I couldn’t agree more. My wife and I loved just sitting and watching through another one of the Oscars movies every night. There is something so special about seeing someone’s direct art, nothing barring the way. I get the same feeling watching movies like this as when a friend will show me a simple little melody they wrote on the guitar or something. It’s usually prefaced with “this is stupid and not that good.” And I’m always like NO it’s YOU! I’m always going to be happy to see YOU! I think people are often scared to share things because of critic culture, which is so tied to Hollywood. But I’m always so over the moon to see someone reflect their heart in any kind of art, and I’ve been thankful to discover that in film the past couple years. I think it’s been sorely lacking there.
I also can barely watch the big industry films anymore. I feel like I’m always trying to catch morsels of heart in a sea of studio bullshit and I’m tired of sitting through all that. So I’m really thankful to see more personal art coming to film and taking it back.
Thanks for all you’re doing in this area Joel, it’s such a breath of fresh air to me.

So beautifully and succinctly put. It’s exactly that. Seeing someone, warts and all. It’s like when your friend who plays guitar starts goofing around at a hangout and soon enough everyone is laughing and singing made up songs. Filmmaking needs its jam sessions, it’s spontaneity, it’s “screw it let’s just make something” and The Oscars movies are such a beautiful glimpse into what that looks like. I find myself laughing more at comedies that came from the contest than most comedies from Hollywood. And it’s not despite the limitations, it’s BECAUSE of the them. Knowing these people are scrambling to make something that makes sense and failing wonderfully is pure comedy in and of itself. Every character break, every nonsensical plot beat, every loose end, adds to the experience. It’s so freeing to watch something not caked in polish and perfection, but instead in gleeful imperfection.

@@joeltalksaboutmovies TRULY. The moment you discover... wait... I can just say screw it and do it, is life changing. It's rediscovering childhood all over again; coming back to Natural self expression. Your videos really helped me to get back to doing that again and I'm really thankful for that, brother. 😊

I love how you talk about it being an open and free community for everybody to jump in and enjoy. I think too often people get bogged down in "waiting for the right moment" or "once I have this thing, I can finally start" when in reality the best way to make stuff is to just start doing it. Many avenues of filmmaking gatekeep or have high requirements when I feel the most important part is just being passionate.

the oscar’s night was such a scary challenge to me at first, the longest video i had made was like 10 minutes and that was all planned with some improv. i stressed for a while about how it was going to come together, but the night of i got to see just how creative my friends could be along with me. we ended up making a song together within the final hour that ends the video and i will always cherish the memories, the feature, the song, and the bravery of my friends to go all in with me that night. it was certainly better than watching celebrities slap each other. thanks Joel

Thank you so much for everything that you do. This philosophy on art that you've expressed online for a while now has influenced me (and I'm sure countless others) in more ways than you know. I'm a musician but love films and you are what inspired me to actually make my own short films using whatever resources I had. The sense of embarrassment of "not being a filmmaker" who attempts to make films is gradually being drowned out thanks to voices like yours. The world is not even close to having too much good, real art and people need it more than ever now. Thank you for encouraging so many people to just create

RUclips movies are something I really need to get into watching. It's just that when I see a video with a time stamp that's over an hour, I'll put it in my watch later and forget about it forever. I watched your film "pretend that you love me" and really enjoyed it. But I had clicked on it thinking it was a short and got hooked. I just need to keep in mind that RUclips can be and IS as place for amazing long form content

It’s entirely true, it’s all just a matter of recontextualizing these things in our brains. Nowadays if I want to watch a movie, I know I can check Criterion or HBO Max, but I also know I can check RUclips. It’s all about changing how you think and approach things.

