I now know how James gets his iconic tones and why no one can replicate them. He has different tones in different tracks that he records. When layered on top of each other, we get this masterpiece.
@@martingeorgiev999 the best example I can come up with is the title track from ride the lighting. Listen to the guitar only track with ear buds on, and go back and forth between the left ear bud and the right ear bud. One ear bud has more of a bass heavy tone whereas the other has more of a treble heavy tone.
hah lol however when i play it on my guitar it sounds also good withouth different tracks ahahah so the riffs are just badass. Thats why they sound cool ;)
@@martingeorgiev999 they are cool riffs. But if you're chasing james's exact tone, you'd have to record different guitar tracks with different tones and layer them on top of each other. Like sad but true has a total of eight individual rhythm guitar tracks layered on top of each other.
To keep it simple, Bob Rock did multi layer guitar tracks through the same amp with the same tone. The left and right panning is different on every track, to give it the fullest and loudest tone. That’s why no one can replicate. Amp sims do come some what close, but there will never be a 1:1 tone replica of this.

I know as a huge Metallica fan that knows almost every song that I’m supposed to hate Enter Sandman… but I just can’t. It’s so heavy and it’s a classic. Sorry everyone 🤷
It’s almost like it’s a James Hetfield Vs Kirk Hammett song! James intro, Kirk riff, James vocals, Kirk, solo, James middle part, then both combine for the outro
This is before the mastering. I have these tracks and the post-mastered tracks which you can find on RUclips and it has a high end cut and a little boost in the low end compared to these.
Anthony Sclafani the intro was indeed the JC120. As far as the pickups, I believe James was using his 81/60 combo on a black Explorer. Not sure what position they were in, but you are dead on regarding the JC120. As far as the dirty tones, I believe those are coming from a Mesa Mark IV; and I think he was using a preamp as well.
Space Jam Oh yeah definitely. The post EQ work on every instrument and every effect on that entire album is phenomenal. There are very few heavy metal records in history (if any) that are on that same level of overall sound quality. There’s a a part of me that wishes they could/would have replicated those tones and mixing methods for subsequent records. I’m not surprised they didn’t though; given how truly difficult it was to make that record. With modern recording technology though, I’m sure it’s possible to achieve it without all the headaches of late 80s/early 90s technology. Cheers dude! 🤘🏻
"Terrible" is pushing it a bit. "Unremarkable" is a more apt word, becasue that's how they sound without the context of a mix. The Black Album is very much a sum of its parts, and that's where the beauty lies.
The tone is the reason why this riff is so fucking heavy
I believe this song would be way less of a hit if it didn't have this killer tone.
That implies to every Metallica song😂

The entire album is so well produced.
Andrew Levister Justice has the best tone in my opinion. Look up Shortest Straw guitars only
dr moist Justice has the thinnest, most tinny and flat guitar tone I’ve ever heard out of Metallica. But to each their own ears I guess.

Rick Beato talked about it in his “what makes this song great” video on it can’t remember what it was but I know he talked about it
It's a jc-120 with an acoustic guitar underneath it. So, neck pickup on electric, then an acoustic recorded separately by microphone
