      Oh I still have the love for the layout, absolutely no doubt about that, it’s just me I’m afraid and nothing to do with the layout itself. It’s so strange at the moment when I go up into the layout room and see all what I’ve got and what I have done that I don’t get that urge to do things - although I do go up there and ‘play’ trains quite often. - it’s just the modelling side seems to have vanished for the time being, I’m sure it will sort itself out in the end though. Cheers for now. ………..Graham

    Great that you got a good running high quality version of Locomotion. Very impressive running. The best example i have seen so far.
    A few RUclipsrs had received very jerky and screeching examples, only fit to be sent back to Hornby.
    That had put me off getting one , since being thousands of miles from Hornby makes it difficult and expensive to get a service if i ended up with a bad one.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Месяц назад

      @@johnd8892 Hi John and thanks for the comment. This particular model didn’t run great straight out the box, it wouldn’t even go at first unless I twiddled it on the track and it would start and stop but with persistence I managed to get it going on the rolling road and kept it running. Eventually I could stop it and the restart it without me having to do anything to it. I think the trick is to give it a good amount of time to thoroughly run in, probably because there is much going on mechanical wise and very little pick-up points from the track - hence the reason I am determined to fit a stay alive in it. It runs ok but I’m sure the stay alive will make it run faultlessly - we shall see once I’ve fitted it. I do understand why you are reluctant in getting one but I found that it just takes more time than normal to get it to run-in thoroughly. Hope that helps a,little. Cheers for now. …………Graham

    Hi Graham nice to see you again . First off I know nothing about model railways , but for an electrical background is it possible for train tracks to actually wear out . Considering the light weight of the models that run on such high grade metal materials , yes I appreciate that mechanical things like points may fail over time , but surely replacing the whole track layout would be a monumental task . As for motivation I can see your dilemma , especially when a project starts to reach its final stage . As an indifferent amateur artist , I have come to recognise that particular nemeses . Especially as some of my stuff can existed into as long as a six to eight month period on one piece , which certainly starts to drag on one’s enthusiasm to say the least . You are lucky Graham. I've had problems with poor running and squeaking from my Locomotion and others have had the same issues. Hornby claimed that mine was the first problem they were aware of. Someone else reported an improvement in poor running with the addition of a decoder, so that has arrived today and I will try it before returning it to Hornby.

      @GrahamFoulston  Месяц назад

      @@modelrailwaynoob Hi mate and thanks for the comment. If I were you, I would persist with it before returning it to Hornby, I think (like mine) they need a lot of running in, most have a stuttering start before it’s thoroughly run in, mine took about two hours to be fully run in but before that it was a terrible runner. I never tried it on DC, I just went straight to DCC and once run in then it ran so much better with a nice slow speed crawl to it. Any squeaks to it then it’s probably the vertical con rods slightly touching the footplate but with a tiny dab of oil between the con-rod and footplate rectifies that. Hope that helps a little. Mine arrived from Rails sans decoder which needed to be sent separately despite having wanted it pre-fitted by them. So, after some three hours patiently trying to fit the decoder, Rails recommended and supplied, and analyzing the reason for it not sitting in its allotted place, I concluded the speaker wires plus their large solder blobs plus an item on the decoder’s tiny circuit board fouled each other and thus raised the decoder too high to seat properly. Pondering matters further, I de-soldered the speaker wires and discarded the speaker. As a result with a bit more patient fiddling, the decoder finally seated and I have a DCC model. Yes, Graham, this is not a task for the faint-hearted and, yes, I too will not be running this loco much because I do not believe the tiny linkages, which appear to be plastic-on-plastic, are durable. The Hornby info sheet is disgracefully poor and the engineering design for the tender is poorly conceived to facilitate easy decoder installation. Delightful the loco may appear but, to me, it’s a curate’s egg and I would advise anyone wanting a DCC runner to think very carefully before buying one if the decoder is not pre-fitted as, for example, my Rapido “Lion” is.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Месяц назад +1

      @@atlantaman Hi mate and I agree with everything you say, as I said in the video, if you are DC then no problem, just take it out of the packaging, put it on the track and run it, DCC is a completely different kettle of fish though. The decoder socket is in an awful position and could have been designed better for allowing the decoder to sit flatter - mine is at a slight angle too but it still works. Also, I think Hornby should offer a DCC fitted model of this as that would take all the hardship out of potential DCC customers any heartache! Cheers for now and enjoy the running of your Locomotion 1 and well done too! ……………Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston Thanks, Graham, but it will more of an ornament and curio most of the time. I bought the Rocket when it was released a while back: it refused to run BUT the motor was loudly spinning, obviously not engaging with the drive gears. I returned that to Rails and got a full refund. I also had issues with Hush-Hush being wobbly because of bad assembly and a stop-go Turbomotive due to a poor electrical connection, both of which I resolved. IMHO, Hornby’s QC leaves much to be desired considering their prices and benchmarking them against some of their competitors.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Месяц назад +1

      @ Indeed - quality control is the main thing which lets Hornby down, some of their models may look great but as regards functionality then that’s a different story as has been noted by many other folk. They just don’t seem to be learning that lesson at the moment for some reason, I don’t often buy Hornby products of late for fear of it being broken or just a bad runner, only now and again will I take a chance (like Locomotion 1) from buying from them, and when I do I’m on edge at the opening stage to see if anything has fallen off or if it runs badly - that really shouldn’t be the case! !
