Big brain move: Windows is the safest operating system if you aren't connected to the internet
True, but at the same time, what if you drop it?
What about that OS that destroys itself when something is plugged in?
All OSes are safe if they NEVER have anything external put on them ... external programs specifically is what I mean ... and of course NO internet connection ... as long as whatever it is is certified virus free ... there's NO WAY it could get infected and have trouble OS issues

GNU/Linux is more secure because of the way package managment and privilege separation works. There are also reasons like modularity of system but the biggest reason is that most of GNU/Linux software is free (as in freedom). The reason why Windows is so insecure might be the amount of legacy code it has, but I'm not sure.
No legacy Windows would bei pretty safe.... Ofice dosent Need powershell.
Fun Fact: The vast majority of security flaws from previous versions of Windows are present in Windows 10 because that OS is built on top of the previous version. This is why Flaws in Windows 10 are often found in previous versions.

Nice job, Joe. People taking personal responsibility (like keeping the OS updated) is a real difference-maker. I met a dba last year who was running Windows 7. When I told him he was running a risk, he just sloughed it off as of no concern to him. My jaw dropped.
Before watching: I don’t think it’s the least secure OS, but the most targeted because most people use it.
After Watching: Yay! Something about MacOS, I’ve seen people take a long time to get a program installed. I think MacOS’s noob and security friendliness helps it stay a bit more secure. Some people just won’t install something because they keep getting told no. And for Linux, I think most of its security is not because of tech savvy users, but because of its repos. You get a lot of things from a trusted source. Of course it can probably be compromised, but I still think getting apps from these repos is both safer and easier than going online and looking for what you need.
Heartsalot it’s also based on DOS, which makes it even less secure...
In most ways Unix (macOS and Linux is based off of it) is better than DOS, and while Windows has improved in many ways over DOS and in some ways are better than Unix and Unix-like operating systems, they still have not been good at security at all...
Also when someone in your family comes with a game the copied from a friend in a flashdrive, chances are they will not unwillingly infect a Linux machine by double clicking a .exe file.

hahah Thio you were about to say "A shit load"
Yes. Windows is more insecure even if Linux becomes the most popular os.
Edit: it's architecture is more insecure than Linux because it has only two levels.
So windows stuff has access to either nothing or everything. Linux has more granular control over apps. So apps can for example have storage permission, But not network access.
I have totally no idea on how Macs work.
I want to know how this works.
Talking about macOS security, let us not forget about that one time root user password on macOS High Sierra is set to empty.
So 10 million people apparently still use Windows XP? Me gusta
Great video..please bring another
With every new version of Windows released since XP, they've added more security features
A lot of Windows security issues are often 'self inflicted' by the users. An example is running with an Administrator account all the time. Not only does an admin account let you run pretty much anything (even with a warning, a quick click and it will execute) but you can easily delete/move system files by mistake. It's much better to set your day-to-day user as "User" by removing the Administrator group from group membership. If you now try to execute a file requiring Admin privileges it will pop up a window asking for an Admin password (you can also right click the program and select 'Run as Administrator'). A little but of a pain I know but it can save something bad happening.
Also, if you run background programs that need a higher level of privilege (such as backup software) , think about creating a special user with higher privileges and a REALLY long and complicated password. Dont use Administrator as if you ever change the password the service will fail (usually hours later).
I think Windows is the only operating system with a registry
I mean, the GNOME desktop environment has dconf-editor, which I believe is quite similar to a registry.
@karel ss Configs are Linux's registry, but they are stored in plain text (which makes no difference).
That bow and arrow stock photo... Bwwawhwhahahaha!!!! Best stock-photo-fail I've seen in a long time! (Joe, great video BTW!)
If only virus writers were as inept as the guy holding the bow and arrow at 2:34 . Hint: the bow is upside down. That was more than a hint; that's the main thing wrong with it. Try hitting a target at any kind of distance at all with a grip like that! Actually, there are probably a lot of "wanna-be" virus writers who are that inept, but there are enough skilled ones out there to make life difficult for the rest of us.
But wouldn't you target Linux? That's what data servers use.
yeah but it usually isn't Linux that has the security flaw, it is usually due to a flaw in the software that the linux system is running. for example finding a vulnerability in Apache Web Server to get access to the files stored on that server
@HTB_For_Life not if someone is running an older version or an 0 day exploit is released
Because data servers have like 1000000 security measures.
Bernardo Negri actually linux isnt the problem its the software being exploited to gain sudo or root privileges
@@JoeyLindsay True.
Remember that those stats are from USERS and all of the other machines. Almost ever server, iot, and other machines use Linux. On Mac OS you navigate into the privacy menu in settings which is annoying but can be fixed with the terminal. Mac os and Linux require a root password when launching potentially harmful software where Windows only needs a Yes or a No. I don't think that there's an option for enabling password protection for the UAC
I believe you can with ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin in the Registry.
The biggest risk of an operating system is the user him/her*self.
A clever and educated Windows user is more likely to get not infected than a Mac user who clicks on everything without thinking.
No hate on Apple or Windows users intended.

