Dimash is singing with and has to be cognizant of not overpowering an 83 year old man who admitted prior to their duet that he no longer has the same voice he used to have. Dimash grew up admiring both Domingo and Pavarotti and to be able to sing with Domingo was a great honor to him.

And in the duet Kaufmann & Hvorostovky, Dmitry Hvorostovsky is my favorite singer, and in the duet Dimash & Domingo, Dimash is my favorite singer))) As you correctly noted, Dimash does not at all pretend to be an opera singer, this is not his role. Thanks for listening. Some people got. bit hot under collar thinking I was being critical of Dimash and Domingo. Others thought it was wrong to make comparisons with 'real' opera singers! In fact, all I wished to do was to answer some questions about vocal style, technique and voice categorisation. It is crazy to say, "Dimash sometimes sings like a baritone." What does that even mean? Kaufmann does too, if that's the case. And Domingo is clearly a tenor who likes to sing lower parts now. But the big difference was the closed vowels of Kaufmann, particularly on high notes. Dimash doesn't imply this technique and therefore sounds less 'operatic.'

Today I've witnessed two men in tears at this piece and one who said that after a terrible day, just listening to this wiped everything away. That's what counts, not this snobbishness of what's true Opera or not, just the fact that two incredible voices singing music written so long ago can bring joy and peace to so many different people today.

I found your analysis fascinating William. Most Dears don't have as much experience or training in the classical and operatic voice as you do so we do miss quite a lot when Dimash sings in that style. I remember defending Dimash against the criticism that he could not sing opera like a trained opera singer, who can project the voice to the back of the auditorium without a microphone. Well, it's probably true. He has never claimed to sing opera. He uses some of the techniques when he wants to add dynamics to a song. He always uses a microphone (unless singing in private). He is also only 29 years old. I have been told that singers who only sing opera do not start singing it properly in roles on stage until after the age of 35. It takes time to gain maturity. I think that anyone criticising Dimash for not singing opera correctly is not understanding what his chosen purpose is - and that is to make his music accessible to everyone, everywhere, and to spread love and connection. By limiting himself to one genre he would not fulfil that destiny. He is Dimash, and he is so much more than an opera singer. And I'm glad. We are lucky to be alive now and be able to have our lives changed by him in such positive ways.
Although the other duet was very fine, when Dimash started to sing the climax in his definitive soaring style it took my soul with it and my heart beat faster and I even held my breath.
Perhaps we feel his own soul soaring and it takes ours with it ❤😂

    • @1worldone

This makes me wonder, I've been reading a lot of comments from youtubers - fans and haters alike and been listening to opera singers in reactions and mostly the most or as if the greatest difference between Dimash's singing and full opera is the power of the voice being able to project with and without a microphone - I mean, does that even matter in a world where we access the most remote part of the world virtually? Our ears can compare whatever we can hear out of an electronic medium, and even that is not standard/the same for all. If we are comparing singing in an opera house with all its acoustics in place, and singing in a regular theater or stadium or non-opera house venues, then the argument is valid. But I think it is pointless so the comparison should be the quality of the voice at least. Dimash has that - quality, versatility, power - you name it.
P.S. Glad I didn't hear that "power of voice without a mic" comparison here. It's actually okay, as long as that is not the focus. Thank you Bangkok Voice Coach!

    • @debbiemorgan859
      @debbiemorgan859 Год назад +2

Actually I have to point out something that isn't true at all, the mics here were purely for the TV recording. William himself pointed this out earlier. There was no loudspeaker system visible in the theatre.
Also Dimash has been seen in concert performing without a microphone, even in a massive stadium. If he knows the acoustics are right he will often finish Autumn Strong without a microphone.
There is a whole video on RUclips of moments when Dimash performed without a microphone, even once when a mic fails halfway through a song. He adjusts his technique and finishes the song without it.

Speaking completely objectively, not even as a Dear I honestly preferred Dimash's version. I'm not an experienced opera buff, I couldn't tell you why but just the tone, the openness and richness yet lightness of Dimash's voice was more pleasing to my ear. I could (and have) listened to Dimash's version endlessly. The other one, not so much. Once would be enough.

