Dave Allen one of the best comedians ever, passed away too soon.
I’m Australian, and as a teenager my wonderful dad and I would watch this together every week laughing our butts off, along with The Two Ronnies. It was our time, just dad and I and I loved it so much. He is gone now, December 2022, and I watch Dave Allen and my heart aches for my father. Miss you dad ❤
The legend that was Dave Allen
One needs to be able to laugh at themselves and everything - it does not mean being disrespectful. Dave Allen was fantastic.
Brilliantly said
If alive Dad would be 98 now as a child remember watching our black and white tv, curled up on the sofa listening to my mum and dad sharing laughter making me laugh not knowing why? Fond memories. 🎄👵🇬🇧
This was so groundbreaking back then........ You really NEED to look back to the 70's Irish history to understand the political situation, bombs going off left right and centre, people getting killed almost daily, then this guy shows up and rips the piss out of what the "troubles" were all about, religion, bigotry and all that it brought with it.
Dave Allen was great. Back then, comedians would simply tell one joke after another. But Dave Allen would tell a funny story. That's what comedians do today. Dave Allen was ahead of his time.
Dave Allen was raised as an Irish Catholic who realised that he had certain issues with what he was being taught. Later in life, he transferred his experiences into comedy.
You said he had no reverence to God, but at the end of every show, he said, "may your God go with you." ✌️
And the RC Church in Ireland at the time was incredibly powerful, corrupt, and abusive.
The horror stories of the Church's true practises in Britain and Ireland are only just coming to light in society. Lots of people are waiting for the whole truth and the prosecutions of those involved. It's heartbreaking what people of religion have done to others. 💔 From Yorkshire (I've Irish in my family).
The key part of his sentence was “your god”. It wasn’t referring to any particular imaginary being but to whichever of the thousands of man made gods one happened to imagine existed.
Not unlike George Carlin
@@marcusfridh8489 Carlin was quite tame in the early 70's compared to Dave, and it's very possible that he would never have been allowed to do this in the US at that time...
Dave Allen had no issue with People having Faith, BUT he was definitely critical about 'Religion' and its effect on People !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave Allen was one of a kind and he is sadly missed may his god go with him
Back in the mid 80's instead of watching the news at 11pm Local FOX would air reruns of Benny Hill, Paul Hogan (yes he had a similar show) and Dave Allen in a rotation. Good to see Allen's comedy continues to entertain.
So glad you enjoyed and understood the British humor. We are pretty dark when it comes to comedy. We have been through so much it's better to laugh
British???? Oh dear 🤦♂️
@@philipmcdonald7370 Its funny but, although he is Irish, I often think of him as British, as to a lot who watch Dave.
I’m Australian and have always known that he was Irish. And I grew up,watching him with my darling dad as a teenager in the 70’s and was always fascinated by his half missing index finger. But British and an Irish humour is just the best and we were raised listening to the Goons in the car with our dad. My absolute love for your comedy has been passed to my son who has a massive collection and also adores it. So whether British or Irish, you guys are the best (and Aussies aren’t too shabby either). My favourite is Red Dwarf, oh I love that and Monty Python 😂. So many!
He is not British
@@karenglenn6707 Red Dwarf up to series 8 was STELLAR!
He was my neighbour in Londin in the 80s. A nice, quiet but clever man.
The blessing joke- He thought the priest had said 'In the name of the father, son and into the hole he goes'
Nothing to do with an oily goat then?
@@groovygregsmithOr Gladly, the cross eyed bear. 😂
It's even funnier when the Hosts don't get the joke because he talks too fast.
@@groovygregsmith lol
He was Irish and brought up as a Roman Catholic before he became an atheist. He was more anti-organised religion and being told what to think - he always finished his shows with "Good night, and may your god go with you".
The best comedian EVER!!!!!!! Love he always has his own jokes, mostly religious too. So sad he passed away with cancer. RIP Dave 💔💔💔
I love watching you guys enjoying yourselves laughing at such great comedy, both you and the comedy make me laugh.🤣🤣🤣
We were so happy to get a VHS recorder so that we could watch back the bits we missed from laughing so hard originally..He was a total genius
The saddest thing is that he would probably not be able to get away with his skits today.. very sad.