Only thing I could not agree is Linux is not set it and forget it .
Recent Linux distributions are really easy to setup and maintain . I suggest you to try one to experience it . Anyway good video .

Yes people are waaaaay out of date on this view. From a standing start someone can have linux "installed" and be using it in under 1 hour. The quotes on "installed" is because with systems like Puppy Linux you just need to boot from external media and you are off and running.
Mine was a completely different story. To install Linux, it took about 2 days and some things still won't work.
Did the poll and it went straight to 100%
Thank You Thio
I know people who still use windows 2000 😏
After years of using Linux on the desktop I now use chromeOS , which allows me to also install and run (at native speed) Linux software - considering the basis/foundation of chromeOS is Linux, this is no mystery.
While most chromeOS users stick with browser based applications or Android apps that run natively on chromeOS, the option to also use Linux apps give it a broader appeal. These apps run within the (user) Linux container and are even more isolated from the other running apps (except for defined interfaces for things like copy and paste).
The most important part of chromeOS is the patch management which constantly keeps Chromebooks updated, without the users ability to block updates (unless they never reboot or logoff).
The other benefit of chromeOS is the baked in 2FA for accounts used on the Chromebook as well as U2F/Fido (yes, windows is finally getting there) .
It is a poor example to state that IoT implies insecurity with Linux. Most IoT devices are cheap crap without properly implemented Linux security (weak local admin account, hardcoded passwords, duplicated/static security keys, backdoors, weak ciphers or use of sslv3) but most importantly, once deployed, they don't get patched!
Also, you cannot lump all Linux into the same bucket of security/insecurity , because they are all customized by the distributor. unless you consider Linux to be the kernel , and then assess vulnerabilities based on versions of the kernel.
That said, I agree with the final assessment, user awareness/education is important to maintaining the security of any system.
Personally, I gave my wife, kids and mom Chromebooks and configured (non-SMS) MFA for their Google accounts. This has addressed almost all user and security issues that they would have.
(Yeah, I know this was long-winded but wanted to preempt the "common statement that ChromeOS is not a real OS"crap).
It can be said that it's secure without it being private. Using ChromeOS literally makes your entire computer into spyware.
@@uiopuiop3472 why do you say that? Is there no telemetry sent to Microsoft when you use windows 10 or Microsoft office?
With most apps on the cloud, what privacy do you think you have (or do you work offline/disconnected these days)?
If you like video conferencing, well, how do you feel about Zoom and it's privacy?....this list goes on.
If you want privacy from the OS or OS vendor, use Linux and Tor browser...and even then, good luck.

Another thing that makes linux more secure is, every linux distro has their own software repository, some graphical, some not. If a virus makes it into those repositories, it will likely be weeded out.
Windows Defender Logic:
1. Block my favorite game after few months using it daily. How to release? Change folder name.
2. Block my application I was working on and testing daily starting and stopping it countless of times, so it blocked entirely internet access to it. How to release? Change its folder name.
Both applications sit in my Programs Files 86 folder (dont worry, its user settings are stored elsewhere).

I've been exclusively using Windows Defender as my anti virus software for years now and have been happy with it so far. I know when I am downloading shady stuff and it''s caught the malware right away if it is present. I don't think I've had an actual virus in years but I also do a fresh OS install once every year or so.
Another one: backwards compatibility is probably what made Windows what it was, but more compatibility layers also means more points of failure. I'm not sure how much of a role that plays compared to the market share and stuff, but compatibility vs security is a bit of a pick-your-poison.
The main problem is that they never got the permissions issue fixed. MSDOS considered the right to read and the right to execute as the same. Because MSDOS was single user they didn't have the different rights for different people. If you run DOSEMU on Linux or wine on Linux, they fix the issue by confining the compatibility to it own subdirectory and not letting it access the full machine. Microsoft could have done this but elected not to. This is where most of the problem springs from.
@@kensmith5694 So that's where that oddity stems from. Good to know!
The main security feature in macOS and Linux is this this: they will not run an .EXE file.