Around 1 year ago I watched your video about how you bought a van and were leaving your hometown. That video was the reason I started making youtube videos. It was so refreshing to see that I didn't have to be flashy for people to care about the art that I create. I sometimes forget that. But watching this brought me back to that feeling of being free to create literally anything. The movie I made for your challenge is still my favorite video I've made. Maybe its time for me to make another movie. Anyways, thanks for inspiring me Joel :)

I remember my first time watching Forget About Everything for Awhile as the time I had to stay up all night to write an essay and treated myself to a film afterwards. As such a character-driven film, it quickly reminded me of my friendship with an old friend of mine who was already on my mind at the time. The next morning I heard that my friend was in the hospital and my mind almost immediately went back to the last scene of the film. It made me happy to think of the first time my friend and I started hanging out all the time and making music just after my graduation from high school. I’m glad you put that film out on RUclips for me to see - I don’t think I would have watched a movie that night if it were to have been posted somewhere else.

I thought just today: Wouldn't it be fun to reenact how Joel Haver watches all 200+ 'movies done instead of watching oscars'? (In one sitting)
In my mind you'd be slowly turning into a robot, with the same facial expression, repeating "but I promised to watch them all, I promised you guys!" As friends drift away to do something else.
Glad you are taking your time.

    • @joeltalksaboutmovies

I am sadly not going to watch them all, it became entirely unfeasible with the amount and my schedule. When I watch them I want to give them my full attention, aka not editing/animating during, which means with my busy schedule I can only watch so many. The awards will reflect this, it’s not so much a competitive thing as much as it is a celebration of creativity highlighting some of the best ones I watched!

Regarding the "safe" studio films, I think it happens in other industries as well, ruining the art; i.e. vinyl siding houses/cookie cutter neighborhoods destroying architecture and carpentry because its cheap and easily reproduced, or "disposable" tech products that are designed to be inferior/replaced within a few years. Art of all flavors is under siege by the salesmen that sell low hanging fruit.

Every time you started a new thought, I thought "that last thought was really good, I should comment my agreement." Hollywood/big budget studios have found the formula to a "good" movie and has really killed the heart of filmmaking. It's really down to a science.. what dialog to use, how to shoot action sequences, what music/sound effects/etc and it's really just boring now. That's why there are so many reboots now. It's easy to bring people in by using nostalgia or familiarity rather than to take a chance on a new idea. You've got a great following now that you've been using to encourage no-budget film making, and it's awesome. Keep up the good work!

Your point(s) about being able to release movies without the approval of a publisher really hit me. You’re so right that the most creative ideas can come from independent artists. And I think the same is true for all forms of media, whether it be film, music, video games, etc.. Creating and releasing art on your own terms is such a powerful thing that has the potential to move the medium forward. Thanks for the great video!

Becoming a member at a movie theater is a great option to avoid the feeling of disappointment in paying for a movie that didn’t live up to your expectations. It changes the relationship of viewing a movie to just a time relationship and not a time and money one. Since I became a member of my local theater (Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA) I have been able to see and enjoy many more movies than I ever would have if I had to individually choose to pay to see each one.

I hear you and respect your opinion. I'm an indie games developer and my community has a lot of that same sentiment; not being able to play AAA games. There's a strong repel when you feel like art is being stifled by the bureaucracy of capital and returns, so much so that it blinds them from the reality that the creatives working on these pieces of art are still passionate about what they are making. That passion shines through in a lot of the product, sometimes refreshingly so when a big budget project can keep a hold of its vision. Yes, I agree, just like games, movies are in a rut where they're afraid to take risks, so the boldness is where there is low risk, but to play an Elden Ring, despite its tired inspiration and design, it was fun and epic, to watch a Pixar film, these are things that need a large budget to be created. Though I am tired of big studios trying to cast large nets to get the most returns, there are titles that still hold value to me that millions would not have experienced if not for the capital put into their creation. The artists that vie for VC need it to realize their vision. Those are still artists and sometimes their art is incredible.
I know this risks coming across as "big studios deserve more respect than small ones" or whatever, but that's not what I'm trying to say. Like I said, I'm an indie games developer and I love the indie community. You can like what you like, and I love that you're getting so many creatives to do what they love. The world is better with more indie art and movies. I'm just saying I hope that the repulsion is not due to something misguided.
Keep up the great work. Love your stuff.

