I love how they focused on making a dungeon that looks like a lived space instead of just rooms and enemies like other games do
Oh yeah. Brilliant design, lots of love went into this dungeon!
"I'm probably going to jinx myself."
First enemy encountered in any way: Bell.
Checks out. :D
Haha yeah! That's just how it goes sometimes!
The repeating single stone in a chest is actually part of the lore. It's an anomaly. If you look closely you can see how the room repeats. Something happened there with the space/time fabric
Thanks for the insight! Someone else mentioned something similar. I wish there was a piece of lore that mentioned that specifically in relation to the RA, just to make it clearer.
There's a similar anomaly in the Bell Workshop. I thought the repetitive structure was super weird, but didn't put 2 and 2 together until I saw the stone chests. It's as if the rooms were smeared across time or something. Spooky! Also, Kurazarrh unfortunately didn't look up in that last Commons room, but it has an upside-down version of itself above it.
Around the 30:00 mark if anyone else is curious.
It's great seeing someone visiting the archive who hasn't seen spoilers. There's so much to see and do. I hope you enjoy discovering all the secrets.
It's been a real blast. Great experience all around!
"I wonder if someone took a dump on the wrong creature's head down there" LOL 🤣
too bad I cannot watch this! I'm in the same your situation: not visited the Archives yet and I want to go there with less info as possible 😄
Have a great exploration down there!!!
Oh yeah you should absolutely go in blind! Hope you enjoy the experience!! :)
Yeah, those sawblade locusts are no joke, that's for sure... I remember the base I had on a multiplayer server... dug a basement with a little mineshaft leading down, and wound up having a LOVELY little place for those damned things to spawn constantly... yeah, normally I'd be like "nuke it from space, just to be sure", but no nukes, so had to suffer... lol
They're pretty bad, though in an open space (or apparently one they can't maneuver in), they're not so bad. I'd generally rather fight a sawblade locust than a nightmare drifter or bell!
Leaving all this granite in those chest, how can you pass on such treasures! Great episode, this place looks so cool!
Yeah that granite is just too rich for us!! XD Thank you! The Resonance Archive was a blast!
A combat technique you can use in the archive:
(Not a spoiler, but still marking it)

Throw a torch or two outside of your inventory with the drop item button, then strap on your shield
Or if you're fighting locusts, you can just go with the limited light they give off
With our about being effectively iron, and most enemies being, at worst, deep drifters and bronze locusts, I just haven't felt the need to use the shield much! XD
In regards to the music, it's mostly just ambience but there's a certain event (you'll know it when you trigger it) where you'll want to keep the in-game music on from then on. Such a good track(s) from Lo-Phi.
I may have had the music down too far, because while I could hear it all right (mostly just ambiance), it didn't come through on the game audio.
Wow, this is actually in Vintage Story? I might actually consider this game for real.
Oh you definitely should! This is supposedly the first of several (possibly even "many"?) storyline dungeons to be added to the game.
I think a trunk at the top near the main doors might be a good idea. And get rid of all your clothing under the armor since it's not that cold where you are except at the top and, I'm not sure but the gambeson might be warm enough as a change of clothes--especially if a polar bear decides to surprise you up there. You can loot some of the clothes and put them on instead. I know many of the spoilers so I'm enjoying this "I don't know anything" take!
Armor, oddly enough, doesn't actually give you any warmth! @.@
@@Kurazarrh Gambeson really should!! It's all flax/linen!!!
Something I literally just did earlier today. Toss a torch on the ground, back off a bit, put your shield in your off hand, and then you can fight with light and shield.
XD I figured that out eventually, too. You'll see shortly! ;)
good stuff, really fun to watch your experiences in the archives. also so excited to see what comes next in terms of dungeons and story to be sure
Hey thank you! :D I really had a blast in this dungeon and hope 1.19 brings another one!
26:55 that track gives me a little bit of Zelda 3 dungeon vibes.
