far anymore. They end up shopping in smaller town's which is great for the smaller town's but some don't even bother stopping in the bigger town's/cities and just drive straight through and some of those town's and cities have great places to visit too (besides the shopping centres).

TR is right. If they were to talk about how they protect themselves while live in their lifestyle they would never be safe again. That's like going on RUclips and telling people where you hide your spare key at LOL Some things you just can't talk about. Even if they named several deterrences they are still putting themselves in a very bad situation.
I know I'm coming in way late, but just to mention my solution for #7: "Earplugs are a campers best friend!" Ifirst learned this when I was tent camping, but they helped me many times has I camped my way across the United States in my van last spring.sleep masks are pretty great, too, if you are sleeping in a brightly-lit parking lot.

Thank you for being upfront about the rather unglamorous and troublesome side of van life which one needs to be able to adapt to as well as I am considering this option and need to digest these facts first.
Put a GPS tracking device somewhere in the van in case it's ever stolen.
Don't van dwellers include some extra security system to prevent the van being driven away? Personally I would never leave vital stuff like cards or phone in the van.

Get a high decibal alarm system with a remote camera that can see inside and outside the vehicle like the 360 cameras. A remote intercom is also useful. When your house is on wheels security is a must. I think this is routinely overlooked.
@@ITech2005 A guy I follow has a camera system that allows him to watch the outside of his RV. One time a woman was trying to steal something and just about had a heart attack when he caught her in the act.

Fake News, everbody knows that in a composting toilet your poop will magically go away! You dont have to empty it, also grey water is an invention of the media! Nobody ever in an RV hat do empty their grey water tanks or think about where your "shower" will go. ;)

Be honest with ur solutions to the down sides. Tell them about ear plugs to combat noise. Rain: U can install vent covers over your vents to still let in air without getting rain in. We love da rain!!!!
I would add a #10 to this excellent list -- stuff.
Any van is going to be short of space to store your stuff. First you need to make a lot of hard decisions on what you can live without. Second, ideally you will have a place for everything and everything in its place, but that isn't reality. You need to be ingenious about how to stow things, and diligent in continuously putting them back where they belong, it is as constant as sweeping and wiping.
Ha Ha Ha ! love the honesty, There has been for many years the bucket & chucket brigade out there both for Vanners & distance drivers, getting to the nitty gritty us guys can pee on the nearside wheel in near privacy & the secret with a porta-potty is try not to do No2 in it & yes a bucket with a poly bag liner is the best way. Pets ! whilst nice to have them if you aim for a spotless van its time to rethink. Parking its best to stay away from large citys , underfloor water tanks helps a lot plus normal carry on cans, When I was doing this way of life I tryed to use a camp site once a week for a single night that way you have water/potty disposal/showers ect . So when you build your van make the capacity to last a week on the basics of life this makes life that little bit easier.

Crashing the van - and stealing are my big struggles... so stressfull. My van is nice and clean...it is the neatest living place. My house next to it is a jungle😂😂😂

Before I went on a two-month road trip, I did a lot of research on living out of your car, and NO ONE prepared me for how hard bathroom and water stuff would be. I didn't even have a water jug with me when I left home, I hadn't even thought of it. Which is dumb, I know, but seriously, none of the stuff I researched mentioned how much water you go through and how hard it is to find places to fill up. Thanks for your honesty!