Many bel canto teachers have found that Dimash provides a cross-interpretation between rigid classical singing (which has to follow certain rules and exactly what the author of the piece wrote, from the notes and durations, the portamentos, the expressiveness... Everything) and most popular flexibility. For purists, let us remember that Dimash dreamed of singing with Plácido Domingos since he was little and it was the Maestro himself, Don Domingos, who suggested the duet. Dimash only had one day to remember the work and make the recording as this moment is part of the competition (like a talent show) for children with musical talent: The “Virtuosos”! Dimash, in addition to Plácido Domingos, were part of the Juri, accompanied by Erika Miklósa (opera singer), Adrás Keller (violinist, conductor and musical director of the Budapest Concert), Hauser (cellist), Plácido Domingos Jr. composer), Pablo Sanz Villegas (classical guitarist), GAbriela Rachid (cultural director) and Harvey Goldsmith (music promoter)! The show was in Budapest (Hungary) from January 16th to 26th this year, 2024!

Oh I loved this comparison. What a luxury to be able to compare (without any judgement) four of the world's greatest singers singing one of the most memorable duets there is. Hvorostovsky is of course legendary, and I think Kaufmann just gets more and more compelling as his career develops. Domingo sounds fantastic for his age, and we just must not forget that he is one of the greatest tenors of all time. And Dimash is Dimash is Dimash and almost uniquely talented in his ability to cross genres. What a treat all round 🙂 Thank you.

For classical musicians and aficionados, the darker, closed operatic sound is beautiful and impressive. But most folks are put off opera the first time they hear it, precisely because of that type of sound. Thus, with all massive respect for Kaufmann and the incomparable Hvorostovsky, the more open, brighter tones that both Domingo and Dimash bring to this, will likely have much broader appeal. If classical music is to stay alive, it will have to adapt to modern tastes (I say this as an orchestral string player). These younger, more neoclassical/pop artists who are actively using social media and putting classical music in fresh contexts and with more modern tonalities are the ones who are giving the classical genres a chance to reach new audiences.

    • @willeke-.-9461

Opera is artificial and on the other hand so beautiful direct because mikes are forbidden. The singers have to fill a theater of 2500 seats and sing louder than the orchestra plays. The technical requirements are very difficult to master and cause often rigidness. I suspect the voice of Dimash (missing a core) is much, much lighter than Domingo's and that the mikes correct that in this clip. Mikes can correct far more things to make everything sound smooth and nice (as you undoubetly know). So you can't really asses this. I don't like the lack of emotions. I sincerely love opera and classical music, because it's live with all its imperfections and has a big range of all kinds of emotions. Dimash does amazing things with his voice, very original, not following the rules of opera singing, making his own visualisations and shows. But always, always with a mike; he has to, otherwise he destroys his voice. He has huge succes with that. I think he is a modern artist in his own right. And then something strange happens: his fans (and he himself?) want recognition of the opera world. Why? Opera is a dying art. You can modernize and pimp some things for the time being, but in essence the material is ages old. Some spin-offs are nice, but still less popular than the original.

@justwantthebestvoice4492 It's not "suddenly". It's a reoccuring theme since I became aware of him two years ago and got intrigued (but very fast bored) by what he was doing. Most of his fans are just as fanatic as opera fans regarding their "star" being the best singer of the world. Me too. I'm fan of a tenor who had a great voice (not anymore) but is 15 years later still on stage because he still commands the stage and can channel emotions like nobody else. He has sung the same duet with Domingo during a very large open air concert (so with mikes!). Domingo is a gentleman, he adapted to him, just like he adapted to Dimash. ruclips.net/video/3JiXVT_TNPo/видео.htmlfeature=shared

@justwantthebestvoice4492 I Really don't understand what you trying to say. If he does "crossovers" like this, he gets reactions. So what? I only pointed out that a lot of his fans want recognition in regard to opera singing. They just want all of us to say that he has the best voice in the world, better than opera singers. May be that's the case, I don't know (you can't tell from this clip). I don't care. I'm interessed in good stories and deep emotions, told with music. And for me opera is the best way to get that without all kinds of techno distortions, even if the voices are not the best of the world (provincial companies). Not many people share my opinion. What Dimash does is far more mainstream and brings him much more money. So what justwantthebestvoice4492?

