FAQ:
- What do you mean by "local area"?
Local means anywhere you are able, or willing, to go on foot (or bike or wheelchair).
- Can we use transport to get to the bottom of the mountain?
Ideally not. If it's too far for you to walk to, find a smaller hill closer to you.
- But I live in the midde of the Alps / Rockies / Himalayas!
Hmm. Yes. Tricky. Maybe try reducing the size of your "local area" until you find something you're willing to climb.
- What if the highest hill near me is private property?
Just climb the highest point you can get to.
- But I live at the highest point in my area!
Ah yeah. Hadn't thought of that. Don't share a photo of your house on the internet if you don't want to...
What if I live in one of the flattest cities on the planet, Lahore Pakistan.
My highest point in my local area is up my street. It's 382 ft. tall and it's around 5 minute walk. So should I go for that or a more hill like hill?
Hmmm the highest point is the top of the closed landfill.... Coastal Florida is a bit of a sandbar.
Haxxx5 I guess climbing Urk wasn’t much of a challenge either, so I’m sure that’s valid.
I live in NL (actually near Urk, I think you passed through the capital of Flevoland on your trip to Urk). Should I go to the lowest point instead?
Highest point near me is a landfill. Prepare to be underwhelmed.
Cries in Netherlands ;). Although I think the nearest 'peak' is actually at a fairly nice spot here.
Have the same problem. Closed off for me, don't and know anybody working there. So I'm taking this challange to mean "Natural Mediocre Mountain"
You win.
Is it Mount Rumpke?
Same here in Jax FL. Its also showing buildings as topographic here...
RIP anyone living near Everest.
😂😂😂🤣🤣
South Sister, at 3145 Meters is the highest piece of land in my local area, but that’s probably too much, considering there’s a glacier up there, so I’ll have to find something more mediocre.
Rob Norris it is the mediocre challenge... make a video and say I would clime xxxxx mountain, but that’s not mediocre enough
Cerro el Plomo is the highest point nearby my city at 5.424m. A frozen mummy was found there, so that means its kinda reachable by foot??
That's Literally like every Nepali person 🤣😂😂
I'm screwed… I live in freacking Switzerland, there are no mediocre mountains XD!!!!
I feel your pain. Middle of BC, Canada and even the local small hills are significant!
I'm not as bad as you sad sods in Switzerland, but I am in Oregon, US and have a gorgeous butte (Skinner's Butte) 20 min away, nothing mediocre for me either.
Same. Nearest one is the Stockhorn... 2190m... and im on the north side.... 1:50 to the start of the trail. I think I can do it in 1:30. Then comes the ascent. ab Oberstocken: Oberstocken-Vorderälpital-Baachegg-Stockhorn
Direct ascent: 4 h 15 min.
1'985m height difference.
Oh god im so fucked.
Amsterdam. Highest point according to that map is 17 meters above sea level.
There is always a mediocre place higher than the soroundig
Laughs in Dutch.
Then cries, as the map just shows a nice even blue of between 2 and -2 metres.
The highest point near me is my front doorstep... my house is on top of the small hill!
Same same... it would be kind of ironic just sending a picture of the lawn.
My house is actually fairly high up. I have a ski resort close by, and my house is higher.
I live in a multi story building on the city hill, so my flat is higher than the highest point here.
Wow climb the doorstep
NOICE
I live next to Mt Blanc, so I'll pass on this challenge this time, I guess.
Perfectly mediocre what do you want???
Coward!!😁 No, I don't blame you 😊👍
Just limit the area. Remember: No motorized transport. So it could within easy biking distance from your home.
@@57thorns Biking to Mt Blanc... hmmm... not a bad idea. Never tried it, but I guess I should at some point.
I live in Les Houches, so could say Prarion at just shy of 2000m or turn slightly east then Mont Blanc at 4810m
I have been giving guided tours to Leidschendam Mountain to foreign guests for the last thirty years, and yes, that is actually true. I have had visitors from Sweden, Japan, America and Australia. However, the visitors tend to be underwhelmed. It is an old dune remnant in Zijdepark, next to the Leidschendam shopping center. It is 2 meter high, and it is the only place in Leidschendam that is significantly above sea level. That is, if one considers 2 meter significant.
This is exactly the kind of thing we are looking for
Guess ill climb the rail embankment nearby a whopping 2m.
I live below sea level.
