I love how the colors all work together. Question; why did you use modeling paste instead of gesso? Would it make a difference?

Modeling paste would fill in the texture gaps of the canvas much better. At least that's how i would see it.

Yes I have done that, and also work in front of a mirror or turn the composition upside down.
