in my view ,i think the doctine of hell is man's unsurpassed attempt to get compliance through terror. not just fear but terror. it's taken us about 2k years to wake up and escape this conditioning
in my view the last thing dave was doing here was playing with his words .he was using his words and humour as a sword .
in some ways this is super serious and dave's way of fighting back against the stranglehold of the catholic church .i remember listening to Mary Robinson on abc radio in Australia ,when she told us about the vitriole and hatred she was subjected to when she was a lawyer when she advised and represented an irish women with a heap of kids [who didn't want anymore] in some european court .she got death threats which was a huge shock to her .

My favourite of his jokes was about the nun standing outside a pub trying to persuade someone going in that alcohol was wicked. The drinker says “You can’t criticise if you’ve never had it. If you have a drink and still think it’s wicked, I’ll stop.” The nun agrees but refuses to go in and tells him he’ll have to bring it out to her and asks that he puts it in a mug so other people can’t see her drinking alcohol. The man goes inside the pub and says to the barman “A Guinness for me and a gin and tonic please. Oh, and can you put the gin in a mug, please?” The barman sighs. “Oh no. Is that f***ing nun outside cadging drinks again?”

David Allen was Irish and his humour was not allowed by the authorities in Ireland at the time - when the Catholic Church was very influential. He moved to England and had a very successful career on British TV, where his humour wasn't a problem. If you want to see more humour around religion watch the Life of Brian by Monty Python. Its a film so you might have to just do the highlights or do it in parts. You will be surprised to see some of the issues they covered way back in the late 70s.

Being southern Irish you don't know how dangerous this was. There was a war going on in Northern Ireland when this was filmed about amongst other these subjects.I respect him as an Irish but also british commedian. His timing was perfection. Brave man. Dave Allens jokes about religion came at a time when many people questioned religion. to me religion is how you act out to others, not sitting in church demonstrating what a good christian you are.
I had a customer, who was jewish and I visited him on a Saturday. The minute he opened his door realised what a terrible mistake I had made visiting him on his sabbath. I apologised profusely,
he said "dont worry John my church is my home" Pointing to the Synagogue he added "unlike those hypocrites" "Come in you are welcome"

    Dave Allen was brilliant.
When I watch this it reminds me of a Nightwish song, Weak Fantasy - a take on organised religions.

If you're told to fear something then that something doesn't love you, indeed, it's a controlling sadistic entity. But this is what religions do to ensnare people, they use fear to control.

I wasn't brought up in the church or in a religious family and I have immense respect for people who questioned it. I don't know what I would have been convinced of. They taught the stories of Jesus at my school at the school assembly every morning by the headmistress (Principle) but I always assumed that they were fables like Brer Rabbit until I was eight and my friend talked to me as if it was real. I went home to my dad and asked if it was all true and he said "noooo" in a very casual way that I can still hear in my head like it was yesterday. That was 55 years ago and is one of my fondest memories of a very kind and intelligent man who's super power was making friends.

I had to go to Church four times a week as a kid. Because all the stories were old, I presumed people used to believe in God but don't now, much to the amusement of the Vicar.
It's an incredibly cruel thing to do to children, "Big Brother" is watching you at all times, and if you don't conform you'll be tortured forever.
It won't stop though, indoctrinating children into anything is the best way to make things stick, it's very very hard to shake off.
Your Dad sounds fantastic, I'm glad I got the chance to put things right with my own children. Critical thinking, the null hypothesis etc. I never told them superstitious things weren't true, just that there's no good reason to think that they are. They are both adults now and were more 'complete' human beings at 10 than I'll ever be.

My agnostic sister has a new Catholic partner, our first family meal together,he said "thank you Jesus" before he ate,my parents and I are Atheist,we all looked at each other 🤭, never had a cult member for dinner before, so I said " thanks mum".
He doesn't say it anymore, but my sister says he thinks the words.thats fine by me.

@@jimb9063 organized religion came up with blasphemy laws to stop critical thinking.
Even today people are tortured and murdered for religious non compliance, shame on them.

@@freethinker-- Absolutely right. You have to question everything constantly, especially yourself in my view. Punishment for thought crime is not acceptable, to say the least.
Regarding your sisters partner, no problems with people keeping it to themselves at all, that's cool. I remember a clip from Hitch where he said basically if you want to play with your toys, fine, but don't bring them to my house or make others play with them, keep them to yourself.

Coming from an island where this guy lived I understand the religious aspect of this. As an Anglican I was never subjected to this sort of fire and brimstone nonsense even at sunday school. I can be thankful for that as my understanding of the subject was more open minded and was able to disseminate without fear of burning in hell. Dave Allen was a one of a kind and was able make everyone laugh, well not all he was excommunicated!!

I remember watching this when it was broadcast on the TV
Dave Allen was a big favourite of my parents.
First time I ever saw someone with a finger missing, and first time I saw someone on TV drinking alcohol.
The show was a mix of Stand up, as we saw here but also short sketches.
He had a great way of picking out the absolute minimum of a situation right back to the most basic facts allowing the audience to see just how ridiculous we can all be.
