Fascinating to hear how this stunt was created… seen the movie many times but never twigged that the truck sliding into the steelworks was actually a model! Some very skilled creatives working on that sequence… it still looks amazing today.
I prefer this style rather than cgi. I switch off with most cgi films just doesn't look good at all
Lol I knew straight away and in 14 lol
The more I find out about T2’s effects the more gobsmacked I am. Had no idea some shots of the liquid nitrogen truck were done in miniature. Well executed & great editing.
Amazing how much work goes into some scenes
This is why this is the golden era of action films
Great subject. Can't get enough terminator, predator, aliens talk. Ooh la la!!!!!😛🔥
Welp, guess I'm watching T2 tonight. Classic spectacle movie-making. Good job to all involved.
You SHOULD be watching the documentary on how "welp" isn't a word.
there will never be a director like james cameron. he goes above and beyond
These people really deserve respect!!
Wow! Full-size gag had to be replaced with a miniature. Love these segments.
wow never thought it was a fake truck for a second. i guess my mind just bought it. so cool.
thats the whole idea of special effects, if they can fool u into thinking its real, then they have done their job!!
It wasnt fake until the stunt scene when it flips
Being "fussy" about details usually pays off, as it did here so the work is definitely worth it!
Fascinating!! Thanks for posting and sharing this!!!
I love these videos- the best thing on RUclips.
The amount of work that went into making this movie is mindblowing. And they did almost everything with practical effects which makes it so real and effective. I wish movies were made like that today, using CGI only where it’s absolutely necessary.
Using small models gives a gritty realism because the effects are real, unlike CGI which is far too common these days.
Well, you only notice bad CGI or things that would obviously be CGI. These days, CGI is almost indistinguishable from miniature work, depending on the materials involved. About the only thing that's still kinda rough to do believably is organic stuff, but even then, it's mindblowing the level of detail that's still attainable.
A True Hollywod Masterpiece
I am so glad this popped up on my recommendations. I had no idea that truck was a miniature. Very cool!
Videos like these Inspired me to scratch build a 1/6th scale WW2 German Late Tiger 1 tank!!!
It never even occured to me there were any miniatures in T2 - and I've watched it probably at least 30 times!
This is one of the best documentaries I've ever scene. So glad it wound up in my feed. I'll have to find the whole movie to watch!
The whole doc is being uploaded here on my channel. The old DVD I made years ago was more of a teaser for this channel. Enjoy!
Visual effects don't have to be always CGI. I watch T2 many times just to look for the miniatures and they're done pretty well. Will 3D printing be the future of miniatures?
True Lies is the pinnacle of miniature effects, from then on CGI started to take command of so many shots
3D printing is the present of miniatures
Love this channel!
Woah, all this time I thought that tanker was real. This movie took an insane amount of work. Still one of my childhood favorites.
WOW, why havent i seen this before, awesome!!
It was kind of fun working for the Skotaks on miniatures for a week for that picture.
Wonderful! It was so perfectly done!
Love these ! Thank you for all the new uploads 💗💗💗💗
The HK tanks always looked cool and just wanted to see more of them in action.
Yep, he really did work with Jim Cameron - the way he describes his demanding specificity is hilarious b/c it brings back memories of the funny control freaky stuff Jim did at Dream Quest while I was working there on The Abyss.
If you could share a tidbit; what was the best (or worse) moment you had working on The Abyss?
@@RavenChopper the worst is easy. I was told to drive from Simi Valley (Dream Quest location) to Long Beach and then drive a truck filled with $1 million worth of blue screen gear from Long Beach over that narrow bridge all the way back to Dream Quest, and I'd never driven a truck before. Terrifying pressure.
@@corporaterobotslave400 YIKES!
James Cameron is the only Director who was obviously previously a Truck Driver!Great Content on Great Channel as always:)🚛🚛
I always wondered why the tanks were chrome. now i know!
Beautiful, thanks for this.