Their will always be a mollhill you can stand on
Go to the sea then :)
-2 m is still higher than -10 m. There is always a highest point
maybe search for the lowest point instead?
Do you live in the Qattara depression? Because I live in crippling depression lol
Can I just hand out some praise to you for being conscientious about those with mobility issues? You are a good person. You go to great lengths to include everybody. Keep up the good work.
Mediocre mountain climbing! A new sports discipline in these trying times
Brazilian here, we aren't under a lockdown but I'll be missing out because we really should.
Absolutely the right thing to do. Sorry I picked a bad time for you in Brazil, hopefully we can do something later in the year instead, when things have improved
@@TheTimTraveller Can't wait to walk to the busiest avenue in São Paulo, which I assume is the highest point in Downtown SP.
😂This is brilliant 😂 We live in the really flat area around Lincoln so should be a challenge to find any slight slope. Looking forward to it!
Same here! Going to be very mediocre for us.
I live a brisk walk away from a ski resort..... but... it's a really mediocre ski resort.... well.. calling it mediocre is kind of playing it up....
Its perfekt
climb steep hill!
@@crisrose9707 We don't have the necessary mountaineering gear for that epic task 😂
I live near to the Vaalserberg...
but someone has already made a video about that. The only problem is I forgot who...
then go to the Botrange in Belgium. 15km south of Eupen. you can combine both and got the two highest mountains of two countries in a sitting. that's at least my plan when belgium opens for everyone on the 15th.
@@domestik834 But ghe rules say I can't use motorized tramsport. Cycling is a bit too far for me. I've been there tho. Before Covid-19 Oused to hike around Baraque Michel a lot
@@jeroenl8352 if it was 5k less, it would be doable.
I don't know why I am so excited 😅.
Never thought of searching for the highest point in my area, I am off to finding out.
You are an absolute star, Tim. Your voice is so chipper it would put a smile on a corpse! Please keep up the good work!
Oh yes, I've been waiting for this! I'll see what I can do about the fancy dress part to make this 'mountain' look any bit interesting :)
There is a pub at the top of my nearest hill. I’ll give it a go, but Tim’s challenge has set the bar pretty high.
Set the bar .. at the bar
I have a mountain in mind, I will have a nice afternoon tomorrow.
GO TIM! Hopefully you'll have a lot of stuff to edit and even more fun stuff to watch through 😊
I live on Shooter's hill, I can do this challenge and pick up some beers all within 15 minutes.
This will be fun seeing everyone's mediocre mountain, look forward to seeing the results
Competitive MMC could be an Olympic discipline. Points awarded for best meandering, pointing out where your house sort-of-is and carrying the most inapppropriate bit of mountaineering kit there-and-back-again.
In Ireland, we're now allowed to travel within our own county or 20km from your house (whichever is further).
So you need the highest point within a 20 km radius :o) Better take 5-10 km, as you should be able to get to it unmotorised. I might walk to the aptly called Hoogte Honderdplein/Place Altitude Cent, it's a whopping 70 m height difference from where I live, but only 3 or so I'm.
I did a trail run on my county’s largest mountain yesterday. There’s a spectacular view on one side, but that’s not the highest point; the top is actually in some guy’s backyard.
I’m going to take a picture of the fence!
You can try and ask him if you can take the picture in his yard!
Not in WV so unfortunately won’t get any blessings from Mountain Mama
Soo the highest point in Wisconsin,USA is a place called Timm's Hill. It's relatively flat to the surrounding area,so it definitely fits the mediocre category. You don't actually climb or even walk up it as it is in the middle of a forest. You drive to a park and the only thing you see is trees. If you want to see anything you can climb a lookout station that was once used to spot forest fires.
Well on the plus side it's got a great name
In Chicago, and I'm going to take the "have to walk there" comment to heart and pick the "highest" natural point in my neighborhood. Pretty easy.
Aha! I posted an event for a local hiking Meetup group much like this -- called it "local highpointing". We sent everyone out, starting from wherever they were, and had them tag the highest place they could get to under their own steam. Suggested trick to make it more "interesting": At any turn, take the direction that goes steepest upward. At a local maximum, where all paths lead downward, reverse the scheme, and follow the most steep downward path. Avoid going the same way twice. If that doesn't hit the actual local highpoint, after a while, just head straight there.
Indian here. Most lockdown restrictions have been lifted; however, cases continue to rise at ever-increasing rates. I sincerely hope things get better soon.
