Great review, Nick! I am on the fence on this one. Just got the Raiden and absolutely love it. One of the best feeling knives in my collection. I like the larger size of Voodoo, choil area, and bolster-ish lock.. but the price and wait time might make me pass on this one. It felt like nearly a year for the Raiden. Yeah... I hate to speculate but "no refunds" or a pre-order screams "living paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to give money back to people". Which also means there probably isn't a ton of money lying around for big QC issues. People just recently started getting their Raidens and they're being sold at suspiciously high rates on the secondary. I was considering a pre-order on the voodoo since it's so unique, but if the secondary for the voodoo is anything like it is for the Raiden, I'd rather just wait for people to start selling them off. So far, EMP EDC is the only maker, in my mind, that does pre-orders right. They actually give you a benefit other than "hur dur you get it first" - they give you a discount if you preorder.
Hey thanks for your comment! Just wanted to clarify a few things. I am not living paycheck to paycheck, I have a full time job 😅. The "no refunds" is common across the pre-order practice in the community so I don't think that's out of the ordinary since the funds are used directly to fund the production run. Much like the Raiden, that was made possible thanks to the good faith of the community. For major QC issues, if there are any I've purchased extra knives for that very reason and I'll do the same for the Voodoo. The secondary is what it is. I can't control it. People sell for their unique situations and it's not an exception here. Yeagers, Evos, Apex, and Lex have done the same. I try to price my products competitively within the market and not over inflate it. If you have any questions at feel, feel free to reach out 👊
As far as EMPEDC giving a discount if you preorder, the Nymble W is dropping today and it's the same price I paid for my preorder on July 30th, which I received on October 8th. So, no real benefit to preorder other than the fact that I got my W three or so weeks earlier than if I had waited on the drop. Not complaining, just sayin'...
@@nullknives Didn't mean to offend, though it was probably harsher than necessary. I've seen people burned by small batches because the maker essentially had just enough funds for the run and nothing more, and people were just stuck with whatever they got. I don't think the price is entirely unreasonable for "that" OEM. "That" OEM is my favorite by a mile, so much so that I'm basically collecting every knife they make at this point. I'd gladly pay $365 if it's as good as everything else they produce. For what it's worth, regardless of my original comment here, I fully anticipate picking one of these up. It'l probably just be on the secondary after everything settles down. If you're doing anything right, you're making good knives that don't look like every single other knife being made today, so thanks for that.

I think the take on obscuring the OEM name may be slightly off the mark. If I were an OEM consistently producing excellent quality and that fact was well known in the market, and if I were also producing some product under my own brand, I would want something in return for the use of my name in a new brand's marketing material. Use of the OEM name is a bargaining chip when setting manufacturing prices. Null wanted to keep the end cost down as much as possible and so forgo optional use of the OEM name. It could have been a $399 knife and been advertised as "manufactured by X" and that would have meant something to some buyers in the community.
The designer opted for a cheaper msrp. Had they said it was Reate it would show its high value but some customers would rather have it a bit cheaper, hence more sales. Like jack wolf knives. No one wants to pay that Money without knowing who does it. But if they had said Reate, more/smart people would jump on it. Overall its dumb because there is no reason not to say it in the end. But what you've said is why its done.
I don’t see why you would think this would be the same price or cheaper than the Raiden. Everything about this knife requires more machining and grinding so the cost would obviously be higher.
It’s really over designed like Pontiac cars in the early 2000’s where every car had 2 spoilers and 10 hood scoops. If it was dialed back just a bit would of been a home run for me. Plus the pre order can suck I mean look at the new field duty from liong mah it’s almost 6 months past when it was suppose to be released.
For the NUMBER of videos that you've commented on the OEM debacle, and it still hasn't left the building, speaks volumes about this questionable business practice. :-(
It depends on where you are and whether you're breaking an ordinance or law. It could be anything from confiscation and a fine to prison time. From what I can find, they generally won't charge you with anything serious unless you already have a record, are using it in a threatening way, or are trying to enhance the charges on another crime. I asked a cop friend of mine and he said that having a felony on your record is pretty life-changing, so to be sympathetic to that, neither he nor anyone he knows would bring those charges for carrying a knife if there was a legal lesser option like a warning or fine. Mileage may vary on that, of course.
Reate makes it. Meaning the price is worth it because they have a better microstructure for m390 than any of the other brands from china. Maybe 1 or 2 other brand do it decent as they worked with kknives of Switzerland to make a better protocol, but those were never tested yet. Winter knife co using m390 from bestech at 375+ is wayyyyy less value due to the protocol they use for m390 provides a lot LESS value due to its poor performance. So a rip off. Not to mention its basically a gimmick that is the same as an axis lock, so you pay a lot for so little value. The designer chose to go with Reate but reduce the price by not disclosure to who manufacturer's it. Had they made a deal to say it was Reate it would have cost more. Really its all bull shataki. I like that you don't like this design language and said so. I dislike the harpoon. But otherwise like it. I would prefer a different blade shape much like a shiro or CRK. But it works for my cutting tasks at work so I'd be okay with it. Only because its Reate is the reason I'd find it acceptable at over 300. Had it been bestech I'd say its a rip off even if it was $250- 300 using m390 even.
That's a good looking knife for sure but I've learned over the years that for me, those racy, unconventional or modernistic knife designs grow long in the tooth fairly quickly . I've gotten to the point where no matter how attracted I am to a particular design, I know I'll grow board with it so I just don't buy the thing. I stick to rather simple, classic or traditional designs , more practical designs, elegant designs and I find they stay in my collection and in use. No muss, no fuss, no scrambling to find a buyer for a knife I no longer want. I'm glad there are these unique, unconventional and stylish designs out there but they just aren't for me. Just give me a relatively simple, straight forward and comfortable handle in some nice looking material or another, a classic drop or clip point blade or even a wharny and slap some titanium or other metallic bolsters on and I'm all over it. I'll use it and love it and I don't have anything taking up space that I don't use, even if it is really good looking. But that's just me. To each his own I suppose. Am I becoming an old fogey?

