Completely agree with Fantano about Elvis. I have a professor who used to work for Colonel Tom Parker, which some of you may know, was the manager of Elvis. If you look more into Parker’s past, he used to be a con artist who scammed people for money (not gonna go to far into that do you research.
But anyways, my professor worked for Elvis at a young age and has told a few stories about the experience. One that has been sticking with me is a conversation he had with Elvis about Elvis’s live performance. Elvis apparently was noticeably upset and said, “I think I’m a pretty good live musician and vocalist but all I need to do is go out and shake my hips and everyone screams at the top of their lungs”. Many people know this but during Elvis’s final couple of months he was very depressed and highly medicated by the request of Parker because Elvis would be so reluctant to go on stage due to people wanting to see him for his sex appeal rather than his music.
Colonel Tom Parker also knew some people loved Elvis but an equal amount of people hated him. So what he did was set up 2 offices for making merchandise, one being the “I Love Elvis” office and the other the “I Hate Elvis” office, writing reviews and producing shirts for both markets.
On a lighter note, another kind of funny story he’s told is how one of his summers working for Colonel Tom Parker involved him painting the rocks around his house for hours. The only parts of the job were him painting rocks and when Colonel Parker showed up at the house, he would have to sit down and talk with him over some beers and cigars.
Anyways all of this kind of shows how much Colonel Tom Parker influenced Elvis’s rise and demise. Parker knew the market, took advantage of that (as well as a bigger paycheck than Elvis ever saw). Parker was a marketing genius but a big asshole and Elvis was a musician who struggled to have his real voice heard.
Idle Caption anyone have a TL;DR

Nothing wrong with trap. Like Rock, HipHop needs well defined sub genres so that we know what we like and what to stay away from. Calling everything HipHop is bad for the entire genre.
So much music is "trap influenced" now it's getting irritating. Other artists who would normally not be making music in the genre are being forced to use it to stay relevant
i mean hiphop does have subgenres, just maybe not as well established in the publicsphere as rock genres, but then again, alot of rock just gets labled as rock, so maybe its a broader problem in music?
I dont hate trap but its getting annoying, just hearing it from MAJORITY of the artists depending on production and beats and some also get away with that BY TAKING THE CREDITS FOR THE PRODUCTION (ex: Pierre produced Die Lit but many people are saying Carti is good, even though it was pierre's production that was good. Carti didn't do all that much.) And trap is also gotten generic, people love listening to Uzi, Kodak Black, etc. The most generic trap artists.
@@abdoonyt9049 Your so lost from the trap scene dude no one is putting uzi on the same level kodak lmao Uzi is super fucking talented as well as Carti the man was making good classic rap songs at like 16-18 do some digging he evolved his sound cus he likes the art its not a cash grab and hes clearly taking risk. Also there would be no Travis Scott/Future pscyhedlic trap sound and hiphop would be a lot more boring wihtout it hiphop rappers like kendrick and freddie gibbs take influence from trap artist to hell andre 3k says Future is one of his favorite rappers
@@calebjudy3073 you could say so, but i have never stated once that any of those artists are bad. It's just getting boring. Travis Scott is extremely talented and he's one of yhe few artists that makes me keep my faith in trap. Also, the way kendrick and freddie use trap as an influence is not directly implement it in their music, it's subtle but it makes their music better. And so what if Andre's favourite rapper is future? He's not an objective criteria to make a rapper good. Future's music is and always was ass (will elaborate if you want me to). Most of your arguments are based on influence more than talking about their sonical talent. While I appreciate carti trying to experiment, his style was hot garbage to begin with, but that's subjective.

