That crackling sound during your outdoor distance test had nothing to do with your port connection(s). You were probably at the top end of its wireless capabilities & it was struggling to maintain clear connectivity/signal. Much like your phone will get broken audio/distortion when the signal isn't strong.
We thought that too at first, but we checked it at short range and still heard the crackle. That's why we cleaned the connections. All good after that.

We've tested it driving in the car with windows down. You can still hear our voices clearly, although there is a bit of wind noise too.
