Magnificent playing. Szerying was very much a 'fiddler's fiddler' - never 'quite' the household name as with the Heifetzes and Menuhins, but IMO much, much more musical than either. Gorgeous Guarneri in use here also :-). Thanks for the upload.
This in my opinion makes the most musical sense. The sound of the instrument is glorious and in my opinion this is the best performance of Kreisler’s piece that I’ve heard including the Heifetz performance.
@@justusforviolin2719 I've played this before and now I'm playing Ysaye's second sonata. The sonata is way harder but you can hear what influenced Kreisler in his compositions as you said. Especially in phrases or polyphonic parts. Also important to note that Ysaye actually knew Kreisler, and as he was writing pieces dedicated to violin players (based on their character and things like playstyle/overall technique) like Thibaud or Enesco, he also wrote a piece for him - Ysaye Sonata No. 4. Definetely worth a listen.
@@luxio6765 I played the Obsession sonata (my first real exposure to Ysaye outside of his string crossing arpeggio exercise) for my college senior recital 15ish?! years ago, I don't know why I never noticed the connection til now...there is even some Ysaye in Kreislers famous Beethoven concerto cadenzas 1st and 3rd mvts! They clearly seem to have influenced each other
not many violinists are capable of that - but maestro Szeryng did not drink before this video instead he gave us a master class in how to play the violin. I hope you understand me other wise I will be happy to tell in Español.
@@uliwidmaier5192 Szeryng was one of the few to regularly play both Strad and Guarneri - most players fall into one of the two camps (Heifetz - Guarneri; Milstein - Strad, etc). Always a gamble booking a ticket for Szeryng as one never knew which fiddle he'd be playing!
Depends on the repertoire. Concerto-wise, Strad for Mozart and Beethoven; Guarneri for the likes of Bruch and Brahms... David (who helped Mendelssohn with his concerto) played a 1742 del Gesù (later owned by Heifetz), so the Guarneri would have been apt here too.

Looks and sounds like early 80s. He's at the top of his game, with maximal tone and not yet any of the declining physical strength that sometimes affected him in the later 80s
"We've done it! We finally succeeded in bringing Darren McGavin back from the dead! So what now?" "Well, how about we see how well he can play the fiddle?"
No modern players can hold a candle to the generation represented by Szeryng here: the list is unbelievable. Heifetz, Milstein, Oistrakh, Stern, Szeryng himself, Kogan, Ricci... We will never hear their likes again - almost all of todays top fiddlers are too much like 'peas out of pods' (Rachlin excluded).
Tò be honest Szeryng Is a Master and a Lord. Mintz in that recording with Deutsche Grammphone Is really perfect not a single note out of tune and a incredible sound with the Guadagnini. Here Maestro Szeryng Is Simply Amazing and his rich tone Is a gift for all musicians. Comparing, and i hate this, Mintz was perfect but not charming.

No matter what he played Henryk Szeryng always created magic.
Shout out to whoever chose this camera angle. Most of the time, it's an angle that a teacher would use to demonstrate to their student. 👏👏👏
What an amazing violin player, I think he is the best I have ever seen in my eyes. He has such a wide range of emotions he can play on the violin.

What a magnificent bow arm! Among the best ever!
So far the version I like best of this piece. More musical and flowing than others.
This piece sounds like a love letter to Ysaÿe.
Dissonant love!❤️
It is way easier than anything that madman wrote haha
I was just thinking that! I started learning it a couple days ago, There is a LOT of Ysaye influence!

Amazing use of the bow!
LA MEJOR VERSIÓN de Recitativo y Scherzo Capricho de Fritz Kreisler.
Who knew that drinking THAT much of cognac could be so beneficial to the overtones ?)

Hahahaha!!!
Haha! Judging by his amazing playing he was probably highest-functioning boozer.... ever
Is it that true?...
Szeryng was famously increasingly drunk for performances the older he got. He’s pretty old here😂
Yes man. we love you!!!
Hands down my favorite violinist

Great! Thanks!
Great Szeryng
lindo 😍
Incredible ...
Lovely
My hunch he is playing a 1700's Guarnarius violin.
Yes. The 1744 "Leduc," now being played by Augustin Hadelich.
An outstanding beneficiary!🙏🏻

Please, WHEN Szeryng record that video?

@@uliwidmaier5192 He certainly is not at the top of his game here. His technical ability has deteriorated quite a bit.
I just saw this on PBS and thay have this footage archived as 1975.

I know it's supposed to be a joke but maybe it should be the other way around since Szerying died around 20 years earlier
Hilarious!😂❤️
this version is better than Mintz version
Mintz has aged very badly violinisticly... nothing to do to the young shlomo