I like that VS allows you to actually move through smaller gaps when you crouch down. The Better Ruins & Ancient Dungeons mods have lots of those cluttered tunnels where that is useful. Also for healing, if you can find a quiet spot (which there seem to be many) you could probably just drop your armor for a moment to heal up.
Oh yeah, that music does feel very old-school! :D
I don't like dropping my armor entirely because... well, let's just say that I've had BAD surprise run-ins with the higher-tier drifters when I thought I was safe enough to heal up! XD Though oddly, I don't think I've had such an encounter since I started the Guide series...
44:00 Litham -- a mouth-veil which the Tuareg and other North African nomads, particularly men, have traditionally used to cover the lower part of their face.
Aha, very nice! Thanks for the definition! I don't generally think to look these up while recording episodes, and then afterward, I forget. XD
The Weird meatal Roots look like what sprouts out of the Tainted drifters
I always thought the tainted drifters had rebar sticking out of them!
Wow, this place looks amazing! I wish the "higher power claim" would lift after finishing the dungeon so we could grab those sweet sweet decor items
Me, too! I'd love to be able to decorate with them!
Hi Kurazarrh, thanks to your series I decided to buy Vintage Story and it's a blast, right now I'm trying to figure out how to efficiently find deep ores, tin and copper in particular so if you have any tips I would appreciate it. Thanks for the great series so far.
Hey that's awesome! Welcome to the game! For finding ore, check out episode 11. :)
Love the Archives. Bigger and more thought out than any dungeon in that other block game.
Oh yeah this place is amazing!
Those pipe segments looks like something that could possibly light the way. Guess I'll see what happens in the next episode.
In the mean time, guess I'd have to change to my brown pants and chair after all..
Great trip, interesting scenery the devs made
Hiya Kur! Always look forward to these episodes!
Hey thank you! Hope you enjoy(ed) it!!
Ahhh!!! I need next episode!!!! Loooooooreeee!!!!!
And those pipes looked like they came alive and attacked. Does the rot give all metal life? Not just machines? Or can it manipulate metal? Is it the same rot that made the drifters? Did the ark the traders talked about being people to the archives? What happened in the archives really? What did Jonas do?!! 👀 I hope this dungeon also gives us more timeline. (Maybe there already is. Haven’t seen all tapestries and read all notes yet)
Yeah I'd love to know more, too!
Man you got lucky with the drifter spawns, I had to fight through 30+ to make it to engineering!
Oh wow, you got mobbed! The place has been really empty and I was wondering if that's intentional or not. We did also go when rift activity was calm, so that may have had something to do with it, too.
@@Kurazarrh For sure, my activity was high for most of the time, that must have been it
Not sure if anyone has said this, but don't forget you can tame sawblade locusts with the spear. Makes for a nasty familiar!
You can, but only with the Hacked Locusts mod! I didn't want to tame one because they might be too powerful.
Holp crap that torch holder just yeeted itself down there like Ripley in alien 3 huh
Yeah it really didn't want to be in my backpack!
I wait so long for this! Let's gooo, resonance archive!
I had a wonder. I know you can't place things on the floors or walls, but what about on the tables? Like placing a crock on a table to get food out of? Also, put stuff in non-destroyed chests to empty inventory? Also, while fighting, to be able to equip your shield, maybe throw a torch on the floor? I like one of the other comments about wearing no clothes under armor so you can equip any clothes you find! Thanks for the video!
Someone else said you can use the tables, but only if they have at least one thing on them and as long as you don't remove all the items from it! The non-destroyed containers work, but most of them aren't in convenient locations. I'm thinking we'll just come back and ransack the place afterward!
best way to start my Monday! Vintage story guide!
:D
So glad you are doing the archive. i have also not watched any spoilers on this as i wanted to see you do it.
Oh wow! I hope it's living up to your expectations! XD
@@Kurazarrh so far so good :) Looking forward to Friday's video
This place is designed to equip you for the boss while looking lived in and abandoned.
It does seem that way! Though you'd probably need to take a break and fix some of the armor if you didn't bring at least bronze armor yourself.
