Actually Chad depresses me when he talks about theory, It makes me realize how far I am behind as a player and I try not to get frustrated but when I hear him play I say oh sh.. hell !! I ain't going to never play like that 😆 everything he's saying is super correct He's an amazing player but I get depressed nothing against Chad. Thank you so much for all them knowledge you share with musicians. But I can't help thinking I'll never get there 😆
Man.... this outline is for a lifetime of improved practicing. I am a guitarist. I transpose the lines through the guitar and through key. I also take Chad's suggestion of going up by half steps, but I do that with singing the phrase. I do not go through all 12 keys. I usually just stick to the tonal range of my voice working them chromatically up and down for 5 or 10 minutes each practice session. I am optimistically hopeful that my ear/ability to transcribe instantly will have improved exponentially over the next couple years.
I always think about what your smile (and talk) reminds me of. And at least I got it - it's so close to John Hammond - one of the greatest men in jazz history. Love it.
Every single time I hear Chad LB play, I remind myself of the scene in Bird where Buster Smith says “what do you think about Yardbird?!” And throws his horn into the River. Chad is so damn good that part of me wants to hate him, but I can’t. He’s THAT damn good.
2 things. First off, metronomes. Practicing with a metronome will make your time metronomic if you let the metronome lead. You can practice in such a way that you make that lifeless metronome swing harder than Philly Joe Jones if you know what you are doing--I've heard it in person and it sounds WILD. Playing with a metronome, can help you develop your relationship to a steady reference point. That doesn't mean that you can't lay back, push forward, or allow your time to breathe. You control the time, the metronome is just a reference. Chad LB has an entire video devoted to time studies with a metronome that are often ignored--check them out. Big beat stuff. Secondly, ear training... can be a controversial topic. I've taken the contextual approach similar to what LB says here, but it's applied more broadly to key center instead of just chords. Been doing this for longer than a decade. Worth every damn day I put into, and I ear train everyday (even on vacations, road trips, the like). Put time into your ears and your ears will allow you to put everything into context FASTER. Phrases, lines, etudes, transcriptions--they all show up in your playing in more organic way. Technical studies without ears is wasted time. Ear studies without hands on the instrument is worth almost as much as time on the instrument (with ears opened and engaged).
Great tips! Your example of just using chord tones for your solo was awesome, and an encouragement that learning to play over changes nicely is attainable.

I must say though, that most people will never get this good (ear wise and playing) no matter how much they train.. Even if they train more than Chad. Even if X100 the amount he trained... Not trying to discourage. It's just honest truth.

I always tell people that the most practical and valuable skill I ever got from music school was my ear development. Fantastic video!