He was the best
Girls, your laughter is so infectious, welcome to my world. Dave Allen was a great favourite of mine and my lovely late dad's many decades ago, we would howl laughing at his sketches, his jokes his sense of humour was ours to a tee. We always settled down to watch the show together. I broke my heart when he died on my youngest son's 17th birthday, 10th March 2005, he went to his maker with a cigarette in one hand and a whisky in the other to join my dad and all our Irish relatives and his too. May his God Go With Him. God's Own Comedian he was known as, Dave Allen: God's Own Comedian, rather fitting end for this comedy genious would'nt you say? Plenty more episodes to see on her that he did and documentary on his life too.
Oh that must be bittersweet for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching that with you, your laughter made me laugh 😂😂
hi guys great reaction love dave allen very funny 😅
Dave Allen was brought up as an Irish Catholic.
Dave Allen, though a genius comedian is not British, he was Irish. Calling him British and putting a union flag on your thumbnail, could piss off a lot of Irish people, and I'm saying that as a Brit.
Yes very offensive
Depends how you look at it. His comedy did come from the BBC, so it is technically British
Anthony, I had exactly the same reaction, and I'm English! 🇬🇧
He held British citizenship as his mother was English.
True - but he his show was shown in Britain and was censored in Ireland! A prophet doesn't have honour in his own land. So perhaps in Britain he was valued more? A brilliant intelligent comedian!?
It's taken all these years for Americans to get the humour of British/Irish humour, it can't be beaten.
Dave Allen was an Irish genius not a British one. One of the funniest Irish comedians to appear on British TV.
I'm glad of anything you could enjoy; Dave Allen was my favorite comedian.
he's awesome
Hilarious!! 😂😂😂
He’s Irish. To call an Irish person British is a huge insult. But we’re a funny lot and forgive you. 🇮🇪
Depends if they are republic or northern Irish obviously
He was a genius
I remember as a little girl in the sixties my brother and I would sneak down to the landing of our staircase and watch Dave Allen, Benny Hill, and Monty Python witch came on at 11pm.. My dad usually caught us though and sent us back to bed! It was so much more risqué than anything you found on American or Canadian tv!
Dave Allen on flying Is well, worth viewing.. P S you guys make me laugh out loud just watching you👍👍👍👏👏
7:06 He's a real Vicky Kemosabe...
👌👌💯💯
Impeccable accuracy from youtube auto-captions there
It's embarrassing to provide such a faulty system - it reminds me of present day education.
Girls didn't dare to get some ot it. :D That was really funny !!
Very true
I have no time for a God that would not enjoy Dave Allen being among the people at the great table. Good banter takes the edge off eternity. Any immortal conscience would know that. :)
I was sat in church once and decided to flick through the bible and see what advice god had for me. I stopped it at a random page and the passage was called "poison in a pot", out of all the things god could discuss with me he decided to talk about my wife's cooking 🤷
How does anyone know that Dave Allen wasn't put on earth for a reason?God is meant to be all powerful, etc,so they assume heade a mistake?🤔
@@Trebor74 All Gods have made mistakes. The vast number of which are not around any more. It's almost like they only exist and conflate in the exact same historical pattern that us human beings have to endure in.
"HEADE [make] a mistake". 😵💫
@@Trebor74 Ahhh... What a burn! 😂😂🤣
10:40 The Father , the son and into the hole he goes
You 3 are beautiful! Thanks for the laughs over Dave.
Your beautiful laughter is priceless. This humour was never meant to be offensive. But as all humour should, it makes us think, and for a moment, be what we are, and not what we are told we should be. Keep smiling and laughing :)
Dave Allen was not an atheist but an agnostic, I think. The jokes he made were not about God but about people's incapability to interpret God's commandments, or intentions. Anyway, this is how I feel! I could see your joy when there were no contradictory feelings, and how you struggled with conflicting feelings when he said he was an atheist (which was a part of the stories!)
You should look into his background. He was one of my favourite comedians of that time. I knew he spoke the truth in the only way he could. From Yorkshire
True comedy, not the rubbish you get today. One truly brilliant comedian
You should watch his 'Airplane' session.
There is another video titled Dave Allen on Religion. Hopefully you will react to that one as well
Don't worry. God would love Dave. Look at the world around you and you can see that God has a sense of humor.
Tell that to all the kids who are born with terminal cancer and severe mental and physical handicaps, or the millions of starving, dying kids around the world. Oh and what about his wonderful natural creations such as tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes etc which have been wiping out millions of innocent people since humans walked the earth..
@@69woodys This is why I dont believe in God.
@@69woodys Like I said ... !!!
DEFINITELY!
@@69woodys More deaths have been caused by humans than nature!