It'll be cool if you could make repaired versions of all this stuff. I think edging towards steampunk technology with a little automation in that direction would be awesome. Water pumps. Central heating. Pipes. Can look awesome
Oh yeah this is all really neat stuff! I think central heating is a little beyond what Tyron has planned, but who knows? Maybe there's more to steam power than meets the eye!
A delightful series, thank you, Kurazarrh, it's very interesting to watch how you carefully make your way, looking into each box)) I'm looking forward to the next series! Good luck in the Archives
Thank you! :D
Excellent video as always. Thank you for continuing this series, always a blast to watch!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Ooh, I didn't see those ovens down there! If I get desperate maybe I could cook up some pies... if the game will let me roll out the dough on one of those filthy tables.
Not sure if it'll let you make pies on those tables! But the ovens will probably work, since you're not "placing blocks" when fueling them or adding your pies!
Keep up the good work your videos are really chill
:) Thank you so much!
I think u can put stuff in the ceramic vessels dispite the claimed area!
You can! I've tried it. ;)
Love this! I have never seen or heard anything about this dungeon (?)
I would totally think that theres something underneath all the coal, like a hidden chest or something, it just looks like that to me.
Even if all the enemies where gone, I dont think I would dare to go down there alone, lol. Super excited for the next one!
The place was a lot safer to explore than I expected. I thought I'd get mobbed the instant we got down there!
I feel like you should be able to restore all those ruined weapons, or maybe with them, learn how to forge some yourself with maybe parchment.
Yes !
Yeah definetely. It would be really cool to either be able to repair them, or smelt them for materials to make your own from scartch. Claymores, bardiches, maces and all that.
Agreed on the learning part. I even think they should gate the iron and maybe even steel working behind various types of ruins that you have to find first to learn how to process that stuff. After all it took humanity a long long time to even figure out how to properly work iron. Meanwhile we just skip past the bronze age like it's not even important.
The ruined weapons really feel like just another version of the scrap weapons we have, just better-ish. Their durability is abysmal for the damage output they do. For so little durability they would need to do something like 10 dmg instead of the 4.5 they do.
I remember when Tyron introduced them in the devlog they seemed more like a power weapon in Halo, high damage but low ammo. So the player really had to choose between using it to deal out the pain, or keeping it as a rare and pretty wall hanger. With their current stats, they're just a wall hanger unless you're desperate.
Yeah, when Tyron said there'd be powerful, ancient weapons, I was like 😍 and then when I saw them I was like 😑.
You could consider them like the weapons in the recent Zelda games. More like ammo than reliable tools.
But for me? They belong in a museum!
The Resonance Archives is quite the warren: lots of side-rooms, including some extremely large and twisty ones, and a couple of bona fide hidden rooms (which you fortunately don't need to find to complete the puzzles). My favorite room, from a world-flavor perspective, is probably the one you found with the multiple chests that each have one chalk in them; if you take a good look at it, there's something odd about it.... things must have gotten quite strange around the time of the big disaster, whatever it was. :D
Yeah, I can't tell if it's supposed to be weird like that, or if it's a generation issue. There appear to be a couple places at the edges of the dungeon that have lots of repeating sections, and I can't tell if the game is messing with me or if it's a glitch! XD
@@Kurazarrh I'm sure it's deliberate. I went through the RA on multiple saves in creative during the development snapshots, and those rooms are always like that. There's some hints in the various text snippets that time and space got a bit wonky during the big catastrophe. I also like the way the metal piping starts to proliferate and attack the other furniture... :D
@@AnotherJRB Ahaa... I knew about time and space getting wonky, but I think they should have added a scroll or something in the RA where someone talks or complains about the messed-up parts of the structure.
fun fact. you can use 1 tuning spear to befriend an UNLIMITED number of friendly locusts without losing durability, all you have to do is hack an already dead locust, and it will revive it at full health and an ally, having multiple ally locust will start a civil war between them though.
extra points if you have a pile corrupt locusts for the extra damage/health.