Yes. Water was a big deal but in hindsight it wasn't AS big of a deal as it sometimes was in our heads. Had to learn to do things much differently but for me it didn't outweigh the benefits. It's definitely not for everyone though. It didn't bother me but my husband needs the everyday comforts of life and it was stressful for our children who worried about us living "outside of the box". So here we are back in the box.
Yes, there is soooo much to think about. We are doing a 10 week trip to Alaska. Any other things you discovered on your longer trip?
Hahah thanks for making this!! All exactly what I experienced during van life also!! I had a cargo van without high roof top, so crouching all the time sucks.. and being trapped in your moist van with your dog when it rains for days suckkks! Also finding places to stealth camp, or park and feel safe can be really difficult and stressful also on a daily basis. Pooping in a bag is a real thing hahah!
As for the noise and trying to sleep at night, that's actually why I quit van life unfortunately and sold my van.. I couldn't afford to pay 40-50$ a night in Canada in quiet campgrounds so that meant stealth camping which meant dealing with noises all the time at night.. I started getting the worst migraines of my life where I was afraid for my health. That's when I decided to drive back to my hometown and sell the van..
Van life really makes you appreciated the littlest things we take for granted in regular life.. like not stressing about power when you flip the light switch on, or turning on the tap to brush you teeth ect.
Kale Springs the tap is unhealthy. Chlorine and fluoride in there not to mention the old metal pipes that deliver it. Power is cool though. I wish I could legally plug into a meter similar to a parking meter and use some power. The grid is affordable. Housing is not
We bought a high roof for that exact reason!
On the insurance issue, if your van is registered as an RV, you can get 'full timers' insurance that will cover the actual value of your vehicle plus belongings. No this is not always easy depending on your state's motor vehicle laws, but is possible. 'Full timers' insurance basically combines driver liability, full coverage for the estimated value of the converted van and home owners/renters type insurance.
Do you know which states are better than others for this?
@@DenaPageIrlen For the insurance I don't think it matters what state you are in but, from what I've seen, Florida and South Dakota are the easiest for getting a conversion re-titled as an RV. They're also both 'no income tax' states which have companies that make establishing domicile pretty easy.
FL only requires a signed affidavit that you installed 1 of 3 conversion components( Propane, electric, water), though sometimes you need to talk to multiple supervisors at the DMV before getting one that actually knows the regs.
SD will register just about anything. Lots of people have registered 'off-highway only' MX bikes/ATV's/UTV's/etc as street legal in SD by simply adding lights and a horn. Getting a van re-titled as an RV shouldn't be too hard.
The rest is a matter for the insurance company. Any vehicle registered as an RV should be able to get basic RV insurance. This typically covers your standard auto-policy stuff(liability/collision/uninsured driver), but adds further protection such as if someone is injured while you are parked(tripped over your awning guy-lines/walked into your trailer hitch)/vehicle theft/theft of personal items etc. Of course for reasonable replacement cost of the van your insurance company will want to have someone perform an appraisal.
This would be no different than getting insurance on a custom or classic car. The value of a junker '59 Cadillac isn't the same as a fully restored example or mint original. Basically you tell them what you believe fair market value is, they have the vehicle appraised, and you work out a policy that you want.
The key difference between comprehensive RV insurance and 'full timer' is that you will pay a bit more because most people park their RV's 9-10+ months out of the year. With 'full timer' insurance they expect you to be moving a lot(more risk).
You also don't necessarily NEED 'full timer' insurance. Some companies will give you the lower rate(but all the coverage) with 'part time' up to 364 days a year. So if you spend a week on your sisters couch for the holidays...You're not full time but you get full coverage.
@@jamesgill5511 everything you said about Florida is correct, but the DMV doesn't have a formal form for the conversion...when I went into the dmv, I told them I wanted my van to be titled as a RV, they asked me if I installed the required things, I said yes, and they changed it right there. Also, Florida does not require you to live in a solid structure...go to sbimailservice.com, they show how to become a Florida resident in a day using them as a delivery point, and go enjoy...you would only need to come back to Florida once every 10-12 years to renew your driver's license...

@@timlubbers2884 It appears the signed affidavit is a county by county thing depending on which DMV office you go to. Poking around the Skoolie forums, some have been asked to sign one while others haven't but I do think there is an official form even if it's not always used.
On the topic of SBI, that is one place I looked at along with another I can't remember at the moment. I've also been looking at SD.