In the meantime, I do look forward to your video! Would be interesting to see all the Mediocre mountains submissions you get
Hi Ramith, yes sorry I picked a bad time for India. Stay safe, hopefully things get better there and we can do something later in the year.
Y no 'Helooooo'? I need the 'Helloooo'!
This is a mediocre comment...
Did anyone hear anything?😁
This is a mediocre reply.
And a mediocre witty thread following it.
Brilliant!
Living 2 meters below sea level. The surface is just as flat as a dutch pancake
Cathkin Braes in Glasgow here I come!
... As soon as I find a bike repair shop willing to fix my rear brake. I'm not cycling down the steepest hill in the city without rear brakes.
I live in a city built on a swamp next to the sea. Literally. The highest point within 5km is ~10 metres (~60 feet) above sea level. Climbing to the highest local point might mean walking to the street corner because the roads are slightly built up ~20 cm to help with drainage.
I might need to take rope and other climbing equipment.
Nice one Tim. I feel inspired toward some hilly shenanigans now 😁
Yay this is fab! Off to the highest point in Bolton! and also where everyone get there TV from in the north west uk!!
I live in the Black Forest, so I have a lot to choose from. But the absolute nearest and perfectly climbable by foot would be the Geigerskopf (435m), so expect a nice picture from there!
Instructions unclear. Climbed Everest
There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of ham radio operators who are into this sort of thing, through the "Summits On The Air" program. They have in-depth lists and maps of local high points. It's basically a contest to see how many mediocre mountains you can make radio contacts from/to. But viewers here could use their resources to locate high points near them.
www.sota.org.uk/
Highest point near Portland, OR? Mt. Hood.... Hmmm... Has the word "mountain" in it, so probably not in the spirit of the challenge. Also, too far away and I don't want to have to be rescued by a taxpayer-funded helicopter ride.
Highest point in Portland city limits? Willamette Stone Heritage Site. Sounds interesting! But it's 1,180 feet above sea level, and also a 4-hour walk from my house.
Highest point in my neighborhood? A golf course. Now we're talking.
Man, my area is depressingly flat. And the highest points are as far as I can tell either in an impenetrable forest, or someones private garden. And to be clear, we are talking about places being maybe 10 feet higher than the surrounding area. With a very mild slope.
I think standing on the highest point in our garden might be more impressive.
I'll go to the highest natural point in Kiel: the Wohlersberg, which is at a whopping 74.2m above sea level!
That bike ride I planned two weeks ago but have been putting off just turns out to go through the highest point in my local area - no more excuses!
Hang on to your hats, folks, because here is the gut-wrenching, nail-biting tale of my quest to climb the Most Mediocre Mountain in Selby ... draw the curtains, light the fire, make yourselves comfortable, and get ready for The Conquest Of Brayton Barff: twitter.com/stevieinselby/status/1276983020206133248
Well that gave me a good laugh; a saga to be sure! Definitely mediocre, but was it the MOST mediocre? I wish you good luck :-)
I've been waiting for this. You're on Tim!
I'm tempted, just had a look and found where the highest point is. just depends on the weather at the moment lol, back in England had all this lovely weather in May and now it is rubbish summer weather!
Hmm... looks like my own house is the highest point near me. That's convenient.
Lol same.
Perfect! I was always wondering where that large hill with All the trees was in south west Edmonton!
Darn, didn't see this until July. The nearest high thing I can walk to is... The shopping mall. Topomap calls it 43m, which I doubt because the river is supposedly 50m asl, and topomap says the river is 13m. But it is the highest point for 2km from here. 4km away is a new overpass at 67m :) and 33km away is 1000m, but not walking distance..
I'm in central Alberta. It's so flat here, one can see their dog run away for three days.
I looked at Alberta on the map he linked.
It seems to be quite hilly to me.
- A Dutch person.
(The entire area where I live is marked as between -2 and 2 metres.
In Ireland, we're now allowed to go anywhere within our county (or at most 20km if crossing county boundaries).
I live in the flattest county in the country. Its not the lowest county, but it has a prominence of a whopping 50m. Fairly sure it won't be the most mediocre but in a fairly hilly country it'll be comparatively pathetic
Since the highest point near me is the top of a landfill, I think I'll skip it.
You think you'll *skip* it?
I'm sad I missed this :(
Will it be happening again soon?