Lost me at ‘Chinese made.’ Particularly considering news out of China in recent days. COME ON USA MAKERS - find somewhere else to have your knives made!
Dude what an absolute scam. Can you imagine buying a Chinese made knife for $400? Absurd. Assuming that's the nicest knife in the world, I would literally bet my life, my house, my dogs life and everything else I own that it doesn't even cost $40 to purchase from the manufacture in China. Most knives us geniuses are out here paying $100, $200 for that are made in China are costing the companies at most $5 per unit, and that's for really nice stuff. Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with made in China, China makes everything and there's a reason everything is made in China. China has an extremely skilled labor force and an advanced industrial base, by far the largest in the world, at or near the leading edge of almost every technology and emerging. There's a reason everything is made in China, cuz they do it better for cheaper than anywhere else. You can order junk and they'll make you junk, you can order the highest end stuff and they'll make you the highest end stuff, dollar for dollar better than anyone else. Just wanted to get that out of the way. The issue here is the markups. I could have a batch of probably as little as 500 of these knives made identically as this own for probably diddly squat. I don't know about this knife, even it's all tricked out and has very high fit and finish chances are it wouldn't be more than $10 a unit, packaged and shipped. Like I said most knives selling for $100-$200 are sold from factories in China for no more than $2 a unit, packaged and shipped. That $200 Artisan Cutlery you just bought cost Artisan Cutlery less than $5 to procure. Sweet markup.
I really like the shape of this knife (not the style).this can be a really good kitchen knife because the handle is higher than the edge of the blade. if streamlined, probably could be an alternative to spydiechef.

Am I becoming an old fogey?
well, your comment certainly got long in the tooth... you do you boo - the pre order sold out in less than 20 minutes - so you may be in the minority with your opinion, and we all know about those - everyone has one and they all stink.
@@ttattx - you came here to comment on my comment?
And then tell me to "do me"?
Lol
Ok champ. I'd say the same to you. And more importantly don't be so insecure about your own tastes to need everyone else to agree with it. And most importantly, don't get all butthurt if they dont.
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 wow. You have a lot to say huh. I DGAF what you think or say. It just seems you’ve got overly express yourself- and your continued banter just proves my point. I betcha have to respond to this. Gotta have the last word… ammi right “chump”?!
@@ttattx - oh yeah? You momma.
It just wouldn’t be a Shabazz video without an episode of over-salivation and swallowing.
Appreciate the thoughts and look around Nick.
I've has a ragin boner for this one and the pre-order date has been spray painted on my living room wall (as a reminder)...😄for over a week now.
This Voodoo speaks to me! WE is the believed OEM
Me too! Which version are you going with? I’m having a heard time deciding!
They posted on Instagram that it’s Reate.
Lost my attention at 350 to 400 for production overseas
Ereptile disfunction.......bahahahahaha
Lost me at ‘Chinese made.’ Particularly considering news out of China in recent days. COME ON USA MAKERS - find somewhere else to have your knives made!
Oui loik thit knoif.
Hey everybody, third comment here!
Wow that’s overpriced for a Chinese knife. No way I’m supporting that nonsense.
Hey everybody, first comment here!
I really like the shape of this knife (not the style).this can be a really good kitchen knife because the handle is higher than the edge of the blade. if streamlined, probably could be an alternative to spydiechef.
it's an interesting design, but frankly for 355 dollars I'd much rather get the Rike Lamella. In fact, I plan on it once they come back in stock.
