- Day 4 of our epic motorcycle tour of Scotland and the North Coast 500. The day started well leaving Ullapool and heading for the wilds of the West coast. We had intended to reach the Isle of Skye via the Bealach Na Ba pass from Applecross, however, Jamie was forced off the road by a car resulting in a 5 night stay in hospital with broken ribs and internal bleeding. Paul, Keith and I continued riding to get to our hotel on Skye and had the best day's riding any of us have experienced but were unsure if we'd continue the tour. A real shame it was marred by the accident and Jamie missed out. Thankfully Jamie's injuries were painful but not life threatening and he'll make a full recovery.

Hope Jamie recovers soon. Always sad to see a biker down. Know that road well however they can always bite you. Shame about the bike but it can be replaced. Ride safe guys. Never tire of the West coast scenery.
He’s recovered well thanks but still not riding again yet. Lovely part of the world and I’ll definitely be going back.
Love riding the nc500 it hard to discribe to people just how mind blowing it is. great vid hope your mate heels up soon.
It is amazing and GoPro footage does it no justice at all! Thank you for the comments, Jamie’s doing ok and already contemplating what bike to get now his Ducati’s been written off. Great to know you enjoyed the vid. Can’t wait to get back up there and see more of the west coast.
Just came across your channel, really enjoyed watching it (wouldn't have said you were such a new user). We always head up that way for our holidays but planning on doing the nc500 on the bikes next year. Definitely do the zip line at Durness, we did last year and being scared of heights I did act like a little girl in the lead up to it lol.
Hope your mates OK.

Thank you for the sub, glad you’ve enjoyed watching. Gives me inspiration to keep making content when I get comments like this, much appreciated! Jamie’s doing well and already thinking about our next trip…although he hasn’t told his wife yet…
Sorry to see someone coming off their bike.
You have made a great film here.
Just found your channel and I am really enjoying this trip.
Scotland really is one of the best countries in the world
Thank you for the comments, I really appreciate it. Awful riding back to the accident knowing someone was off but not knowing how bad it was. Never had a problem on a tour before but its always in the back of your mind that sooner or later something is going to go wrong. Hopefully that’s the first and last incident! I’ve always loved Scotland even before I started biking, but as a rider it’s unbelievable
Not sure why a few broken ribs would necessitate everyone else going home, mate or no mate.
For me the scariest road is the long haul through the Torridon mountains. It is totally bleak, and even in the height of summer I have ridden for mile after mile without passing another vehicle, or seeing another human.
It was more that if we went to visit him in hospital it would pretty much use up our last day or so and scupper the route we’d planned. If the Torridon road is the one I think it is- I loved the tranquility of it. Beautiful area!
Seems a shame you had to ride so quickly when the views are so amazing, I took three weeks to do the trip and could help myself stopping every few miles to sit and take it all in. Hope your friend made a speedy recovery.
Totally agree, we had 6 days to do about 1300 miles. I’d love to do it again with enough time to take it easy and enjoy more of it. Not sure my wife would be happy with me buggering off for three weeks though…Jamie’s doing well thanks.
I thought the same. Slow down! I live on the route, and I’m always amazed by the speeds at which people “do” the NC500. Even as a local who knows every nook and cranny of the area, I trundle around the roads, savouring my surroundings….and my boxer engine’s torque. Hope Jamie recovered 100%.
He has recovered fine thanks. Speed wasn’t a factor in his accident but I understand your point. Unfortunately we don’t all have the luxury of being able to take 3 weeks off work and families to be able to pootle around like @000Bfb…
Sorry to hear this news, i wish him a speedy recovery. Yesterday whilst out driving my van I approached a roundabout looked to my left ( I live in Spain) to see two riders and a pillion coming to stop at the junction. As they stopped one of the riders dropped their bike! Probably unbalanced. I drove around the roundabout and helped them pick up the pillion who was wedged underneath! She was in shock. I helped them get the bike up and bid farewell! Even at zero kph its a trauma. Stay safe.
Thank you, I’ll pass your wishes on to Jamie! Well done for helping them, I’ve seen a few bike accidents in similar circumstances and not one car/van driver has ever stopped to help. Hopefully we won’t have any repeat problems on future tours!
Ouch. He's in shock. The pain often kicks in later. Hopefully a swift recovery. Was he using a cam when it happened?
I don't think he felt much until he actually got to hospital. No, I was the only one with a camera but I'd passed him about 30 seconds before it happened...
@@NorthernTracksBiking That happens in crashes sometimes. At least in hospital they can look after you and give you the pain meds you need. Hope he gets back on his feet quickly and it does not deter him. ROSPA course good for people if not had other training - that would give him a goal and working to an objective like that often helps you feel grounded again
He’s already choosing his next bike so it can’t have affected him too much!
@@NorthernTracksBiking That's the spirit! =)
Hope Jamie was OK 👍 I never get sick of Scotland rain or shine 😂
Thanks Richard, he’s doing ok now. Will be back on a bike soon. Fantastic place to ride, takes my breath away every time!