I’m in a valley and none of the mountains have names so I guess me and my friends will get to name it
That sounds underwhelming at first, but naming a mountain is actually a cool thing, not many people get to do that.
It seems very unlikely that if it is an even modest rise around the local landscape and it has something vaguely peak-shaped nobody has named it.
Gstrangeman96 nope every lake and pond has a name but not the mountains
As far as I can tell the nearest highest point I can walk to is quite near, very doable, but looks to be... a footpath between a small wood and the M5 motorway... a whopping 290ft above sea level! Might save it for the Pathetic Promontory challenge...
While I'd love to join you, the highest points in my municipalty is the landfill and the second highest is on a private estate sooo...
We’re excited as a family of grown ups to do this may be a very mediocre mountain indeed but this is going to be great
I live in the Alps!!! Only big beautiful mountains here Tim!
There must be a rubbish one locally? One so insignificant it doesn't even have a name?
Genius idea! We're going to attempt to scale the highest mountain in Windsor (325 ft / 99 meters)
Just one meter shy of being to impressive. Perfect.
Hmm. According to that map, the highest point near me is part of the water surface of Millwall dock. Not all of it, just one part, which, of course, is around six feet lower than the surrounding land.
I went on a bike ride to the highest local point today. It was a beautiful day and the birdsong was wonderful.
Our family lives in the Canadian Rockies...but will find something in town... near a pub... because climbing mountains is hard work and makes you thirsty...lol
I'm from the Philippines, and its OK now to go around the country. If you have a car that is, as public transport is still off.
The highest point within the central area of my city is 73ft (25m?) above sea level...and only about 200m from the river that is at 20ft (6-7m) above sea level. Just a few kilometres out of town are some areas that are more than 20m below sea level...it doesn’t get more mediocre than the fens of England...
Ummm... the Dallas river valley has two ridges of highest ground, which are where we put all the TV antennas on major roads. And actually climbing the rock Ft Worth is built on would be impressive, and probably illegal.
The highest hill near to me is all of 39.39m / 103’ above sea level. It’s underneath a hospital.
I don’t much fancy going there anytime soon.
I’m also fairly sure that includes all the floors, as it’s a tiny spot of red on the map, surrounded by 5m terrain.
There was a barrow mound, but they bulldozed that for a car park. Hooray, culture!
The next closest in height is 13.1m / 42’. It’s a bridge footing, and that’s the built-up height.
There’s a reclaimed dump at 10.97m / 36’. It’s closed for COVID-19.
The high point of the county is an hour distant by car, 19.81m / 65’, and closed for COVID-19.
Does standing at the highest point of a lift bridge span count as a mediocre mountain?
If only my neighbour still had that pile of mulch!
The topographic map gave the highest point in my city as being the roof of the hospital, which is otherwise on completely flat terrain. It is not infallible.
If I knew about this I could have wandered up the highstreet & had an excuse to buy some plum bread.
Basically, The Highest Point in my local area are the garbage hills and they are also the naturally highest elevation, so, never mind, I am better at home.
If it's too flat can we MAKE our own mountain? Thinking get a couple of bin bags, fill with soil, climb (after lots of practice, maybe take a course in mountaineering first, just to be safe) and on reaching the summit, plant a flag? Bit worried that oxygen will be required two bin-bags high.
I've just had a look at topographical map and... it appears we live at the highest spot for about 5 miles around us. You can expect a picture from our back garden. Maybe stood on a mound of earth
I'll be going to the highest natural point in my borough, at a mighty 35m. it's a lot closer than going to London's highest point and although technically not the highest bit of land, it is the natural highpoint rather than a mound built by rich people
I'm out cycling and running every weekend anyway, so I might as well go to Katwijk 🇳🇱 next weekend and get onto the highest point in Zuid Holland (again). It has a pretty good view as well.
Does 30km count as local? Is it okay to take the train for half of the ride? (until 1500m/2080m) the first few hundred meter are just boring gravel road.
Topographic-map told me that the highest point in my local area as literally the deepest part of the I live nearby too. Thankfully I'm a bit of a cartographer so I know where the true highest point is.
@tim: The map appears to indicate trees as the highest point, so i think i'll go to the wooldse veen, which is apparently the highest natural point here in Winterswijk.
Consider it done! I'll be off up the hill behind my house this weekend.
Shame I missed this. The highest point in my city is less than a mile from my house. Of course, it's a rise of only about 80 feet, but it's something, at least.
