the mars volta are trying to now release their material on independent labels (their next album will be independent apart from USA where they have contract restrictions with Universal) I don't think they have ended up in a bad way or would have thought bad of themselves they are playing no compromise music that is clever and doesnt spoon feed anyone. Bands can still be major label and maintain counter-culture values (Rage Against the Machine)

There is more choice today as to what to listen to because bands are advertising on the internet. But the problem with that is the market gets over saturated with bands and that makes people apathetic to liking them or wanting to buy their record as opposed to just stealing it.

I love political music and bands such as Midnight Oil and At The Drive-In, amongst many others. Cedric Bixler Zavala is obviously a smart man, as many have already said, and he is putting his point of view forward, a point of view that some minorities may have or those who are too afraid to speak out.

Everything you just said is exactly how I view Cedric and Omar. Technical skill, innovation and integrity, imo, sums up TMV. And, the various members of the band are into many other artistic avenues. Omar draws and paints. Cedric plays many instruments and quite a few members of the band skateboard.
Honestly, I don't care about music classifications, but I just thought the point you were trying to make is a bit backwards.

No substance? "A beard half eaten, smile crawling with legs"? What the fuck substance is behind that message exactly? Someone with a 1000 buck a week pot habit calling other people in bands stupid. As far as addressing selling out, I'm not sure if he needed to really worry about it, considering his band couldn't even stay together long enough to technically sell out, mainly because of him. Just sounds like a lot of pretentious spew from a highly confused individual to me. I know though, he's a total genius. Don't question it, he's too obviously punk rock to be questioned

I know but sometimes I look around and that is what I see from some people. I watched it again and I agree with what you are saying. The industry need to look at what people say on the web about bands. The underground cannot afford to be ignored too much longer or they might just go broke. I think that the real people who go broke are the listeners who never get to hear really different bands though. But that's just my opinion.

@LmaoLaneyLee true, at least around this time there was the garage rock revival which was picking up some promising speed, but sadly that was dispelled by a new wave of commercialist masturbation. its like we're living in the 80's again, minus some of the cool new wave bands it was nothing but pop. i dont agree that that music should be hated on, but the fact that it is all sold based on image, and it all follows the same shallow croud pleasing formula, makes me desperately want a change to come

While TMV might technically fit into the prog genre, I don't feel right giving them the same title as bands like Porcupine Tree. To me, prog means more than just being slightly different. It's characterized by a high level of technical skill, innovation, and integrity. Prog is made by people who live, breathe, and devote their lives to all kinds of arts, not just music. It's not written by rockers. It's written by artists with a story to tell. I don't feel comfortable comparing TMV to that.