Nice video, love riding in Scotland. Glad ya mate is on the mend, always puts a downer on the rest when something like that happens. So glad to see you did what we did when one of our mates binned into a wall up the Llanberis Pass in Wales....kept going and didn't let it ruin the rest of your trip🤣🤣🤣🤣
Joking aside, he is what's important, the bike can get repaired, we take a little longer to get back to normal.
I also see you call the Honda the same as we do...Crossdresser!
Only found this vid as it popped up in my suggestions. Will go watch from the start, never get tired of north of the border. I hope in your next video, the Ba was a lot quieter than we did it ( video on my channel ). Absolutely bonkers with campervans getting stuck on the hairpins, clutches burning out, and a group of about 30-40 bikes all coming up at the same time.
Stay safe
Thanks @tojjer29, weirdly I’m just editing the vid from the Bealach- we had glorious weather and not much traffic. Seems we did have some good luck after all! Sounds like you had a nightmare!
Just been watching a couple of your vids, hope the Versys is going well. A mate of mine has one and loves it
@@NorthernTracksBiking Loving the Versys at the moment, but have to say I do miss the big RT.
I think the Versys has brought out the hooligan element again. Not sure if that's a good thing or not!
Great episode, except for the accident. Now I have to go back and watch the first 4 parts! Where is home for you? Speedy recovery to your mate.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it- hope you like the rest despite the lack of calamity in them! I’m in Leeds, the others are scattered around Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
@@NorthernTracksBiking Lack of calamity is a good thing! The dream is to ride my GSA throughout the UK, do the Stelvio Pass, Norway... you guys have all the good riding over there. Highly unlikely to ever happen but it's great to watch it here - in North Carolina USA.
Great dream ride to have, Norway looks amazing. I haven’t ridden in Europe myself yet…
I crashed a month ago up on the north coast. Back end stepped out on fine sand. luckily no one else involved. Ambulance and hospital staff were amazing. 7 broken ribs and a scapula. I was screaming in pain, so Jamie is pretty hard core. Long recovery for him. Expect the bike to be written off. Airbag jacket saved me big time. Get well soon Jamie.
Thanks Gareth, I’ll pass that on to Jamie! I think the adrenaline masked his pain until the paramedics arrived...he is hard core though- already considering his next bike!
Hope you're on the mend soon Gareth (I've had broken ribs several times, it just takes time).
Out of interest, do you think perhaps the airbag jacket gave you a false sense of security that has made you less risk averse? How many accidents did you have without one over how long, and how many did you have with one, over how long?
@garethmayfield4014 sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident, I too have a air vest the Helite model, I was hoping that if I ever came off it would save my ribs and back, can you tell me did you hit something during the slide or was it just the violent rolling that caused you injury, I hope you are no recovered with no permanent damage to your body, Bob
@@binness hi mate. The vest definitely saved me. 100%. My airbag covered the front area and there was no damage there. All the damage was on the back side through the back protection.
I didn’t hit anything solid, I was high sided onto the bars and tried to ride it out. Didn’t work out and I went over the bars at 70-80mph. Can’t remember the crash. My mate following me informed me. Hugh crash, but airbag saved me. Will not ride without one.
@@garethmayfield4014. Many thanks, Bob
Thats bad show from Ducati I heard a lot of negatives about there customer service after sales support bad show. Glad your mate wasnt to badly injured. ATB.👍🏻
Other than a rack of broken ribs he was ok thanks.
Have I missed an episode because I thought you started from John O Groats and we’re heading in an anti clockwise direction. What caused your maté’s accident?.
You might have missed one- we started in Peebles in Part 1 and got as far as Inverness, in part 2 we stopped in John O’ Groats and reached Kyle of Tongue . We did go anti-clockwise. The crash was caused by a car attempting to overtake a camper van just as Jamie was overtaking the car. Seems the driver didn’t see him and didn’t stop either. Makes you wonder whether you should use the horn before overtaking….
Fantastic views, terrible roads. More potholes than you can shake a stick at.!!!
Maybe I’m just used to the crappy roads around West Yorkshire but I didn’t notice too many potholes. The views were definitely a lot better than West Yorkshire though!
@@NorthernTracksBiking I live on the Highlands NC 500. It feels like I've been on an Olympic downhill slalom course going into town. Not much fun when you're surrounded by people who think that they are Colin M'crea or foreign visitors. 😆 🤣 lol. !!
I completely understand why some visitors get grief from locals up there for their behaviour on and off the roads. I usually wild camp in Scotland and live by the “leave no trace” rule but I’ve seen some disgusting behaviour from some campers (usually in motorhomes/campervans) absolutely abusing the countryside through ignorance/stupidity…
subbed. I suppose an airbag vest would have helped your buddy? hard to wear though in warm weather.
You’re probably right, I’m sure an airbag vest would have helped. They’re an expensive bit of kit here and, like you say, uncomfortable in hot weather. Better than 6 months recovery with bust ribs though…
I was wearing an airbag jacket when I crashed mate. It was sold to me as a full wrap around one. Unfortunately it was just the front and shoulders. It was cut open, so I saw the bag. No damage at all in those areas. I broke 7 ribs on my back wear there was no protection. They do work. I eventually went over the bars at 70-80 mph. It worked. I wasn't speeding. Bike accelerated hard during the accident as I fought to stay on it. Don't know what happened. witness reports told me after??? Get the best one you can afford mate.
