    Have you ever considered curved steps instead of rungs? Ship accommodation ladders often used curved steps to make it easier to climb the ladders or walk down. The steps are covered with non-skid surfaces for better traction.

    we can access the platform not just to the back towards the ladder, and to the two corners, but also straight ahead.
    Anyway this midmount would be simply useless at our FD (due to the truck size) - we have three 100 ft rearmounts at our station, and since the ground ladders are on the Engines, the Tower Ladders don't have to carry them on board

    • @Firebuff101
      @Firebuff101 2 года назад

      You must be the only department that doesn't carry ground ladders on aerials... and the length of midmounts to rearmounts is comparable. In Pierce's case, the midmounts are actually shorter.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting 2 года назад

      @@Firebuff101 I take that as a compliment. Not in terms of apparatus layout, but apparently you didn't realize that I'm not even from the US - and I seriously used to struggle with English as foreign language a lot back in school.
      No, we're definetly not the only department not carrying any ground ladders along. It's the standard here, and I'm dead serious with that statement. 99% of Aerials won't have any ground ladder on board here. I don't say 100% as there are some very few unique trucks like Quints which might have a set.
      No, Tower Ladders don't carry any ground ladders here. Those are supplied by the Engines and Rescue Engines. Also the Tower Ladders don't have a crew cab, no water tank, no pump, no battery powered or hydraulic extrication equipment. All that comes from the Engines and Rescue Engines as well.
      Mid-Mounts are super rare here. back around 1980 one manufacturer built 14 of them and it took more than 4 decades before the next Mid-Mounts were built - they were presented to the public only weeks ago. The only reason why mid-mounts were built here at all was the demand to have a Tower Ladder with lower overall height when driving down into historic parts of the city, low archways, low underpasses etc. A decade later they came up with a different approach: keep the rear-mount, but put the cab further to the front and on a lower level. This was first done by fire apparatus manufacturers and some years later the truck brands offered this kind of low entry cab in their lineup right away. Thus the rear-mount Tower Ladder wasn't any taller than the mid-mount Tower Ladder although the ladder was above the cab. With the low entry cab the mid-mounts became useless. The area they were designed for also showed the biggest issue: the overhanging bucket at the rear was in the blind spot, awful when maneuvering in tight places.
      Back when I posted the comment we had all 3 types of Tower Ladders in my home town, all 3 at the same station:
      1) A 105' rear-mount Tower Ladder with standard cab
      2) A 105' mid-mount Tower Ladder with standard cab (it was 1 of the 14 mentioned previously)
      3) A 105' rear-mount Tower Ladder with low entry cab
      Since then even more solitions and approaches became popular. Like to shorten each ladder section and put 5 instead of 4 sections to add up to 105' and thus get a shorter truck length. And all-wheel steering got just as popular as the low entry cab did
      The most compact Aerial Platform layout available here is a rear-mount Telescopic Boom where the platform isn't overhanging at the front or rear of the truck, but it's right behind the cab
      My personal favorite for a well working standard first due Aerial:
      - 105' rear-mount Tower Ladder
      - articulated top ladder section
      - self-leveling ladder base
      - low entry cab
      - all wheel steering
      - low extending outriggers

      @@EnjoyFirefighting I'm not reading all that. I was simply making an observation, but thanks for the novel. Also, I'm not sure why not having ground ladders is a compliment.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting 2 года назад

      @@Firebuff101 why should I answer if you don't read ...
      Ground ladders would make the truck unnecessarily large. Too large to make the truck go around corners. That's why it's kept as compact as possible = reduced amount of equipment which is supplied by the Engines 100%. They're not missing on scene, just come with a different apparatus

    Are all midmount pumps like this? They are all electronic, and I can see major issues from that. Wouldn't manual controls be better?

    • @centralnewyorkresponses7887
      @centralnewyorkresponses7887 6 лет назад

      Armyconrad yes, but new technology has made things easier. If the power goes out in the pump, the whole truck shuts off.

      @ph11p3540 2 года назад

      Electronics overall are extremely reliable and well proven. Commercial/industrial electronics are not like consumer electronics by a large margin of quality. Extremely rugged against water, extreme cold, heat and vibration. It's mechanicals that usually fail first before the electronics fail. Face it, solid state beats moving parts. Anything breaks, just replace the chip from the main board. Simple. I worked long enough in industrial instrumentation to know better.

    Hello, my department acquired a similar vehicle, they gave us a demonstration of how to use it and all its components, but there were parts that it happened to them to indicate to us what they were used for, such as in the control panel of the truck's stabilizers, where A button appears that says: EPU, which they never told us what it is for, or when it should be used. Could you help us by telling us what it is for and when it is used?