The highest hill near me that I am willing to walk to is extremely mediocre height-wise (only 120 m), but otherwise quite remarkable. It is a bunch of rubble from WWII piled atop a former Nazi military college, with a cold war era spy-installation on top.
Don't know whether this counts as mediocre.
So, I looked it up. To get to the highest point of the city (323 m, most of the city is really flat at 110 m) it takes 55 minutes to get there by bike and 35 to get back. Well, I guess I'm in for a fun ride :D
I am 1,90 tall and at one point I was the highest thing in the whole of Hampshire (England), when I stood on the Ordnance Survey marker on Butser Hill. My father in law has photographic evidence, but I only have some windswept memories...
The highest spot near me is a police transmitter site - so I guess I'll have to settle for the second highest point, which is doubly mediocre. I'm into it!
I was so happy to see the tweet and this video, so exited about showing my mediocre hill in my neighbourhood but, I’ll be out this time, because I am in São Paulo, Brazil.
Dude...... I live in Austria...... Need I say more?.... Ps... I love your channel.... 🤣
Ok, based on that map, I just found out the highest point in the city where I live ('s-Hertogenbosch) is in the middle of a lake... a lake called "De IJzeren Vrouw" (The Iron Lady)... named after the digging machine that was used to dig it out... in order to elevate the surrounding land as they were building a neighborhood there... Yep, the most mediocre mountain in my area is a hole that was dug in order to increase the height of the surrounding area... can it get any more Dutch than that? But this does mean, that I might just have to get myself a little dingy to partake :D
(Oh, in case you want to look it up, it's labeled on the map by the name of the park surrounding it: Prins Hendrikpark.)
The problem with topgraphic-map.com is that buildings show up as high points in red.
The highest mountain near me is an old man made dirt pile with some grass on it. a total of 10 meters in height while the lowest point near me is -6.5 meters.
Are we talking natural elevations only? Cause one of the highest in my area (Berlin) is made from the rubble left over from the buildings destroyed in the area during the last war, which was subsequently covered with soil and turned into a park. There's actually a few of these around here, some of them additionally on top of (what used to be) large above-ground bunkers. Related to this, there's also the question of former landfill sites. So, do these count?
Normally I'd say natural only, but the rubble mounds actually sound kind of interesting. So sure, if you'd like to climb one of those, go for it - I'm not going to disqualify you :)
I live at 23M above ASL, and the highest point around me within 12Km is 36M. So that's a mountain - to me anyway.
If anyone lives near Wendover, they should do a video from the "highest point of the Chiltern Hills". It is basically just a flat car park and was the most disappointing summit of my life.
Interesting challenge. In my case, I'm currently living at 550 m above zero, but the highest point in the local area (as in the same village), is at 2454 m. This is a challenge. (And the highest point I can see from my window is at 2677 m).
Damn! I missed out. I wanted to join!
I live in Belgium (between the highest point of Holland and the vennbahn) so the signal de Botrange is not far :(
Well, I'll have to wait for the next mediocre task
I can't be bothered to do this. I'm tired, I'm going up to bed. Hang on a sec...
Sorry, I'm not going to put a picture... because it's where my house is. Lol
Following the guidelines AS WRITTEN, I'm already here.
Context: I have trouble walking farther than 100yards(meters). Our building sits on a hill that slopes gently away from us in all four directions. So without motorized help, I'm not going far, lol.
BUT, I live in Las Vegas NV. Which is in a valley, with rather talk mountains all around. The highest is Mt. Charleston 11,000ft. The closet is Frenchman mountain, 6000about ft. Both can be reached in less than an hour by car. I can take a city BUS to the base of Frenchman. Bet you didn't know Las Vegas was so vertical, lol.
0:43 topographical maps dot well there goes my next 4 hours
Genius idea!
I live on a plateau so its flat here, but just by living here I'm already higher than the highest point in Holland.
The highest point in my town is on an army base, and the next highest has a radio tower on it, so I can't do either of those.
just explain them it's for Tim. They might even roll out the red carped.
There's a beautiful mountain with a great view about half an hour of walk from here that I can actually see from my window... but I'm a little afraid to go since the mountain has quite a few bears on it. May have to sit this out.
Awww go on, live a little...What's a few bears when COVID-19 could take you out at any time.
0:35 Ortles at 3905m.... Alps... damn it.