(cant hack a dead locust if it was already hacked prior)
Wait, you can just hack a dead locust??? Wild.
@@Kurazarrh sure can, great too since locust corpses take so long to despawn. (On my save, I have a locust nest in a locked room under my base which I use to stock up on lil buddies)
The urge to spoil is strong with this one.
I can barely wait for the next one!
You can upload for Tuesday and Thursday too, yea? ;D
I really want to see how you puzzle this out!
Haha, you'll have to wait and see! ;}
@@Kurazarrh :P
Spoiler for the resonance archives:
.
.
.
Can't wait to see his reaction, when he has to fight 2 sawblade locusts in that really tight mine. That slow build up to the bell encounter should also be exciting to see :D
it would have been really cool abd scary if the large entrance doors closed behind you once you entered. but i guess they don't, to prevent new players from getting stuck. i guess a "are you sure you want to enter?" screen could help, but might break immersion.
With how unforgiving the game can be if you can't get your items back when you die, I'd rather not get stuck in the dungeon. Plus, it wouldn't work well in multiplayer unless it was instanced or something.
Awesome love the play through. I knew you would realize ladders and things are worthless. But no spoilers Keep going. :)
Haha, thank you! And thanks for holding back on spoilers! ;)
Wow, amazing dungeon Kurazarrh and it is only just beginning. I am excited to see you work your way through it butterflies and all. That is the best part btw. I hope you thoroughly enjoy yourself delving this very spooky dungeon. P.S. Careful of falling the first small jump you made scared the hell out of me.
Oh yeah this place is gorgeous! :D
HAHAHA, i came across one of those scorpion spider things, i was only 20 blocks deep and turned a corner, LOL. i was wearing improvised armor. I did "not" last long, LOL
Im now too scared to dig in this game because of that. LOL
Oh yeah, sawblade locusts are vicious! Without serious armor, your best bet is to just run away! Or, if you're feeling adventurous, they can be kited and brought down with a bow.
Who passes up a library in a super secret resonance archive? Gees
I wouldn't, but we couldn't get in!
I want to restore and live here
Would be neat to be able to do that once you complete everything there is to do, though you'd have to contend with noisy, drifty neighbors...
I'm guessing the machine pumps the glowing liquid around to act as lighting? Maybe?
We'll have to find out in the next episode! ;)
I kinda want to see what's in the library
And that's one reason why we're here! :)
Are those columns chiseled or actual blocks?
Pretty much everything in the Resonance Archive is chiseled, though there are some special blocks, like the carved acacia, that are new blocks entirely.
@@Kurazarrh well boo. Those would be perfect in my dwarf build. Do you think they could be copied using the chisel tools mod?
nice content, turn on the coal in the boiler.
No spoilers!
Might just want to take off all your clothes just so you can grab a few more things in those freed up slots
Yeah, I'll probably do that at some point!
@@Kurazarrh I know me. I have to collect one of everything. That's why I can't play Pokémon. It becomes an issue haha
This game looks really cool but the animations and combat seems terrible at least for now
1.19 is bringing about some changes to how animations work, including a first-person view with arms and such (and some magic to keep the camera out of your character's head when in 3rd person mode). I'm also hoping to see some updates to smooth out combat, but once you get used to it, it's at least serviceable.
Ah okay that sounds promising and the animations shouldn’t be much of a problem as this is clearly meant to be first person mainly but it looks just as bad as the combat in Minecraft nearly which is my biggest gripe with that game. May have to wait until it’s more complete haha
@@aaronhughes7573 Well, I'll fully admit to you right now... that other block game's combat is WORLDS ahead of Vintage Story's in terms of feel and user-friendliness...
OH damn this must be pretty bad then looool. Its a shame because the atmostphere, crafting, survival and models for the player and particularly armor look very good!@@Kurazarrh
@@aaronhughes7573 To be fair, I do like most but not all of how archery and throwing weapons are implemented. I just don't like how the sword swings are timed. I actually answered a question relating to this in a video, but I think my response is in a video after this one.