Was the accident caused by the fact you seem to speed everywhere and therefore you a putting pressure on your fellow riders to keep and therefore take risks. I do hope that his recovery is fast, I myself have broken ribs and although they only take 6 weeks to heal his pain will be with him for 12 months.
Absolutely not, we're all experienced riders and there are no egos to play up to and no pressure on anyone to ride outside their comfort zones to keep up. We always have regular breaks to allow the slowest riders in any group we're riding in to catch up so they never feel the need to ride faster than their ability. I've broken ribs too and while it takes about 6 weeks to heal when you're twenty years old it'll take a bit longer for a 50 year old with 9 broken ribs...
When my mate binned it on Applecross side of the pass, the Insurance breakdown was there within 2 hours. FYI breakdown on the insurance may only cover a limited distance, so don't expect it to get you all the way home for free. AA\ RAC will NOT recover an accident, they only deal with breakdown. My mate also did his ribs- it's a very common injury.
It was accident recovery service through his insurance rather than breakdown cover so wasn’t any problem with distance etc. The thing that was frustrating was we’d been told to wait with the bike until it was collected…nearly three hours later we found out the recovery wasn’t going to be until the next morning. Good point about AA/RAC not providing recovery from accidents though.
I can imagine that put a damper on the trip. Did the car driver stop.
It did knock us down for a while. No the driver didn't stop...
Very nice, but give me the Pyrenees any day.
I’m sure the Pyrenees are amazing but we only had 6 days…barely enough time to do Scotland…maybe next time! 👍
Hope your mates OK and the Ducati is on the mend. The hotel you stopped at in Ullapool was the only sour note I've had in three NC500 trips when after we got back they tried to bill us for smoking in the room and blood on the sheets, a strongly worded reply informing them that neither of us smoked, and we'd not so much as had a pin prick let alone what looked like a nose bleed, along we an invitation to settle the matter in court closed the issue. Although it's been done with no apology from the hotel, so it'll be avoided on my next return.. (the NC500 is addictive)
Jamie’s doing well thanks, his Ducati has been written off though. Shame you didn’t have a good experience at the hotel-we thought it was great! You’re right, it is addictive and I’ll be going back but will probably spend more time on the West coast rather than follow full NC500 route
@@NorthernTracksBiking just pick some places to visit and amble around between them, you'll spot places to see everywhere. Condolences to the Ducati
Broken rib -s OW OW OW...... nightmare.
You’re not kidding, I’ve broken two at once that was bad enough. Wouldn’t want to imagine the pain from 9
@@NorthernTracksBiking Getting out of bed is the fun part, how many different ways have you tried and still cannot sit up?!
Oh yea, and it's a great time to get a nasty cold and a hacking cough, which is exactly what happened.
I found the experience to be such fun that I not only did it once, I did it three times.
I'm doing the NC500 some time later in the year, I'm taking my electric estate car. 🙂
Nasty, the feeling of dread when you need to sneeze...Enjoy the trip. I've no idea what the charging station availability is up there but every time you see one I'd advise topping up 👍
9 broken ribs and internal bleeding is definitely not a minor injury. Poor guy. I couldn’t hear . But what happened?
No it was worse than we were first informed. Initially they thought only two ribs broken. Long story but car pulled out to overtake a slower vehicle as he was overtaking the car, they just never looked/didn’t see him…
@@NorthernTracksBiking ohhh. I was wondering how it could have been such a bad injury from just slipping. Thanks for the explanation. Hope he can make a full recovery. I cracked just one rib when I fell off my v strom this year . I can’t imagine the discomfort from 9. The internal bleeding bit is always a very serious concern too.
yep, they’re painful alright. I’ve done two ribs in one go and that was painful wouldn’t want to imagine 9…He’s doing well and considering his next bike so it hasn’t put him off too much 👍
£85 quid I’ll wild camp next trip up Caithness
I love wild camping and usually do if I’m touring Scotland but the others are all too soft and think camping’s too much like hard work.
Just wondering why you don't cover your speedo...?....just saying.
Because bike and car speedos aren’t accurate I’m not overly worried about showing my modest speeds. If I was producing videos like Max Wrist etc I’d be more concerned!
@smallam49 if you blurred the speedometer as people do, it automatically tells everyone you are speeding, and by the way it does you no good as you can easily work the speed out mathematically by the road markings, this is what the police do.
I am sorry but just bye ur speed it’s to fast for these roads I live in the highlands and also ride a bike many a time people fly pass me and a few miles up the road there of or a car has hit them please slow down it only take .01 seconds to not go home
Appreciate the comments- speed wasn’t a factor in Jamie’s accident..but I get your point.
@@NorthernTracksBiking don’t mean to be a party popper but please explain how the accident happened then people’s response will be different
@@Swarbrick129 wasn’t able to go into it in the video due to a police investigation into the other driver involved. Didn’t want to jeopardise the case if/when it goes to court.
