This is without a doubt my favourite mm song, this tutorial inspired me to pick up my guitar again after 2 years of no use, been sitting here trying to learn for the past 5 hours, thank you man 👍
Hell yeah thank you!! So happy to hear that! Keep coming taking breaks and picking up the guitar too. You learn a lot of muscle memory in your fingers when you put it down! Thanks for watching and have fun!! I've got a bunch of other MM videos too. And when you learn the techniques in this song, you can play a lot of other good MM songs.
Thanks bro this helps a lot ... The tabs are good but seeing someone play it just seems to work way better for me than plain tabs I dunno tho I'm only a week into playing.
Agreed. Seeing someone play it helps me way more than a tab and that's why I started making these videos. Keep playing! It's so fun and rewarding. It's very difficult, and you will get frustrated... But if you keep coming back and pick the guitar up you will get better. Make sure you tune really well! Tuning is extremely important. Tune each time tou pick it up and have fun. Modest Mouse is great to learn starting out because it's not too difficult when you get certain techniques down like octave chords and muting. Watch my other MM videos too! They're all fun and not too difficult. Thank you for watching!
Saw your post on reddit. Thanks so much for posting this. I'm relatively new to guitar and mainly inspired by MM. I hope you put out a lot more videos. Thanks a lot for explaining a few things, this is the first time I've been introduced to octave chords. Lastly, thanks for putting up the tab you used (I've used that tab as well) and for mentioning any changes to it you'd make. Hope to see more.
Thank you! That's awesome to hear! I love Modest Mouse. I will keep making videos until I run out of songs or things to make them about. I just hope the videos are helpful and easy to understand. If you've got any recommendations or requests or anything let me know and I'll see if I can help you out. I'm mainly on a kick of Long Drive and LCW right now, but I know many others
If you have any questions about guitar in general or anything else, feel free to ask too... I know there's a ton of information about every little thing regarding guitar and it can be daunting
@@siddthekid5046 The videos are really useful. I guess I'd say mention the strumming pattern if it's weird at all but the strumming pattern seems pretty easy in this one. The funny thing is I spent so long getting my fingers to correctly press down on strings and now you're asking me to bump into two other strings to mute them Haha. Difficult to change positions on the fretboard and keep that light pressure on the octave chords to mute the other strings
@@dylanc2174 Ah, yeah! I forget to mention the strumming pattern. I think I did that in my Edit the Sad Parts lesson, but I will make sure to try and do it at least once in each video. Thanks for pointing that out. Haha! Yes, any new technique on guitar is extremely difficult at first, but gets extremely easier the more times pick your guitar up and come back to it. Keep working on the octave chords, even if for a couple minutes a day, and it'll be second nature within a couple of days. Octave chords are awesome What song should I do next? I was thinking DOin the Cockroach, Polar Opposites, Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, or Workin on Leavin the Livin. Or maybe a Pavement song.
These videos are so awesome dude! I totally agree that the sound Isaac created on the early records was so uniquely amazing (bent harmonics are my jam! See Swervedriver and Archers of Loaf for more great examples). I still like new Modest Mouse, but this stuff was clearly on another level imo. Thank you so much for the tip about picking near the bridge for natural harmonics. I was having trouble getting anything out of the ninth fret. Then again I am playing unplugged atm so it's probably easier with some amplification.
If you don’t have a whammy bar you can bend the harmonies behind the nut but instead of going back and forth with your left hand play the harmonica with your right hand by using your pointer finger and thumb and keel your left hand behind the nut bending
Thanks for the vid man, this is by far the most useful (and accurate) tutorial for Dramamine that I have come across. Kudos. Have you done a full tutorial on "The Waydown" that you teased during this vid?
Thank you! I appreciate it man. I actually did do a full lesson for the Waydown about a month or so ago. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/gg1qzn67_XM/видео.html I so just uploaded a couple from Sad Sappy Sucker too. Secret Agent X-9, Dukes Up, and Four Fingered Fisherman a while ago. Thank for the kind words and for watching the vids!
Hey, love your channel! Great taste in music too! Lol Quick question.. What’s the guitar you’re playing? You always have the capo covering the logo! Lol Thanks for the great vids!
Nice, Mat! Yes, you 100% can. Here is an old crappy cover of Dramamine I did a few years ago when I was trying to figure out out to record onto a computer. I didn’t have a bass so I just played the bass part on the guitar and looped it like you’re saying here. soundcloud.app.goo.gl/nBD365hsgM2Kvhjq9 Also found this other recording I uploaded apparently. This one is me and my buddy jamming. I’m playing the drums and looped the bass part/harmonics. It’s just a shitty cellphone recording soundcloud.app.goo.gl/LqgHgSFCnys3NVXJ8

@@siddthekid5046 they are sick man, edit the sad parts, is a great cover too, funny enough that's the song I'm learning atm and been having a blast. And no worries man, I'm subbed :)
hi so this may be a stupid question haha but my guitar is in standard tuning and i’m not able to make those high notes, i was wondering if it’s because i don’t have any pedals?
Yeah, the harmonics can be really really hard to hear since they’re so quiet. There is a sweet spot for getting them to ring out too. I find that plucking pretty close the the bridge helps. Also, make sure you’re on your bridge pickup too. Pedals help a lot but you shouldn’t need one. If you have a Gain knob on your amp, turn that up a little bit until you hear the amp start to “break up” when you strum hard. Gain/distortion helps a lot to get harmonics to sustain loudly
