  • This high desert bluff was named El Morro, translated "The Headland", by Spanish Conquistadors who first visited the bluff around the late 16th century whilst on their way to conquer the region north of Mexico.
They greedily aimed to loot and sack the fabled 7 Cities of Gold. All they found were Puebloan villages made of mud and Adobe.
This is spectacular walking country. It is also an important archaeological site as carved into the shear sandstone walls are hundreds of ancient petroglyphs, Spanish Conquistadors' dated inscriptions as well as many Anglo American inscriptions too.
The history of El |Morro is fascinating:
A thousand years ago Puebloan Peoples made their home here on the top of the bluff. The petroglyphs they carved into the rock face gives an insight into their culture and way of life.
In the late 16th century the Spanish used El Morro as a watering place for over the next 200 years, carving numerous inscriptions into the rock face.
Finally, in 1854 the American bought the northern part of Mexico. Soon after many American travelers, pilgrims, solders and others visited the bluff and carved their stories into the rock face.
