I think he's the poster boy because because he was the first one, the first guitar rock star. A lot of subsequent guitarists could therefor be accused of trying to copy an image, but not Keith. Because he was the original. (One of them of course, but certainly the most iconic one, image-wise)
Kieth was into drugs and alcohol and was known for it but that was just a hobby. Music was his existence. Was there another musician/guitarist in history who loved the guitar and his guitar idols more? I don't think so. It was pure, he is

This is a great time capsule not only for Keith, but the politics of the time. His lines about performing, and not only recording, apply today in 2024. He is still a performer. If you can? Do it. One thing he has never been in spite of his money and fame is full of crap. He has always been a real deal rock n' roller, and doesn't take BS from anybody, including the interviewer. The Expensive Winos were a good band, hence this promo interview. Unlike many rock stars, he was not " full of himself ". I'm getting ready to do gigs again because there is nothing like live performances. This interview inspired me, as I've performed for decades, and still can. Thank you for posting this.
I love the candid moments at the end when they are shooting B roll and Keith and the interviewer are just having a conversation and he asks him to do a prompt and Keith is so humble and accommodating. This is why people love Keith so much, salt of the earth that man.
salt of the earth indeed my friend. I'm 44 at this moment, bar the sex and rock and roll, I've done the drug thing and am sympathetic and empathetic as it's a struggle. His autobiography is amazing, a must read.

Keith talk like a junkie not greatful to have someone like Jagger to save him and the band. And still the same nowaday Keith could'nt play anymore, without Jagger no more shows. Surely a great guitarist but a bad childish guy for me.

@wkrp01 Taylor called Jagger and not Keith, to anounce he had to leave and Mick asked him to take a break and come back if he want it. Ron was already in the place jamming with Keith. The credit matter is mostly about : Sway, Winter, Till the next goodby, Moonlighmile, all Jagget/Taylor songs. Keith wasn't even in the studio much too stoned. But he never regret to steal thoses credits. My opinion is that Jagger couldn't broke with him without killing the band, only my deduction. Keith chose Ron as a guy who will always stay in his shadow. You could be a good composer and not a nice guy.
I love kieth. As a junkie who also stopped (youre never recovered, in my opinion, you just stop). I love how his down to earth serious and articulate personality came back. I get a kick out of his 70s interviews, still articulate but in a warm cloud of sedation. I was there for 5 years myself. Him and Ozzy. People like to rag on them for their years of inebriation. But struggling with substances while still holding on..maintaining and somehow functioning, is like driving a car while fighting Satan for the wheel. And I always respect someone who eventally kicks the devil out..or at least gets him to the back seat and regains control.
I'm on my late wife account, but I had a 1952 Telly that Keith wanted really bad. I had given it to a well known guitar tech to do a little bit of work ... and he sent a picture to him and a recording of it as well. It was an early one, and apparently it had a pick up from a lap Steel, which was slightly different, then the usual bridge pick up. It gave it a really interesting growl... not the usual twang. Keith, I believe uses a humbucker on his, whereas this one sounded like a humbucker, but was actually the oddball single coils that sometimes came stock. It was tempting because it was Keith! But I don't think I was even gonna get to meet him... i horse treated my way to a G&L Broadcaster and some 70's, strats. Who knows... he might have gotten that Telly in the end!
@teleguy5699 i wasn't that much of a fan. Now I probably would keep it. But I was a playing musician and I wanted guitars that I liked to play. It really wasn't that hard... i like strats. I have a 70s strat, scalloped frets, line buffer, piezoelectric ghost saddles, stock singles on the neck and middle, and a homade lipstick tube humbucker on the bridge. I looked around for a humbucker that would play well with the strat singles, then I remembered the tubes I had found long ago. I remembered they were weaker output than a strat, and a little thin, so i wired them as humbucker and tried it. It had the perfect blend with the strat pickups. Since I did that I see that they now have them for sale! I don't think they sound the same, but it's a good idea.
@@karijohartmann2649 I hear what you saying. You keep, especially back 50 years ago, the instruments that help you play. There wasn't a lot of nostalgia like there is today for old instruments. That's why some could be had for so cheap, even by 70's standards.

His book "Life" is well worth reading and showed a side to Keith few realise such as his love of dogs The story of Rasputin, a stray he found in Russia, is golden! Todays Keith Richards is a different man having now even quit smoking, apparently after Ronnie Wood persuaded him!

Keith Richard’s is the ultimate rock star and he also is a musical genius, songs like can’t you hear me knocking, and do do do do do ( heart breaker) will tell you right away of how great he is.
Keith is really beloved family man, with a loving family, who just happen to be one of the greatest creative guitar players in the best Rockand Roll band in the world. I live in Toronto and remember his drug bust that almost put him in jail. Due to some unusual circumstances and a couple of benefit concerts he survived the ordeal and because of this ordeal, it started him on the road to recovery. This ordeal and some other reasons the Stones became fond of Toronto from then on to this day.
Fun to hear his perspectives so many years ago,don't know what he quoted about The dead but seems odd that he would throw negativity ,towards any other musicians.will look it up.happy he is still with us and so full of good energy
I started with loving the music, but little windows, like this, into the person behind the public image make me respect the man more and more for his thoughtfulness, work ethic and dedication to his craft. Luv ya Keef!
Such a wise man at 44. He had already been through so much at that stage of his life. Very intelligent. He has always been cool, and I’ve always liked him.
I got the sense, during that part, of what a sweet guy he is at heart. Didn't act like an impatient diva, just a level-headed (and pretty buzzed) pro doing what's required of his job. I'm sure he could be a real a-hole at times, like most of us, but he comes across as a genuine sweetheart.
There are very few people in this world who know as much as Keith about the nuts and bolts of Rock & Roll. He knows how the beats bounce off each other, the anticipation, the backbeat, the swing and sway.......
There’s an interview on RUclips from the 70s when Keith was on the Old Grey Whistle. Even though he was high as a kite during the interview he still gave a great interview.
Just look at how often he is the benchmark for how rock 'n' roll a particular artist is. Whether that is (according to the critic) to a greater or lesser extent, Richards is usually the one who is measured against.
I've long thought he's highly intelligent. It's possible that music has contributed to being lateral in his thinking. His lyrics show his genuine emotions. And he's always answered questions very honestly. There's no bullshit here because he doesn't like fakeness.

I got the sense, during that part, of what a sweet guy he is at heart. Didn't act like an impatient diva, just a level-headed (and pretty buzzed) pro doing what's required of his job. I'm sure he could be a real a-hole at times, like most of us, but he comes across as a genuine sweetheart.

Very eye opening statement. I would have never thought of it that way, but very true.
Just look at how often he is the benchmark for how rock 'n' roll a particular artist is. Whether that is (according to the critic) to a greater or lesser extent, Richards is usually the one who is measured against.
As a Recording Engineer I approve of this observation.

I've long thought he's highly intelligent. It's possible that music has contributed to being lateral in his thinking. His lyrics show his genuine emotions. And he's always answered questions very honestly. There's no bullshit here because he doesn't like fakeness.