Same thing like traveling...it's never what you see, is what you get. Pictures always look the best, in that frame. But its surroundings and the story of how, where and when it was taken is a totally different story. At times I see these tiny homes on wheels and I'm like yeah, that sounds great- for a while. Then I actually start putting myself in that position and it would be a headache and stressful at times. This is life, everything has its ups and downs. A house on wheels, is still a house regardless. Thank you for sharing!

I'm living the van life and I don't have to worry about any of this. My solution to most of these problems: Buy a small RV (truck camper in my case). Bigger water tanks, better Insured, better toilet sitch, better shower sitch, and as far as the noise of the city, you can always go somewhere quieter. A little solid fuel stove takes care of moisture and condensation. I can't believe you two put up with having such a small amount of water. No way I could make it work with a van. That's just me :)

That was a very realistic view of van life and I really appreciated it. Before someone starts they need to know what the good, bad and ugly is about living in a van. I think you really shared things that people can really think about and see if they could handle it. The shower would be the tough one for me. My hubby would have trouble with the sleeping issue. Hi guys! As one seriously considering Van Life, for the rest of my life, I want to thank you for keeping it real. I am homeless. My canine companion & I have been living "tiny" ...in my 2002 Mazda Proteje... For almost 4 years. What I miss most is a bed to stretch out in and a fully functioning kitchen in which to prepare healthy meals. I hope you do not mind if I begin pestering you with questions... I intend to make this happen... Somehow... Some way. Thanks again, for being you!

I started van life in April 2019 but I had been watching videos about it for a year so I've been fine with all the downsides and just think of them as part of life. And nothing has been annoying, just part of life. If you're looking to van life, just be aware of what you're doing.
So have security measures - a tracer in case the van is stolen, a lock on the steering wheel, a dash-cam to record any accidents, leave duplicates of irreplaceable photos, files somewhere outside the van - with family or friends; Rig something up so you carry something on you when you leave the van that records what's happening inside it and you can watch it on your phone or something. I can't imagine bringing a pet. Get a gym membership at a 24-hour gym that's a nation-wide chain; then shower, swim, use the washroom, etc. there. Rule out an onboard toilet entirely and park in a place where you can use the washroom in an urban area, or go outside in a rural area. Replace the bathroom with a bigger water supply. Collect water jugs along the way. Watch weather forecasts and stay in urban areas on rainy days to do indoor stuff. Have lots of friends all over the place who invite you to their homes so you can get a break.

East coast Aus, pretty much every beach tha has a surf club has an outside shower. Plus public toilets.

2)dashcams are attached to the van that was just stolen-easily throw out the window in the first minute
3)being tethered to a gym makes this a restriction EXACTLY like owning a home

This Video should be marked as the COMPULSARY Video for all Mobile home enthusiasts to watch BEFORE they embark on anything.
Why? To scare people away from van life? No matter where and how you live there are up sides and down sides. If you just jump into something without considering the pros and cons first you should reconsider how you plan things. Besides if you try van life and find out you don't like it then make a new plan and try something else. That's just basic life.

@Drakilicious oh you mean like digging window wells, moving household goods in 10 degrees after riding the bus for two hours and then my bike for another 45 minutes. Ive done the type of hard work that most wouldn't be able to because it's too physical. No jobs, just Craigslist gigs for cash money, been living of CL for 4 years now. And also have a few different passive income sources from affiliate marketing ( my business) almost out of the rat race and certainly don't have a boss, take trips all the time. But, good looking out, bro. You go to work, I'll go to a new hot springs this week, in my van, where I live.
And before you starting telling me I'm a loser I'm going to point out this is very intentional, part of a larger plan to take care of Mom, save for a down payment for investment property and buy land in the mountains. My passions are freedom and making money while I sleep. All possible because I'm NOT paying rent, bro.
I’m noticing a pattern, everyone who has take up a extreme or unusual lifestyle almost always uses the same justification. People that vow to never get married, insist that everyone who is is miserable. Everyone always lists off the make-believe cons as a sort of knock-down for people. You can make anything sound bad with enough wording. Keep in mind “the other side” has access to running water, space for larger hobbies, unlimited power supply, supplies and a myriad of other things people take for granted. There are pros and cons to everything, and you don’t get to pick and choose.
@@nathandkreosote9917 we live on the "other side" with all the amenities at our fingertips but was never so happy as when we had no luxuries and just a truck to live in. But that's just my own personal experience. Some can't live like that.

