To start my short posting here with your own opening line ... "how did Trudeau got where he is ?" I'm a small business owner here in Canada and I'd prefer to have Trump as a prime minister looking after his country. I don't agree with many of his policies towards us, up here, but I think that he is a patriot to his country... I wouldn't mind a Trump -like leader at all.

A great point of view. I agree with Rex, where the failure of the political class is the biggest contributor to Donald Trumps' election. Yes, many people like him, and his style of politics, but it was a failure of his opponents to do better.
Sometimes elections come down to the least worst candidate, and not the best candidate.

Good morning Rex - You have this incredible knack for getting it right every time!
I am in 100% agreement with this! The political system of USA and CANADA is more like sensationalized REALITY TV drama than reality itself. We're in trouble!
There's just one more piece of the puzzle Rex Murphy - it's CBC and other TV channels are the ones that air the political drama to the masses. We can't have one without the other.
Shine the hottest light on what brought all of this into being! EXACTLY!

I quite disagree with Rex on his assessment of Trump. His political platform - restricting immigration for the national self-interest of American citizens (regardless of their colour), adopting a bare-knuckled transactional approach to geopolitics to avoid letting respectability erode U.S. interests, ensuring economic individualism, et cetera - is premised on common sense and cold hard logic. In politics and statecraft, subjective feelings, emotions and empathy do not and should not matter; decency and unwritten norms of respectability matter less than clinical effectiveness and a ruthless, relentless drive to win. Such an approach maximises material gain, at the cost of superfluous emotive comfort. The latter is transient and easily malleable, the former is essential to improving lives. It's about time that a politician took on this establishment of complacency and mediocrity, and stopped trying to cast themselves as an average human being. They must be better than average people. Trump represents that ideal and has earned the adoration of millions for it.

How about a whole new set of candidates who aren't churned out by the tired and old political machinery now engaged. It's 2020 at this writing (took me several years to get here) and the DNC in my country has made the worst Presidential ticket choice in their history. The DNC had a chance for easily better candidates and a better ticket of real pragmatic moderates, but no. They chose the worst. And they are going against a ticket I'm not that fond of either. But those tickets are the result, not the problem. And instead of revamping the tickets, let's revamp the DNC and RNC instead. Thank you for listening to the rant of one fed up American.

Rex might say what most people are thinking, but he is a journalist. Even worst he is a journalist paid by canadian taxes. This was not an objective view of the man. Shame on you Rex for not following the first rule of journalism (stay objective). Look I agree with most of what he said, but it should not be said by a journalist of the national. This is a really dangerous path our canadian nationnally founded news is taking. For some years now they started to loose their objectivity. Seriously if you are a journalist of the national take a long big look of what your team is doing. Try to change it, so we have news and not opinions!

+John Lawrence no, all I was alluding to, was that people shouldn't think Trump is just a joke. In Europe, the potential of millions of Muslim 'refugees' flooding in, with their 10+ member families, is going to dramatically alter the base culture of those nations. Trump doesn't want the in the US. If we are concerned about an erosion of the stunning progress made by women, gays, and the freedom religion, we should want a pause in Muslim immigration too.

Why is this guy wasting our time talking about Trump, and saying he swamps all the standard candidates.
    He
says, "If real politicians had dealt bravely and maturely with (the big
issues) Trump would be squeaking unnoticed in some corner off stage."
    Well,
Bernie Sanders is ahead of Trump in polls, EXACTLY because He IS
dealing with the Biggest issues, and yet Murphy doesn't mention him at
all. Instead he keeps shining the light on Trump, while ignoring the one
    real Human in the race.
I wonder if Murphy has even heard of Bernie, or just ignores him because he is not a "standard" candidate.
    Murphy is a tool.
