- On July 28, 1984, the Games of the XXIII Olympiad opened in Los Angeles, California with ceremonies at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This video is the ABC network's live coverage of the opening ceremonies.
The closing ceremonies on August 12, 1984 are at • Games of the XXIII Oly... .
I remember watching these Olympic Games with my Mother. We would always call each other after watching every Olympic Games right up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Sadly, my Mother passed away in 2014. I still watch them, but these Olympics in 1984 were very special, because they were held in America.
What? LOL. Gimmie a break😊
I lived in Los at the time and watched the opening ceremony on TV, but I didn't realize how close I lived to the stadium until I was able to see the skywriting from my bedroom window 😮😊🙂‼️
In summer of 2028 I am celebrating like it is 1984
11:47 THAT is how the Star Spangled Banner should be performed. Brought me to tears. And I'm NOT American.
Can we go back to 1984! So much fun...Today's world is crazy!
6 years to go!!!
What I remember most about those opening ceremonies was the loud cheers and standing ovation for Romania 🇷🇴 for sticking it to the USSR!
Yes I was there. We cheered like crazy for Romania. I was very close to the field and you could see some of the Romanians were actually crying from the ovation. Yugoslavia, Italy, Ireland, China also got nice ovations
@@metsdudenj Nice!!! Must've been really cool and moving to experience that in person!
This brings back memories. I was in high school living in the suburbs of L.A. at the time. Los Angeles was the city to live in during the 1980s. It was touted to be the THE city to move to and I remember how festive this time was. L.A. is still a great place to be in.
@@Stevenimich yeah, it was a great place then. Not now.
@@Rico-ow3ys I disagree… But to each his own.
@@Stevenimich Fair enough.
In 5 1/2 years the Summer Olympics games will be back in Los Angeles by 2028.

I was a teenager when I watched this Olympic game in China, and very impressed by the warm welcome from Americans, loved this opening ceremony!!
40 years ago TODAY!!!! :) :) :) :) :)
Its an honor to be alive in the modern world... of technology and innovation 💡
55:40 The card trick to show the flags of the world throughout the stands. ABC was in commercial and missed the moment when the cards were raised. Jim McKay referenced a power loss at the end. I believe it was reported later that the some of the metallic balloons that had been released floated into and disabled a power source.
Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics!
Wish I could go volunteer for LA28! I visited the training center while on vacation and even sang the national anthem in exchange for seeing an athlete's gold medal. After seeing a ceremony I was hooked! I would love to volunteer or perform on the biggest world stage on earth! But the closest relative I could have stayed with is in Sacramento. Maybe if it comes to the Midwest someday, highly doubt it though
Just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Be there in 2028, L.A. third time.
I heard about the opening ceremonies in Paris. No thank you. I rather watch this one again.
thank you very much for sharing this with us!

It looks like this was the first year they did any sort of large scale pre parade of nations performance.
This opening ceremony feels like a disneyland movie moment fitting for the movie town Hollywood Los angeles is. I wonder what 2028 will be like…. Can we pull it off?

And I believe at 2:44:03 onward, marching on the left.
Los Angeles is home to one of the largest communities of Filipinos abroad.
My uncle Andy was there.
I have to go back and change the past and make a revised time rather than the original timeline in the Los Angeles Olympics until I take down the USSR attackers to save the Korean Air Flight 007 on September 1, 1983.
Commentators:
Jim McKay, Peter Jennings & Donna DeVarona
Us Americans came out in Track suits!! So 80s 😂😂😂😂
When did the crowd become the flags around the world?
1:05:28 Mikis Theodorakis music.
Is there a version of this without commentary and commercials?
Only if the BBC Has it. ABC 7 Los Angeles won't allow it (Copyrighted)
Ikr I've been drawing a diagram of nations participating from 1896 to present in my drawing book, and most of the nations were missing in the commercial break.
I can’t wait for 2028 back in our City!!!
The opening ceremony LA 1984 was great, but sometimes too much schmaltz with exaggerated national pride. I'm very much afraid that 2028 will just be an American Music Show.
The handover ceremony in Paris was very weak in my eyes, they just moved it from the Stade des France to the Pacific beach in LA after Tom Cruise threw himself off the roof of the stadium, that was the best thing about it. What you then got to see was certainly not to everyone's taste.
I found it very boring.
1:07:52 in 2024 that’s going to be a awkward moment
55:40 the best part
Thank you
I was only two years back then 😂 I miss my old country flag of IRAQ

Let me guess, you'd rather have the disco hot mess that was the 2024 Paris theme, right?🤣It moved you, right? Moved your bowels to release waste.
