- First heard this song on the legendary old time album by Chance McCoy and the Appalachian String Band, I believe Adam Hurt played banjo on that one. I later learned the song is in fact much older, and has African-American roots. Knowing this the lyrics got a whole new meaning. I imagine Afro-American slaves endlessly working the fields, hoping to reach God's kingdom when they keep on plowing