Let me correct you Dave Allen is Irish not english. This tape must be about 45 ---50 years old.
I remember watching Dave Allen with my Mam who is no longer with us
Dave Allen was Irish 🇮🇪 not British 🇬🇧
Should check out GLASGOW'S kevin Bridges, Billy Connolly and Frankie boyle 😮🎉🎉🎉frikken brilliant muckeroos😂😂
Cheers troops 😁😁👍👀
He went to the funeral. He thought the priest said. In the name of the father and of the son and Into the hole he goes.
Apple is the old Anglo Saxon word for fruit, after the Norman invasion of England 1066 the Normans brought the French word for fruit which is fruit, after that the Anglo Saxon word for fruit minimised until it became the name for just one fruit, thee Apple
Irish 🇮🇪.
This was Dave Allen at Large
1971 to 1979.
If god made everything then he made jokes and laughter as well 😂
VERY TRUE!
DAVE ALLEN WAS FROM IRELAND 🇮🇪 NOT BRITAIN
I have a feeling that some of the very Irish British humour didn't register. Dave Allen was very popular in Scotland, a lot of whom have Irish ancestry.
he is not british he is from dublin in Ireland
He was IRISH, not british
Very funny man
Finally a video where they barely speak over everything.
I love the fact that the guy in this is dying laughing
Gideon refers to 'Gideon's Bible' which used to be found in many hotel rooms. "Into the Hole he Goes" rather than 'Holy Ghost.'
Dave Allen was Irish, not British, whether he liked it or not. The flag should be a tricolour, not a Union Jack.
Gideons book is a Bible, not complete, but used to be in hotel rooms?
'Into the hole he goes'!
Remember, if God made man in his own image, then he too must have a wicked sense of humour.
5:45 He has no reference for god? He is Irish. He grew up in one of the most religious countries in the world back then. Love your reactions.
It's that bloody nun outside again
That bit you missed was, instead of hearing "To the father, the son and the holy ghost", he thought they said "To the father, the son and into the hole he goes."
Funeral - "In the name of the Father and of the Son and into the hole he goes." 😂
May your god go with you.
That's an Irish man
He is not British nor is that the irish flag.
☘️🇮🇪
i knew you'd been in hysterics
Instead of saying "the Holy Ghost" the little boy thought he said "and into the holehe goes"
thank god i am a atheist.
I am German and to my shame i never heard of Dave Allen. I am Atheist too and i was laughing so hard. I must watch more of him. Just start thinking you guys, what they want to make u beleive and who gets all the monetary benefits of it. Its just all ebt power and money😉
In the Name of the Father Son and Holy Ghost: Instead He said: Into The Hole He Goes
Sorry to correct you but Dave Allen is IRISH, not English.
Dave Allen was Irish not British.
Ireland's finest, and sadly no longer with us. Dave Allen had a prime time show on Saturday night UK TV for years... Dave Allen was that rare thing, an Irish Catholic who ridiculed religion. He also often drank whisky during his stage act.....
saw your thumbnail, came in to say Dave Allen was Irish, not british, you have the wrong flag on.
If you like this type of humour look for a UK tv series called Father Ted, its religous and its brilliant.
The joke with Coffin is that he thinks it is into the hole he goes, not the holy ghost.
In almost every western hotel in the world, the book Gideon's Bible was placed next to the bed.
Dave Allen’s family were catholic and he was brought up in the religion, his show used to receive many letters of complaints. But he always ended each episode by saying to the audience, “may your god go with you”
An Italian Pope? This must be really old. 😁
i remember watching him as a kid in black and white in the 60;s, he was brilliant
Irish not British
Dave Allen was Irish .🇮🇪
I know Dave's Irish accent may be hard for you to pick up on sometimes, but I think you would have been better not reading the captions - which a lot of the time were wrong. Better to just try to work out what he said on hearing alone.
Unfortunately that translator is really bad.
But god bless you all for checking out Dave Allen. Adored this man as a kid
You should check out his 'airplane' video, it's hilarious.
Irish. Not British! ☘️
if you can watch more because Dave Allen always finished by saying, "May your God go with you"
Do yourselves a favour & turn off those ridiculous subtitles. they are wrong most of the time.
Dave Allen was Irish. It's not british comedy. Do you even know what you are talking about?
My mum thought him a good looking man every time he was on the TV my mum would say look at him isn't he lovely look at his hair
It went over your heads. In the name of the father the son & in the hole he goes, instead of in the holy ghost
