This is such an important reminder, thanks Joel! It's soo easy to get lost in the weeds with specific details, and nuances when scriptwriting. All of the best scripted comedic moments still come from unscripted thoughts flowing through our minds. Filming and feeling it out on the spot allows you so much more freedom than sticking to a direct script, and unlocks unreplicable truly once in a lifetime moments.

I feel like coming up with a story is the easiest thing. I come up with so many I've never finished making one.

May I suggest a manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto called 'Goodbye Eri'. Its a great one-shot with film making as its theme.

Just wanna say I watched "Taking some time to feel sorry for myself" a few weeks ago and it became one of my favorite movies of yours.
Also, how do you find people to film shorts with? I used to make shorts with my friends when I was younger, but then life got in the way and I guess it's past the point now where they would be comfortable or interested to make shorts again.

While I probably would never make a story or script in the way you propose, its so nice you share your experience and what youve learned. Keep it up Joel.

This was fun ! I do agree we should go more often with our feelings (gut) rather that our thoughts. Sometimes our brain can fool us and make things complicated. Thank you Joel, love you Joel !

Hey Joel, I have no interest in film making but I still love coming in and watching your videos. The advice you give is just beautiful and can be put to so many other things and interests. Its just something about your attitude and personality that draws me in. Thanks for spreading such amazing messages and helping so many people feel comfortable and positive with what they do!

I always have thought that the best stories come out when you look in places you'd never think about.

Sometimes it's hidden in plain sight, too. I know a lot of comedians just start thinking about all the things that make them angry and that leads them to come up with funny ideas and stories about those angering things.

I feel that. When i look for inspiration all i find is sameness, but when i'm like going trough some random situation in life where i don't even have the time to reflect, that's when i get the best ideas. And then i forget them anyway because i don't have the time to stop and write them down.

This series has been so inspiring. I love the idea of improvisation and going with your gut when filming. This series has been my inspiration the last couple weeks and has made the filming process so fun. I think you come from a very sincere place that’s also infectious and I feel like it’s changing the way I think about art. Thanks Joel

Loved this! My personal process usually begins with me scrolling through this long Google doc I have of short prompts (aka crappy ideas I think of at random times) and then writing a script around that. I prefer to be pretty loose with dialogue in terms of what can be improvised but I find it helps me a lot to just get a solid flow of story going. Forgot who said this but I think PTA (maybe Linklater?) writes until he reaches an end instead of writing towards an end and I definitely do the same. I can’t figure out endings first so I totally write in a stream-of-consciousness style and then edit it. Lol I’m sure you can tell that by my disorganized rambly comments hahaha. I hate storyboarding so much but it sometimes feels like a necessary evil… but that might just be art school influence talking IDK. Anyways then I go on to actually making the thing. It’s really impressive how cohesive your fully improvised films are and I definitely want to try that someday.

Just watched the video about taking positivity from the negative comments and loved the message so much. Now I’m here to say I love the content you and your team of friends create. Film is a beautiful medium for storytelling and I can’t help but appreciate someone who appreciates it like I do. Thanks and keep creating.

Joel thank you so much for sharing💛 I always feel really inspired watching you and your work. I'm a fake perfectionist person and that always stopped me from doing things... But at least I allow me to play sometimes and it's always the best. Thank you for reminding us that 💛

I spent 6 years learning how to heal from a lifetime of substance abuse and I want to make a film about it. I think it could give hope to a lot of people.
Can I talk to you about it?

Joel might have an email listed in the channel's About page - but maybe not.
I strongly suggest you have at least an outline for your project first, so that you have smth concrete to discuss.
      Good luck!