Don’t forget that artists like frank and Vince staples and the internet (and therefore Steve lacy) had their paths paved by or with Tyler’s help
Benjamin Kelkis Tyler is the one who literally made them who they are, it’s crazy that people don’t realize how much Tyler has done for alternative music in general in the last decade
Thats true
I can't even imagine how different music would be without Tyler
King Aesthetic Exactly. I'm not some huge Tyler fan, but he's at the very least, an icon in music.
King Aesthetic Vince isn’t alternative music at all?
I believe it was Nina Simone who said, “It’s not jazz, it’s black classical music.” Right on.
Yeah she said that
But fuck that, fuck inclusion Jazz is our classical music and it's sexy af
Nikola Demitri as someone from New Orleans, Jazz may have been invented by black people but it is the most inclusive genre out there. Jazz is for everyone
The saying is overused, but Nina Simone truly lived before her time.
You both missed my point. I didn’t mean to imply anything about inclusion, or any other political rhetorical BS. I posted the quote as a response to the “classical music is X, and all other music is X”, as a means of pointing out the complexity of jazz music, nothing more or less...
Also, Nina didn’t say that in a racist way, or exclusionary way, when she said it. It was in part, a response to criticism of jazz, and the predictable “classical music is the only good music” type of sentiment.
Nina was classically trained on piano when she was young, and would have attended one of the most prestigious music school/programs there was, but her color and sex/gender held her back. She played as a jazz musician because she was left out of the opportunity to play as a classical pianist. Jazz was a natural alternative, not simply because it was something you could be black and make a career out of (though obviously that played a part), but because it was/is a complex style that takes real talent, arguably the only genre that touches classical music in its complexity.
I know that’s a mouthful, but hopefully you get the point: I made the comment as a response to the comment about classical music, bc Nina made the comment to point out the depth and complexity of jazz.
I’m well aware jazz is diverse, I have studied it, and listen to quite a bit of it. Thanks for your points, it’s completely valid, but it doesn’t have anything to do with what I meant. I figured the context of the video was enough context for the comment, but it’s an understandable misunderstanding... ✌🏼

Well said
The classical era was the heigh of technicality in music? Lol, sure, except for literally every western art music movement after the classical movement (except for maybe some minimalist stuff). Busdriver has rapped over classical music in his song Imaginary Places. It was amazing so don't knock it until you listen to it.
3:49 Progressive rock / pop and heavy metal is indeed filled with trained musicians since the day one of prog. Usually the story goes that they have taken lessons and theory to get the technique. Then they have moved their own direction armed with musical knowledge how to get the ideas out and to the others.
To find new artist is more difficult. The format radios and no Music Channels on Tv, all is shattered all over the internet. You can suddenly bump into an artist who has dozens of millions wiews but have never heard of.
Indeed.

Love hearing your opinions keep the content coming
I think the comment about metal priding itself on technicality due to a deliberate ignorance of classical music is a pretty inaccurate statement. Most of the technical metal guitarists, ranging from shred heads like Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen to the guys in heavier groups like Meshuggah explicitly state a reverence and appreciation for classical music. Some metal players site speicifc symphonic passages as inspirations for solos and riffs. To say they are ignoring classical is patently false.
Jordan K Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen aren't what most would consider "tech metal". They're more "neo-classical" so yeah they pretty much wear their influence on their sleeves. Tech metal in general seems to focus more on percussion and complex song structure with an emphasis on dissonance and aggression, so the critique checks out.

Actually, there are a few metal bands out there which take a stab at trying to work at the classical music angle. The only major limitation (if you can call it that) is that most metal bands don't have enough instruments... frankly because electric amplification transmits such a broad spectrum of sound that one guitar takes up the frequency range of what used to be two or more ranges of classical instrumentation. In a way, that means you have to look towards chamber music as the true classical genre that spawned modern music.
In any case, though, there are bands out there trying for a layered sound with their few instruments that reach that sort of complexity. They tend to do so through jazz (such as Yakuza) but there are a few taking a stab at classical arrangement with their few instruments. Honestly, I think King Crimson is my go-to here. They certainly do stretch the limits of sonic diversity, but they were also doing their best to work on layering. Even before you hit "neo-classical" metal, I think King Crimson and their descendants are carrying forward that kind of complexity.
Very interesting.
These videos are amazing I just wish they were longer
trap as a genre is most definitely not the worst thing to happen to rap in itself, the genre just happened to align with the time where soundcloud rapping has hit an all time high, and the relatively simple format of most contemporary trap music has made it easier to vomit out mediocre and outright uninspired music than anything before it. If trap happened 10 years ago, there wouldn't have been even close to as much as an issue with it.