Most gym companies are NOT truly nationwide.... and who wants to stay in a city big enough to support multiple gyms every night? And that won’t help you if you decide to drive through Canada and central/South America, there is no gym company that is multinational and all across the continent, even in the metroplexes....

Exactly why I went Truck Camper. Can separate the two. 26 gallons fresh water. A simple lick on the steering wheel and alarm system helps.

Honestly, you are my favorite Vanlifers. You project all that authenticity and sincerity I miss at most other vanlife youtubers. Keep it going, you are awesome.
Helpful tip: I've learned how to wash dishes without water. I became absolutely fed up with trying to wash dishes and while wiping down the counter top area, I started to ponder other methods to wash dishes without using water. Then I realised what I was doing. So I don't wash dishes in water anymore. I use wetwipes. For stuck on food (if I'm lazy and don't wash my plate right away), I will pour a small amount of water on the plate and let it soak for a while, but otherwise, wetwipes. For those of you who are scared that wetwipes might give you cancer, there are 99% water chemical free wetwipes available at the supermarket.

Wow, the theft risk really sunk in! I imagine myself in some kind of weird, far away country where I don't speak the language. I go swimming and then ... everything gone!! Not just your bags, no ... everything! Even your entire house! Scary thought! If I ever get to be able to have my van/camper I will try to do everything possible to protect against theft!! Thanks!!
Humidity isn't a problem for me. I have weathertech window guards, a maxfan, a china diesel heater, and a cubic mini wood stove.

When I am boondocking, I just don't take showers. I wet a washcloth, put some liquid soap on it, and wash myself. I wet a second washcloth and use it to rinse. My late wife used to do the same. Before boondocking, we would stop at a full hookup campground and she would wash all the fruits and veggies so we did not need to do it once we had no hookup. If I am honest, I have to say that since my wife passed away, I don't buy fruits and veggies if I am not going to have hookups. I know that I should so don't yell at me, but I can extend my boondocking time that way. I buy paper plates, plastic silverware, and plastic cups. The plates go in the camp fire and the silverware and cups go in a recycle bag that gets properly deposited when I get to town. A lot of boondocking sites have outhouses where I can deposit number two. My late wife would not do that but my doing so saved water and black tank usage. These practices really extends the time we/I can stay out without having to find a dump station.

As for noise while sleeping, I've always used foam earplugs. Really makes a big difference to quality of sleep once you get accustomed to them.

First really truthful video about real vanlife! I've personally done round trips of USA and Europe and I think this video is pointing out some really heavy aspects of vanlife! But I still love vanlife and the freedom to travel and live anywhere you want with minimum amount of money.

I value your opinion, you both a honest trustworthy people. The videos seem genuine. Yous know more about vanlife then most. I've known from other vanlifers from RUclips and the public it's not all glamorous but I'm sure there's way more positives then negatives.

All good points! The only one that I didn’t think much about before I moved into a van was the height restrictions. The others all come up if you do a vanlife trial by living in your car for a few weeks on a road trip. Highly recommend doing that before plunging into this lifestyle.

Thank you so much for this. One thing I would like van lifers to address is road resources! For example: where to park per state, fees for parking, whether or not rv parks will rent spaces to van or bus lifers, etc! All of the videos I see simply address the renovations and decor. This is the only one I’ve seen that addresses the living aspects!
