  • I've finally cracked the "film look" code shooting with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Apple Log, and importantly using film emulation LUTs in post-production. I'm now creating the most filmic, and yes - cinematic images I've ever done - and you can, too.

    All footage in this video was shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max using the Blackmagic Camera app and Apple Log. Main rig was a Beastcage and Moment VND filter. And a few shots were also captured using the Beastgrip DOF MK3 and a Rokinon 50mm cine lens.

    Shooting in LOG allows us to make so much more of our footage. I think your LUTs look great!

    Shooting in black magic or apple
    LOG and then using Dehancer seems to work great for me and I only use a 13 pro max

      Yeah, that’s a nice combination. Though the 13 PM I shoot Filmic Pro Log since Apple Log is only on the 15.

    Loved this explanation. Im just getting into looking at extra lenses + nd filter for my setup and its a bit overwhelming. Do you have a recommendation on a nd filter for a iphone 15 pro max, then a good macro lens that wont break the bank? Ideally they would be compatible with each other, but not necessarily the same brand. Then add a wide angle later on down the road. Again super nice video!

      I like Freewell or Moment for good, but affordable ND or VND. But it depends on how you’re attaching it. Most lenses now have proprietary mounts, besides Beastgrip & Moment (you need their proprietary mount, but then can use any ND brand). So just depends on the ecosystem. Pretty much all the macros I’ve tested work well, so it’s a subjective call in the end. This article I wrote might help with your decision… www.iphoneographers.tv/post/next-gen-iphone-lenses

    What’s your thoughts on the Blackmagic App along with a lens attachment try to get the film look? I’m open to lens attachment suggestions since I want to shoot short films on my 15promax but have no idea which camera lenses I should buy to try and get as close to 35mm look as possible

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад +2

      Blackmagic app is very good. When you say lens attachment, are you referring to a DOF adapter or just external lenses?
      Either way, I would probably go with beastgrip if you’re wanting to do narrative filmmaking. Get a Beastcage and their 1.33x anamorphic and/or 1.7x tele. They also have a DOF adapter.

    If you use a conversion LUT on your iphone, later on Premiere Pro, If you dont like the color you can turn it off or it gets burn to your video?

    • @LIFETRIPBEATS
      @LIFETRIPBEATS 5 месяцев назад

      You can record with a LUT as a preview, and then change it however you want in post

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад

      You can choose to burn it in or just have it as preview, I would suggest just previewing it that way you have full control in post.

    I've never seen any benefit from the fake log's, but the real one is amazing...
    I think you highlighted the exact reason why using LUT's for conversion is not ideal. You can take RED footage and iPhone footage convert both into ACEScct, apply the same macro level grade to all clips (including the "look"), and then deliver the whole thing to the final format. You can use Resolve's built in color management, which costs no money, to automatically convert all footage into ACES, then apply your timeline level grades, and then you can choose to output to HDR PQ or HDR HLG or D3 P65 or Rec709, using the same exact timeline.
    I'm sure your LUT's are great, but they won't necessarily help me match the RED (or Arri, or Sony, or Canon) footage to the iPhone footage. In 3 clicks, you can have all the color management done automatically, 100% accurately.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yes absolutely, that’s probably a little more advanced workflow than most people who watch this channel use, but that is a good option and if you know Resolve you can do a lot of great stuff just in the app for sure.

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@iphoneographers yeah, but it can be surprisingly simple, i hope to one day make a video showing how to convert any footage in 3 clicks.
      Definitely inspired by your videos, to make some of my own, my first one is going to be on why DLog-M is basically useless (when compared to HLG) in the context of DJI Mini 4 Pro.
      Keep up the great work! I learn a lot by watching you.

      Would love to see a comparison of the results I expect yours will be more cinematic, as you made that your intent with the LUT, but I am actually shocked how good the footage looks just doing the steps below..
      The steps would be:
      1. Create a new project in Resolve
      2. Click Project Settings
      3. Change Color Management from Davinci YRGB to Davinci YRGB Color Managed
      4. Click Save
      5. Drop your Apple Log footage on the timeline and edit as usual.
      Can be way more complicated if you want it to be, but doesn't have to be, the steps above get you straight to rec709 with no muss no fuss.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад +2

      It can definitely look great just doing a transform that’s for sure. But yeah, I worked to get a filmic gamma curve and to emulate the color & contrast of various film stocks.

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@iphoneographers It would also be really cool if we could buy a version of the LUT that take Davinci Wide Gamut (or ACES) as the input and outputs the same, so we can incorporate it into a color management pipeline.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад +1

      No. Technically they could add it I think, but ain’t happening. Apple claims it’s because of the newer processor, but who knows…

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@iphoneographers bypassing the image processing was a hardware change, from what I have seen. There is no imaging pipeline to do that in older phones. It's not that its computationally expensive to output a different set of numbers, its that the camera hardware is already wired up a certain way in the older phones, from what I understand.