Outstanding.
Affirmative.
It must be both refreshing and frustrating working with a director who came from visual effects.
HIGHLY recommend Cameron's recent coffee table book Tech Noir, he goes into some terrific detail on his background, methods, and working relationships. A bit pricey but worth it.
you'll notice many people come back again and again.
They did the" Endoskeleton crushing the skull" scene over 20 times, and the guy who made skulls was getting nervous 'cause he was running low, and Cameron _still_ wasn't happy at the end.
For the finished film, they've used the fourth take 🙂
@@feature-creature hey tahnks for commenting this ill check it
At least it wasn't Kubrick lol.
It's jaw-dropping. I've been naive thinking it was a real truck wrecking inside the compound.
Not naive at all. You acted precisely as the film makers wanted you to act. It just shows the time and skill put into it
Jim was 100% right about the sparks, the deep orange glow sells scale so much better than what looks like sparklers
I’ve always wondered about that tanker moment, for years it looked a little unreal, especially when Annie slides off, in the last decade or so at some point it got digitally corrected, but I always knew it was a model, I just didn’t know why, because it clearly starts as a full size stunt, so why switch. Well, now I know, thanks guys, it’s always interesting to learn.
The HD remaster only put Arnolds head on the stuntmen for several shots of the terminator riding a motorcycle (not all of them though there is one they didn't fix for some reason) and also 'fixed' the windshield popping out of the cab when the truck drives off the overpass.
@@kentallard8852 oh there’s a whole bunch of little tweaks nobody talks about, but it happens all the time, each time a new media format comes out ‘they’ slightly correct little bits of this and that in older movies, mainly because these things get so easy to do digitally that you may as well, but it also stops the next evolution in media leaving older movies behind, a bit like remastering old songs for Ultra HD (and the modern taste for sub bass.)
Nothing major, just little things like localised colour correction on optical effects, helping the clarity of rear projection, lining up laser effects better, reducing grain overload, etc. and there’s a moment when Arnie flies off the tanker and it used to be very obviously stop motion animated and added over the action later, but in modern versions it’s been tweaked with just a bit of colour correction and blur so that it blends in so much better now.
@@Lumibear. hey, who's Annie whom been slided off?
@@THE-rk3hx He saw the adult version.
@xtrmst_01 I always thought the exposed eye was motionless because it had been damaged/short-circuited during the little back-and-forth fight with the T1000. It does look out of place though, for sure.
I wouldn't have known they used a scale model for that truck, it looked so realistic
I'd like to hear about the scene where they show Sarah's nightmare with the A-bomb going off in LA. Clearly those buildings and cars exploding were miniatures. Would be nice to see some behind the scenes pictures of that scene.
That scene was done by the Skotak brothers. I may have a segment about that coming up. Robert Skotak mentions it briefly in my "Abyss" segment.
Wow! I didn't know that! Amazing!
Very ingenious how they do these scenes.
You should hear about how fussy Cameron was about the cgi seagulls in Titanic
They were pushing CGI to its limits at that time? How does the rendering compared to today's CGI?
@@Joshua_N-A he insisted they were the wrong size and had them redone
This videos is great. This man is obviously a master, but he seems pained by the experience.
Interesting that at the time Skynet had lasers but they were not built into the terminators from the future. Someone might say "well lasers can't time travel" but all kinds of advanced mechanics and power units were built into the terminators. Not that I thought about this when I saw the movies for the first time.
..it's always a pleasure to see extra footage of behind the scenes.. How long is the actual documentary? Any plans to interview these guys again - for a sequel??!
All the segments together must be around 20 hours or so. I have no plans to re-interview anyone. Some have passed away, unfortunately. This channel is the documentary. No more DVD's. But I am trying to add new interviews and model shop docs of current films. Stay tuned!
@@piercefilm .. thanks for your reply - it is sad to hear that..but then their work remains on celluloid for future generations!!
