It's quite relieving that the front cameras are enough to keep autopilot going (at least to some extent), cause those are the only ones being reached by the wipers. Makes autopilot pretty robust.
This test does not demonstrate the comment you have made, though your comment is helpful for this interesting topic. The tester should first have autopilot enabled and then be blocking individual cameras to test if autopilot will 'keep going'. Autopilot behavior in this scenario (i.e. creating camera issues whilst autopilot is already enabled) would be an interesting test.
. , exactly. This test was done with zero scientific method. Lol. Better to start with full autopilot and cover cameras to see which features drop out. I think the test has already been done on other channels. Most likely lane keeping will work with just forward cameras, but lane changing needs other cameras.

You know the car will swerve in the opposite direction most probably throwing him out of the car if he as much as goes near a camera or let alone covers it , the above is true for The side cameras . And if he blocks front or rear it will brake and give up autopilot and if its rear it will accelerate very fast . Watch some tesla accident videos and you will get to know the power of tesla crash avoidance systems based on the power of those cameras . Also lane changing will be set to off when blocking the side cameras he wasnt in a multi lane road to demonstrate that properly. Dont try the moving /autopilot enabled your car will more than likely cause a crash if you do so
sagar, you just showed you know absolutely zero about autonomous vehicles. The steering angle cannot change that fast because it is limited to a certain speed to prevent tiny glitches firmware killing the driver instantly. And you will not see a single video showing conclusively otherwise.

@@tgm9991 Your house is (presumably) insulated and I doubt your roof is lined with electrical heaters. The cameras literally have heaters in each one. You can look at videos online of Tesla owners with thermal cameras recording this.

I think they said something about this in the recent FSD presentation. The old computer did not have the capacity to process data from all cameras at once, but the new computer does have enough capacity. So future releases will probably start using more cameras.
I was going to post a similar comment. I think with the new FSD computer you would get different results. Any chance you can get a new M# for testing? But then I would also wonder if you would need the latest software, like Elon is testing, to noticed a difference. Assuming the new FSD PC's are currently running the old software, like the ver you have and Tesla is not currently pushing out the latest build...?

Radar and sonar are secondary systems. Main system is visual. Same as if you drive with your eyes closed.

It may seem fine and sturdy but it won't make lane changes, and if any of the pillar cams or repeaters are out lane changes are disabled.
On AP1 (I don't know about the newer systems for this error) if you lose an ultrasonic sensor cruise is disabled as is autopark.

I had a parking brake fail. Disabled the parking brake (unplugged the parking brake cable)
And then i didn’t have cruise controll..
It is needed though. It also acts as emergency brake mechanism
The side cameras are just for detecting vehicles in other lanes to the side of you, it wouldn't change lane on indication with those covered I suspect.

It would be interesting to see how it handles the transition from France to UK (Eurotunnel). If i remember correctly, there is some lane flyover on the UK side to change the driving side.

Was hoping you would cover the reer ones and leave the front open to see if it still worked. The reer ones are useful for changing lanes especially on the interstate to check for cars in the other lane that could be going much faster than you are and make sure you don't get reer ended as soon as you change lanes.

Try blocking the radar sensor and see if autopilot still works, I believe it won't even though 📷's are not blocked.
You should try testing autopilot with no lines on the ground, maybe see if it follows the car in front of you.

Incidentally, Jesse from 'Now You Know' covered up B pillar and rear facing wing cameras, and Autopilot still worked on his M3.

Tesla's screen is not a true 60hz screen or it's 30hz because we can see it is refreshing.
It's the other way round. His GoPro is recording at 30FPS and the screen in Tesla is refreshing 2 times per second == 60Hz

I feel like taking off the cameras in order that the car warns would be best. Then you'd actually figure out the minimum amount of cameras necessary for autopilot. If you remove ones you know won't affect it, you're just adding cameras to the minimum for no reason
Great test! I'm so excited to see you doing so many random tests on your car. I've always wanted to do the same thing when I get one.
Bottom line here. Those cameras are there for a reason. In my opinion (which is worth what you paid for it) is that autopilot should not work unless *all cameras* (except maybe the backup camera) are working. Automobiles are dangerous. Riding in one at speed is a dangerous activity and every precaution should be taken to make it safer.
Am I the only one Concerned that a hobbled autopilot system would be "tested" on an undivided road with multi ton trucks in oncoming lanes?

When fully autonomous, what would happen if that front array stopped functioning or something flung onto it? Interesting thought, as at the moment, it seems it couldn't do much

This is what bothers me about driverless cars - what happens if there are issues with sudden loss of visibility on the sensors due to ice, snow, heavy rain, dust, fog, bird strike....etc....?
Tesla isn't entirely driverless, it still urges you to keep your hands on the wheel in the event it turns off the autopilot
If the autopilot is ever unsure of what to do it tells you to take over. You should always be vigilant anyway,we're not that far in technology yet aha.
The solution for fully self-driving cars is probably many things. Redundancy is one aspect, i.e. having multiple sensors covering the same direction, and a neural net that works flawlessly even when some sensors are out, so that temporary faults won't change anything. Another aspect is to prevent these things from happening. Having heaters in the cameras takes care of most of the problems. You should probably also use hydrophobic coatings. In more extreme locations, you'll probably need more extreme protection and prevention. As for the neural net, it needs to be trained to ignore rain, dust etc. and Tesla's neural net is already pretty far with that: watch?v=qgBBTDu1rzk

In easy drive conditions it's clear not all cameras needed for autopilot but am sure that detection of accidents, cars overtaking, and other strange events not directly in line of sight of front facing cameras will need them. If I were Tesla I wouldn't event call it autopilot unless all cameras are working 100% and would just call it drive assist shifting more responsibility on the driver to control it. Would be great to see all cameras get auto cleaning devices too but appreciate cost and design complexities would increase.

It would be interesting to see this test done again with autopilot assisted lane changing to pinpoint functions of those as well.
I don't remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure the current AP neural net is almost exclusively using the forward facing cameras for autopilot - with the exception being blindspot detection. It also said that this will change with the FSD neural net coming up in a few months.

@@TeslaDriver uk drivers have good discipline. in this part of the world, people forget the existence of indicators once they pass their driving test and overtake on whichever side they see fit. still i thk teslas system could give a warning msg of some sort if a sensor fails, especially when drivers rely more n more on technology.