Yes, we can hear significant differences between the two performances.
However, it should also be taken into account that Dimash did not know that he would have to sing this duet before he arrived in Budapest, but only that he would be a judge in the classical music talent competition.
Maestro Domingo surprisingly told Dimash that they were going to sing a duet. He also said that he himself will sing the baritone part, because he no longer able to sing the high notes of the tenor. (83 years old. Btw, never was a baritone, but always a tenor)
Dimash had one day to learn the song (and they made just a few rehearsals) meanwhile Dimash was sick and had a nasty cough.
If we take all these into account, it's not a bad performance. 🙂

Hello William, Classical music needs young artists like Dimash to pull his audience to the classical world. Dimash has the voice, skills, training, desire & charisma to do this. Especially, when singers like Placido and Bocelli are not as active anymore. I have heard of Bizet, but not this song. I loved it! I would never have heard it if it wasn't for Dimash. When it comes to the details like open vowels vs. closed vowels, types of tenor voice and etc., my eyes glaze over and I snooze. To me, this was a masterpiece and I will search for more Bizet music. Classical music does not have to be stuffy and ellitest when it is presented like this video did.

I have no doubt that Dimash would have rolled through it all in one breath if called upon to do so. I also watched the Placido/Carreras version of this duet. We who aren't exactly informed about opera have no choice but to listen according to our preferences. I'm beginning to wonder if truly, truly technical opera has become a "sport" as much as it is an art in that sense. It's like me trying to judge the riding sport of drasagse. The experts see many differences but I see none. In the same way untrained ears can't appreciate opera. There certainly must remain a niche for it-perhaps on a competitive level, but imho, if it is to gain in popularity they should find a way to make it more palatable for the general public? What do you think about that, Willam?

This is one of the reasons (what I have read) why Dimash didnt choose opera. ruclips.net/video/sZSTk2uzNIE/видео.html

👍👍Thank you William for this video. Your remarks are instructive and full of delicacy. I dreaded the concept of comparison, but that was not knowing you well. I appreciate you, greetings from France

Love it! I had hoped to hear this type of comparative analysis. Maestro Domingo spent his career as a tenor- of course his technique is that of a tenor. I have listened to the late Dmitri Hvorostovsky in comparison to Dimash with the beautiful trio of Ti Amo Cosi and they are entirely different styles. As you’ve indicated, all of these singers are phenomenal in their own right, I just felt the Dimash/Domingo duet was lighter and - for me - musically more compatible with my tastes. Still worth hearing the different interpretation. Additionally, I suspect that Dimash may not have had quite as much preparation in advance of this performance- he is quite busy these days! Cheers from Canada!

Thank you for this interesting comparison! Interesting for me because I never heard this piece by "proper opera singers" at the height of their career. 😉I was a little surprised that I really love Domingo and Dimash's duet better, especially because of the tenor sound of Jonas Kaufman. For me his vowels as you say, are too closed and I miss the bright open easy sound that Dimash has. In addition Dimash and Domingo are so connected and go together through this song, no intention to outshine the partner what would have been easy for Dimash, considering the age of Domingo and that he's never been a baritone. But maybe we shouldn't compare at all. But now I'm even more baffled how great Dimash sounds compared to a pure classical tenor - for us it is already so normal what he is capable of - so thank you for reminding us how special and beautifully sounding Dimash is! 😘

Kaufmann is a lovely tenor but he is not landing well with Dimash fans! I feel that there's plenty of space in the world of music for all.

Gracias!!!

Im not a fan of opera style. I only listen to it coz of Dimash and i like it coz his mixin pop in that style which for me will attract more listeners. He is experimenting this style that can let the younger generations enjoyed it more. Maybe I am ignorant but opera needs an acquired taste and mostly for aristocratic and older people😁😁Dimash changed my views. I watched other performances of the famous opera singers with this aria but i got bored. For some reason, i felt like got an ADD symptons, cant sit still or cant focused😂😂However, Dimash and PD, got goosebumps and cried like you..I wonder if Dimash has to make adjustments to his singing in order not to over power PD voice. We know Dimash can belt and hold his breath like no tomorrow..😄😄like always, I enjoyed your reactions and sharing your knowledge, William. Enjoy your beautiful whether in Bangkok coz in Canada been freezing cokd for almost 2 weeks and snowing like crazy😂😂