Talking about movies is one of my favourite things to do. But I think there's a big difference between having a casual conversation about art, and what it is that so-called professional critics do, and why I really don't have much if any respect for it. People need to get more onboard with realizing that things are great precisely _because_ they're flawed. There's arguably nothing more beautiful than seeing the merit in imperfection.

have you seen The Man From Earth? do you have things to say about it? I like that it's a weird combination of large themes and small, simplistic storyline. Like, it's just people talking, but what they're talking about is big in a way

I often wonder if studios and "professional" actors are feeling the heat of lower box office returns from streaming platforms, especially during the pandemic when it was the only way to watch new releases. And now that they've been released that way it's kind of hard to go back to this forced protracted theatrical run. I feel like I see a lot more actors than I used to shilling whiskey or cars or insurance or whatever, and I can't help but think they must be seeing a future where they can't make millions of dollars acting in a studio film.

I wish there was better ways to find movies. Jinni was a taste and recommendation engine open to the public that gave movie recommendations using social agorithms as well as various modifier values such as Sad vs Happy, Heavy vs Light, etc.. I feel like this piece of technology is missing now (Jinni is closed) that will really enable great art if (hopefully when) and as this kind of technology is made available to more and more people.

I think some really phenomenal stuff ends up in theaters - I loved Blue Bayou last year - but the really exciting ones so often end up being financial flops. That's really the core of this, you know, for as much freedom as people in the internet age are given over the distribution of their films, if you can't solve the problem of putting food on the table for the people who are working on it, you can only do so much. Ideally we'd live in a system where more films can be financed and considered successes without having immediate mass market appeal, I wish the US invested more in the arts.

People made the avengers too. A lot of people, sure, but their art is still art. It’s art that a ton of people enjoy. I dunno… I think there’s value in both no budget stuff and stuff that takes a village of people to make.

    • @joeltalksaboutmovies
      @joeltalksaboutmovies  2 года назад +2

I think the difference lays in the fact that the vast majority of the people who made the Avengers (and all movies like it) were merely executing someone else’s predetermined vision, and that vision is usually a focus-tested vision of a corporation looking to make a profit above all else. Each and every person is an artist, and afforded the confidence and opportunity to create what they truly want to make, I highly doubt they’d make what we wind up seeing. It’s a paycheck for them, and that’s okay, but it’s fucked up that hundreds, if not thousands of people put in WAYYY more of their life into these films and get paid WAYYYY less than Robert Downey Jr who shows up and films for a fraction of that time. The disparity in pay vs effort is gross to me. If Robert Downey Jr got paid $1,000,000 (still an obscene amount of money to play Iron Man) instead of $50,000,000, and that remaining $49,000,000 was dispersed fairly to all the artists who spend years of their lives bringing it to life maybe I could see your point, but it’s such an obscene hierarchy that I hesitate to be happy about it at all.

Haven't seen Joe List's 4th Of July movie, but have you? What was your basic takeaway? Considering it was done by Louis CK who has made a lot of projects seemingly "out of the system". Also what's your take on Max Landis? I know he's trying to make a Kryptonian Epic movie for RUclips out of the system.

    • @joeltalksaboutmovies

I’d say if you really only desire screenwriting try your best to find that create relationship with someone. But I also believe nowadays more than ever it’s super powerful and liberating to be self reliant, being able to do every part of the process gives you so much creative freedom. Every part of the process is so accessible now, all it takes is time and practice to learn. You might find out you love the whole process!

@@RamenDenominator Anyone can perform. If you really don’t want you, you’re surrounded by friends and family and neighbors who can and would probably have a blast. My first feature was made in my hometown on a VHS camera exactly that way. You do the filming and editing, you got yourself a movie! Limiting yourself to one role in a day and age where those roles are blending and fading altogether will only keep you from making things.

Thanks for the love! Amazing to see all that you and I and others have accomplished in this space since we first met, and it's only growing stronger. We're at the point where at least half, if not most of my favorite movies in a given year are these kinds of unrestricted and wholly independent movies on RUclips. It won't be long before it's the same way for a lot of people. We are bringing actual independence back to independent film, and though our wins and accomplishments aren't covered by mainstream outlets, they are very much real, and felt.