Leo Cachero Post trap = good kid m.A.A.d city
Possibly.
FAST AND B U L B O U S I don’t really see that. good kid brought back the rise of “conscious hip hop”, but I wouldn’t say it’s post trap. Trap was in its infant stages in the 90s then it came to its early rock stage. Like comparing it to the 50s 60s Elvis/Beatles/Stones Era of Rock. We were in an early 70s stage with some new genres of rap, and now we’re nearing the late stage with the punk era.
Bottomless Pit was definitely punk influenced
Someone will master Trippie’s style soon enough
Thank you so much for using my take ILY
Favorite segment, I would be fine with this being daily
Honestly you can rap over a classical sample, Imaginary Places by Bus Driver is probably the best case I can think of. That song is fucking fire
That comment about this music era being the best is too true. I used to be one of those guys who constantly complained about radio music being so uninspiring, saturated with the same shit etc. Then I stopped being stupid and went to find more music that might interest me; the funny thing is it’s not even hard. I don’t even dislike radio hits that much anymore because I don’t hear them non-stop. I simply have some trusted sources for new music (funnily enough theneedledrop isn’t one I just follow for the occasional entertaining video) and listen to a combination of new stuff that comes out (underground or at the very least not mainstream) and listen to classic albums that I’ve always heard about but never bothered to listen to. Funny thing about people who go on about music from the 90’s is that back then they didn’t even listen to everything they now love from that era; access was limited and interests were largely regional. In fact in genre’s like hip-hop, the east coast west coast divide meant half of what was being put out was outright ignored by the average consumer. Honestly people who complain about the radio in 2018 are just dumb because they don’t recognise how easy it is to avoid it.
In regards to the comment about classical, I'd say Jazz pushed the boundaries much farther than Classical did, and I think Tech death sorta combines elements of both genres to get its sound.
This was a really interesting video, thank you Fantano. You are a musical prophet of the 21st century
I hope hip-hop/rap music never die!!!😢
It'll only evolve like all music genres typically do over time.
Next wave could be rapping over lofi hip hop (Earl Sweatshirt And Chester Watson)
Edited *Chester* cause I spelled it wrong lol
ok so you touched on a topic that I am actually equiped to answer. as far as technical death metal not being as diverse in it's sound as classical music I fully agree. But you need to understand that what we define as "classical music" is a mishmash of songs that while old now are bound together under the guise of being similar despite a variety of different influences. flamenco is vastly different from bach for example.
I do find however that technical deathmetal does tend to lend itself to the same cliche'd fast riff vocals on some rythem lather rinse and repeat. it's worth noting that the vast majority of technical death metal guitarist are classically trained, yet they are constrained by both rampant elitism within the metal community and limited to distortion and the overall presence of single notes as a result. should you play a classical piece like "noche di estio" on an electric with distortion you will see a beautiful piece of music reduced to absurd noise. hence the limitations in complexity and range that is possible in classical music.

The dude who said trap is the worst is probably a Logic fan. And artists like Kanye and Travi$ Scott have used auto tune in a very artistic and creative way.
Tobie Olson The complaint wasn't auto tune alone, it was auto tune becoming prevalent. So the people who do use it well are drowned out by a wave of people using it as a way to mask a lack of ability, and giving auto tune a bad rep.

Rapping over classical music already happened! Oi Melon, do I have to remind you of Imaginary Places by Busdriver?
>Rapping over classical isn't viable
Tell that to Libera me from Hell.
Thoughts on Joey's and XXX's King's Dead remix?
Trap is amazing and fun, it’s also paved a way for some new heights! I’m 21 and prefer listening to Blackstar, Aquemini, The Roots etc. But here and there I like to just have fun and listen to the latest trap song. Shout out to all the “new generation” artists, because just like you and me. They’re just tryna get it
7:35 as a metalhead in college I cannot escape rap they burrough into every where here
I remember when every trap song had trumpet in the beats
You really don't think rapping over classical music could be a thing? That would be dope lmao
check out the artist Thee Phantom . I think you can stream his album Hero Complex on youtube
Libera me from Hell
That'd be so bad and pretentious
@SimplyleppA
Busdriver - Imaginary Places. Not really classical but vaguely in that direction
It's already happened on numerous occasions.
Regarding the comment about this being the best time for music availability, I get the point, but it misses the big picture. It's true that you can listen to and discover just about anything with the click of a mouse, but on the flip side this lends itself to a situation in which one is oversaturated *precisely because* of all of these options. You can listen to everything, but you never really get to listen to anything. It shapes your attention span. I was still a teenager before the iPod became a widespread phenomenon and, yes, I had to wait a month for allowance in order to go to the record store and by a CD or two, but that month was much more enriching in that I would spend my time listening to nothing *but* those CD's and taking in all of their layers. There was something new to discover in every listen. It's been years since I've been able to do that.
idk what melon's opinions on "visions of gandhi" by jedi mind tricks are, but rapping with classical music in the production MADE that album great