Didnt even know it was a miniture facinating
I've always wanted to do that kind of work!
and i thought my 1/32th scale Hunter Killer tank was big :o
Had no idea thats the reason why the HKs and terminators were chrome plated.
Great videos bt i have a suggestion.. Insted of the making picture please include the BTS video..along with his interview
Sure. Did you shoot any behind the scenes video? Please send it to me and I will include it... My channel is about the model makers and their stories. I include their photos like a slide show. You seem to prefer the studio DVD making of's that have money to pay for footage. I don't work for the studios.
@@piercefilm @piercefilm productions I got your point about copyright and money for buying footage. But you don't have to making fun on me for this. As a subscriber,It was just a humble suggestion for your video. Thankyou for your reply!!
Woooooooooow
In the original making of documentary that aired on tv to promote the film, I remember the narrator saying that they pulled the tanker with a series of tractors. Maybe some of this footage was used too.
Same scale miniature exploding tanker as in Tomorrow When The War Began. That one blows up under a giant miniature bridge. Maybe one day I will tell the story if RUclips ever stop attacking my channel
Wow this movie fooled the hell outta me
Cool
Раньше действительно делали шикарное кино, а сейчас позор просто и бездари одни. Это настоящие режиссеры!
T2 is a great movie.
Never occurred to me that the chrome plating on the skynet vehicles and terminators was a defensive coating.
I always wondered why the humans where using older weapons on them.
WOW
Fascinating...wonder what happens to these min models if there sold on ?
Sometimes they end up at places like prop store.com or they are trashed.
@@piercefilm had a bad feeling that might be the case ...such a waste ...they trashed all the thunderbird puppets I seen in a Netflix documentary other day ...mental
Wouldn't be the same movie with just white sparks.
These type of practical effects beat the shit out of all the CGI crap coming out nowadays, imo of course. I suppose CGI is easier, cheaper, or something? Watch the original LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy to see the massive difference in quality when using practical effects (mixed with CGI, of course) versus almost entirely CGI. The Hobbit was basically unwatchable; I didn't finish watching any of them. #bringbackpracticaleffects
Always wonder what happens to a model like that tanker, so many weeks of work. Do they usually just get thrown away, presumably the studio owns them? Are they saved somewhere?
Alot of it get's repurposed, but the studios are not so quick to throw away props like they did years ago. Alot of props end up stored away and eventually sold at auction.
With the Titanic models, Cameron still has them.
@@bc1969214 I would too if I was him lol!
I always thought that the skynet machines were not painted because only humans care about the looks and skynet was purely
utilitarian.
i want that cute truck!!!
Too bad they never tried to make a rc semi like that! In that scale my god!
If they sell these toys, they could make a budget for another movie
Fascinating tidbit about how James Cameron wanted to have the tank be so shiny and that there was some rationale behind it regarding it 'being reflective to laser weapons', which in no way comes across for me in the movie. And the fact that it was so shiny always felt that it lost a bit of realism for me; it was not quite a believable shot because of that I thought.
I always thought it was just a subpar moment in an otherwise incredible movie and it's strange to now hear that everything that made the shot not quite work in my opinion was actually deliberate.
The scene worked for me, though I never noticed the entire thing was literally chrome either. I feel like that detail does not come across onscreen very well.
Maybe they should have included a should of a Laser reflecting off the chrome armor, but on the other hand there is something to be said in not "dumbing down" the move and leaving it as a treat for anyone that cared to think about it for a second or two. :)
@@namelessjedi2242 I loved those shots from the future, and also the design of the tank. I was just suprised the thing was so spotless and shiny and now, decades later, I hear that this was intentional and not that they forgot to weather them in a time crunch to complete the movie or something.
I'm curious how long it took to create this movie ?
9 months
Bet that trucks worth alot
Miniature? That's still huge. A smaller scale maybe...
"Jim Cameron was very fussy..." No way??? James Cameron...fussy? Nuh uh!!!😏
